Arrow Alex English's new project: James Johnson

Quote:
After a very light practice Thursday, Alex English was spending an awful lot of time working on mid-range jump shots with James Johnson and it looks as if Johnson will be Alexís responsibility over the summer.

Seeing what Alex did with Amir Johnson last summer, thatís got to be a good thing, right?

I asked Alex what kind of flaws or quirks they see in Johnsonís form and what they have to work on.

They want him to release the ball more in front of his forehead rather reach back behind his head to start shot (thatís the fatal flaw in Julian Wrightís jumper) because the fewer moving parts, the better.

But the one thing more than anything else, Alex said, was they want to see Johnson snap is wrists more forcefully as he takes a shot and hold his follow-through a split second longer.

This is not something thatís going to happen overnight, and a lot of the success will be determined by Johnsonís work ethic, but itís a start.

I have no question about his work ethic.

Hopefully this will work out!

I really like Johnson so far...if he can improve his offence enough to be a threat he'll be a good piece. In my mind he is Julian Wright 2.0 and makes Wright expendable. He brings more toughness, shot blocking...the same skill at passing and athleticism... and a better handle.

He currently is the only player on the team looking to help on defense.

If he can learn to shoot, he can be a piece.

If Alex English helped Amir Johnson on his jump shot, he better keep on helping him because its not working. Amir Johnson is like Kris Humphries, when he goes up for a jump shot, you expect it to miss. The big improvement of Amir Johnson is his positioning and excellent footwork.

I don't know if that is fair to Amir.

He has actually hit some shots from a longer range than I thought he could. Even his misses are better misses than in the past.

I would groan if Amir even attempted jumpers last year, this year I bite my tongue a bit because he hits some.

He's still a work in progress for sure, but he isn't horrendous!

Every new player coming to Raptors from a proper system is first trying hard on D.
But then they fall to peer pressure and proceed to allow easy uncontested layups

what are you basing this on?

Amir's midrange jumper has improved ten fold to the point where it's a totally reliable scoring option.

More often than not that bad boy goes in.

totally agree. he has a reliable mid range game now, at least on set shots. i cringed at the start of the year, but i'm convinced now. dude really improved his jumper last summer.

Amir's free throw shooting % has also seen a significant increase, Ed Davis's range has increased...English must be doing something right.

i'm actually pretty confident when Amir puts up a jump shot. dude is automatic from 16 feet and in this year.

The only guy in the league that I expect to hit every shot is Ray Allen. When shooting percentage is like a coin flip, you shouldn't expect it to go down every time, unless it looks like Allen's jimmy.

If Amir Johnson had a reliable jump he would averaging more than 10.1 pts per game. Yes he is averaging 3.5 more points than last year, but he has already taken 110 more shots than all of last year and played more than 8.6 minutes per game.

Alex English should just be the head coach already.

It's clear that they rely on him for his fundamentals and player development. He's a good assistant. Why would we want to have him as the head coach?

to his credit, Amir picks and chooses when to use the jumper. He's a player that does the dirty work and doesn't try to do too much. It's not a bad thing that he's not a trigger happy chucker.

that's only like 2 shots a game more. why is that bad? how do minutes have anything to do with it except that he should be more tired and shooting worse because of it. His FG is like top ten isn't it?

It's amazing that the Raps can find a guy willing to fill his role.... look at Hump in NJ now that he's not a chucker like he was here.

Back on topic.. James Johnson. With his ability to create for teammates, dish out assists, handle the ball, play tenacious defense, he is already valuable to this team. If he can sharpen his offense then he will become a very dangerous player...
