Adelman vs. Mitchell
Hey, I read this thread on RealGM, explaining how Rick Adelman would have been the perfect coach for this team.

I wanted to hear everyone's thoughts on the matter.

It came to me that our current team personnel has a lot of similarities to that kings team:

Starting Roster

PG: Kings - Bibby / Raptors - Calderon

Both are point guards that could run high post pick and roll effectively, both are good shooters from long range, both are bad defenders;

SG: Kings - Christie / Raptors - Parker

Both are above average perimeter defenders, although a prime Christie was probably a better defender, but not by a very wide margin. Both can hit open shots from mid to long range, both can cut to the basket effectively when given the chance;

SF: Kings - Stojakovic / Raptors - Kapono

Both are deadeye pure shooters. Both players do generally make good decisions while on the court. A prime Stojakovic was a much more complete offensive player than Kapono, but during Webber's best seasons, Stojakovic was often a spot up shooters most of time like Kapono, if I recall correctly.

PF: Kings - Webber / Raptors - Bosh

Both can play the high post for pick and roll. Both players can hit mid range jumpshot or pass from high post, or either drive directly to the basket with their quickness/explosiveness. Both players can score with face to the basket moves on low post. Webber was a better passer, however. Both are not very good defenders.

Center: Kings - Divac / Raptors - Bargnani

Both can play the high post for pick and roll. Both players can hit mid range jumpshot or pass from high post. Divac was a better passer and post defender, while Bargnani is decent at passing, his post defense still needs improvement, but I do see room for growth on those aspects. Bargnani is quicker and has a longer range, however.

Kings - Bobby Jackson / Raptors - TJ Ford

Both are explosive and quick guards that could penetrate into the post for either scoring opportunities or passing out to shooters. Both are high energy player that could spark a team. Jackson was a better shooter, while Ford is a better passer/organizer.

Now again, I only watched that Kings team in playoff, and that was 7 years ago, so my depiction of the Kings players might not be all that accurate. Yet I do think that some basic similarities are apparent: big men that could shoot and pass at high post, point guard that runs high pick and roll effctively and can shoot from long range, wing players that are deadly from downtown. It seems to me that this would have been a perfect setup for Adelman and his princeton offense, should he choose to coach the Raptors. Moreover, most of Raptors players do have high basketball IQ in general, much like the Kings player, which is almost a requirement for a complicated system like the Princeton offense.

Well, of course Adelman is better, he's probably one of the best coaches out there and has an indentifable and succesful offensive system, while Sam is merely a good motivator.

But you're right, the similarities between us and the old Kings are pretty scary. Maybe we can pick him up in like 4 years??? One thing, this makes me excited about our team, seeing how succesful the Kings were (would've been champs if not for Shaq's Laker dynasty)

the kings suck.

who knows what he could do here, but I can tell you this much, I don't care if Red Aurbach comes back and applies, if your guys are soft, you will lose.

Our raptor team is great when things go thier way, as soon as they don't, they fold like lawn chairs. I love um, but they aren't very badass.

ie. I would buy a Parker JErsey, and I like his game, but I wouldn't want him shooting an important free throw in a playoff game.

the kings suck.
If getting deep in the playoffs every year for like 6 straight years is sucking, I'll take that.

Superjudge 03-01-2008 11:18 PM

ya sure.

I'll just stop now.

you think Toronto is in the top three with a different coach?

I guess Colabgelo is a massive idito then?

I mean really, i read your tirades about Mitchell all the time, has he had a better team than Adelmen?

I'm certain Ricky is a great coach, however, I'm not sure the grass is always so green on the other side of the fence.

Thats just me though.

I was just basing what I said on this:

the kings suck.
You just went in the complete opposite direction.

But if you think Mitchell is close at this point to Adelman you definately have some screws loose. Adelman's X's and O's alone kills anything Mitchell brings to the table, not to mention the defence his teams have played. Yes, Adelman has had some extremely talented teams, but can you honestly say those teams would have gone as far as Adelman helped take them with Smitch at the helm in place and his complete lack of a system on either side of the ball? You'd think we'd have shown some defensive improvement and know where to be at least on some plays during the game, yet its game like 56 and no one seems to have a clue still. It's not all on the players, even though theyre all a bunch of softies besides 1. TJ, and Delfino and Rasho for the most part.

Superjudge 03-01-2008 11:42 PM

ya I guess.

thing is thriller, I think it's just so hard to balence that whole Euro-good guy thing and North American badass thing.

It's a catch 22.

You got guys that are tighter then anything as a team, good guys, guys you'd let date your sister, however they arent tough, arent gonna getafter teams on D.

Then you could have real animals, but they tend to fight, and bicker.

What toronto is, is what they is man, honestly. No amount of X's and O's can cure nice guy syndrome.

Think Mitchell would fail with a real bunch of defensive crazies?

He'd hold teams to 80 a game, but they would also all go crazy in the strip bars.

I think it's unfair to compare coaches, they all play with different hands.

I like RA, I'd have him as a coach for sure.

I just don't know thta thi steam would be any further ahead....but they might man, you might be right.

The "kings suck thing'

Just never thought they were any good.

Like, you a;ways knew they could get to a certain point, but honestly, in your heart, your guyt, did ya ever think they were gonna win it all?

But ya, you're right, they were a strong team, I just never had much for um.

You know what Toronto should do?
Since Mitchell is a awful X's and O's guy, on defense and offense, why don't we just hire a DAMN ASSISTANT who is great with that kind of stuff.

That's what they have in Cleveland. Mike Brown does JACK SHIT on that team. You could say he is strictly a motivator. He's got assistant coachs that run the plays out of timeouts, set up the defense, etc... If you ever watch a Cleveland timeout, Mike Brown isn't the one orchestrating plays to run. It's his assistants.

What exactly do Toronto's assistant coachs do? I still don't even know. What the hell does Alex English do for this team? Jay Triano?

The "kings suck thing'
Considering you've been going after TJ for not being more like Calderon and dishing it to the corners without penetrating and having a system where the ball is passed around like 5+ times a possession to get the defence moving one would think you'd love how SAC ran their offence. There hasnt been an offence near as entertaining as theirs was since then or even before them for a long while. Vlade and Cwebb in the high post and all their back cuts and screen usage for the corner man with Bibby and Peja was sick.

And to the point that we should add an X's and O's guy for Mitchell, thatd be a good idea, but I still dont think hes gonna be our coach when the time comes for this team to really take off and take that next step and become a perennial Eastern conference finalist in the least. I wouldnt disagree with BC throwing 3-5 mil at Thibodeau to steal him away from Boston. Their defence this year has been amazing.

Superjudge 03-02-2008 11:06 AM

sure thing.

Just ask Richie to break out the ole MLSE chequebook.

I'm all for it.

I would be shocked too to see mitchell here after his contract expires. I think Bryan wanted Sam because he has this reputation of being good with young guys + big names will not come to teams in reconstruction. You need a good team before you can acquire a good coach, especially when you're in Canada.

Acie 03-02-2008 01:29 PM

Comparing a veteran team like Kings and the pieces they had with this Raps team is retarded and know what? The Kings only made it to the Conference Finals once and lost in the first round five times and the second round twice. And know what? The Blazers teams he coached with Drexler, Kersey, Buck Williams, Porter, Robinson and Ainge made it to the Finals twice and got their asses handed to them by the Bulls and Pistons
