Americans will lose

again.

I've just finished watching their game vs. Lithuania. Yes, they've won, handily at that, but:

1. They still don't quite know how to attack the zone.
2. Their on-the-ball defence was very good, thanks largely to Kobe's personal commitment there, but their pick-and-roll defence appears sloppy.
3. They are still primarily perimeter-oriented team that struggles in the half-court set. Yes, Howard was fed often early, but as the game went on, and especially after Lithuania went into a permanent 2-3 zone, Team USA's offence has become as "outside-in" as it gets. Considering they only have one pure shooter on that team in Redd, that won't get the job done against teams like Spain or Argentina, who, might I add, also feature a full complement of skilled bigs playing their natural positions and capable of outrebounding the Americans on any given night.

They will make it out of the group, sure, but I don't think they've yet fully realized just how far the rest of the world has come since the Dream Team annihilated the competition in Barcelona. I was cheering for the Spaniards before the friendlies began and I feel more and more confident with every game Americans play. Let's see what the Russians can do tomorrow.

Im taking all bets on the Spain-USA game ;) Deron can break down zones, and believe me, Jose has no shot vs him. Aslong as Coach K exploits that mismatch, i think USA will beat Spain by 10+

IggyPosterizes 08-03-2008 03:14 AM

please stop drinking the Kool-aid.

Ultimately it is a 2 team race between Spain and the United States. I think the Americans get an advantage by getting to play Spain in the Round Robin part of the tournament. So they can use film from that game and break it down. That could be an advantage for them if they do a good job with that info.

Superjudge 08-03-2008 11:51 AM

It's funny

just like the Celtics.

people will crab after every game about how they can't win.

Listen to yourself Mike... honestly, they beat every team so far by 20+

But hey, they can't break a zone.... what a crock.

Superjudge 08-03-2008 11:54 AM

ps, they just pumped the russians by 20

rapsfan087 08-03-2008 12:22 PM

SJ, Spain is doing the same in their warm-up games, just saying. Russia, Argentina and Lithuania. By 20 all of them (ok, the 1st time against Argentina was by 2, because Spaniards lost intensity at the second half).

Spaniards can do the same, so the advantaje will be for the team whose coach and assistants are better. But it will only be true if the difference of quality between both teams isn't too big IMO.

Howard
Bosh
Melo
Kobe
Kidd. Anyone of these guys can take over a game. If nothing works, just feed the ball to the one person and let them do what they do ALA Kobe/LeBron.

IMO what it's really good for US is that all are on the same page, what it wasn't true at other international competitions. That's what makes them a really serious contender.

Not that I underrating their quality as players, it's just that it isn't a new thing, US bb teams have always been thus (full of great players).

LX 08-03-2008 03:47 PM

The test will be when another team stays close, and puts a little pressure on the US offense. Especially if they aren't getting calls. It's easy to be on the same page when you haven't really been tested. Still they've got good odds - especially if they do get the calls and will not have to rely on shooting.

USA is going to kick butt IMO. Totally different team this year from the one a few years ago that was similar on paper, but way less mature.

Deron and Paul are the best PG's in the world. Plus they are unselfish (a problem with the last USA team).

LeBron, Carmelo and Wade are older and their games have matured. LeBron may play some PF if Dwight goes down, which means he'll handle the ball a bit less. I think it could work in spurts.

Kidd is a savvy old vet who knows how to win games. Kobe is a savvy 29 year old vet who will absolutely not let team USA lose.

Dwight is a beast down low. Bosh is Bosh (solid, although a weak defender).

Tayshaun was a very smart pick for the team. His game fits perfectly. Redd less so, but you need a shooter to match up zones, and he has that reputation. (Frankly, Anthony Parker would be a better fit than Redd for these games IMO)

Ugo Ferst 08-03-2008 05:06 PM

plz plz plz plz dont play Kidd for extended periods in big games and the USA will run all over teams.

Plz dont compare the rosters as "similar in talent", thats a joke, and an insult. Spain has 2 all star calibre NBA players and some young talent. The last men off the bench for USA are Boozer, Redd and Bosh... think about that...

Deron, Prince, Howard, Bryant and to a lesser extent, Kidd, are all lockdown 1v1 defenders, elite defenders, good rebounders. The D will be solid.

The jig is up euro fans, USA knows you have gotten 100x better then when they could just assemble a roster, barely practice together and own. They are taking it VERY VERY seriously this time, and the results will show.

Is it just me, or does Dwade look bigger, stronger and more durable then ever? Scary.

Time to stop the charade and send the Gold where it belongs, i think to truely beat this team if they are playing at their best, you would need a world team vs usa, not a country.

Oh let me add, if i see another "they won by 20+ but didnt look good" post, im going to puke, winning by 20 yet "Struggling" what a joke, oh yea that zone is sure slowing them down, especially the fast break easy baskets and Deron breaking down every PG he plays.

Also most hate him, but Carmelo is the prototype PF for international play, a nightmare matchup for any defender.

USA play Australia tomorrow...will be interesting to see how much australia lose by and how the USA handle the bigger side.
I think the USA would be unbeatable at the Olympics if they had a big centre, they are lacking a little bit of height.

USA by 20+

Also, what they lack for in C height, they make up for in guards that can D up and grab boards 10 fold. Bryant, Kidd, Williams, Bosh, LeBron, Carmelo, Prince are all very long with long reach and good to great defenders/rebounders (well, meh to Melo :P )

they are clearly a better side than every one else, just thought they could benefit from a Tyson Chandler type of player.

Also which countries do you think will be medal contendors?

zhan 08-03-2008 11:42 PM

Ugo Ferst, good message. it is DREAM team. true dream team. unbeatable. quality defense, fantastic rebounding, big shot-percent and strong strong strong... im waiting for fight for silver medals

Spain will get pummeled by 20+ just like any other team USA will face.

the way I see it when it comes to talent and determination,

USA

Spain
Argentina

the rest

IMHO no team has a chance against the USA this year, and for anyone that wishes to cheer for any other team, be prepared for disappointment and embarrassment.

Lebron- "they stole our bike, and now we're coming to get it back"

lol not sure if thats sarcasm or not. I dont think the rest of the world sucks at basketball, i just think USA is by far the most talanted and if they can get their S%# together, i dont see a team that can compete. Time will tell ;)
