Hey Dan. Much respect for that piece. I'm one of those that really doesn't pay attention the details of sports finances and that type of shit, so reading that was great!

Part 2 is posted - and I think it gets a little more interesting each post, so don't give up on me! Had to get the history bit out of the way in the first post.

That was a nice quick n dirty run down of things.

I'm pretty insensitive to the owners' cause for a few reasons.

The owners are the mega-rich. MJ sits at the round table with five empty chairs when all the owners get together for lunch.

Multi millionaire / Billionaires don't buy sport teams to make money which is what gets them into this situation in the first place. Then they use it as an excuse in negotiations; "we're not making money", but making money shouldn't be why you got into it. Investing in the Imperial Parking Company of Canada should be your money maker, not the Maple Leafs.

Owners aren't unified because they bought NBA teams to win NBA championships. They're competing against eachother.

Nonetheless, teams losing a lot money is a situation that needs to be addressed. The US economy is in the dumper, obviously the players need to feel the crunch as well.

I thought the league did a good job of getting the ball rolling in addressing parity this season.

We're seeing new, young referees replacing some of the old stock. More technicals for emotional outbursts. The season was praised by NBA as one of the best in recent memory.

I'm sure changes to the labour contract will promote parity....but isn't the parity that owners are talking about in these negotiations (parity throughout the whole league) similar to a rapping pink unicorn? The best players in the league dominate when they are on their game. Great players have always taken paycuts to play with greater players. Great players will always be attracted to legendary teams that they idolized as children. And from a fans' perspective, basketball is also way more fun to watch when you have 10 great players on the court.

The best way to promote parity and "fix" the situation is create different playing fields. Go to tiered leagues like soccer. Are fans in Minnesota honestly going to care if three years from now they're competing for a division 2 playoff spot? If I was a Timberwolve fan I would love it.
