Cool Adam Silver looking at possibly eliminating Divisions

On @SiriusXMNBA, NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver said competition committee will look at whether divisions have outlived usefulness.
Quote:
Silver, who will take over for David Stern as commissioner on Feb. 1, is surely responding to recent calls to abolish divisions in light of the Atlantic's putridity, most notably this missive from Grantland's Zach Lowe. It's never made much sense to have divisions affect playoff seeding, though, a point articulated by ESPN's Henry Abbott back in March of 2010.

If the season ended today, the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Clippers would both own fourth seeds despite not actually owning the fourth-best records in their respective conferences. Thanks to a rule change a handful of years ago, they would still lack home-court advantage in the first round, but the whole thing seems kind of silly and confusing. With how tight both conferences are between No. 4 and No. 10, there could easily be a situation where a division winner gets a more favorable matchup than it earned.

would make a lot of sense and all the complaints about travel are so silly, even for professional players, I bet they spend more time going to and from the airport and through customs etc then in the actual flight.

not only it would be right that the top 16 make it, but it would also help even out the conferences a bit, since more eastern teams would land in the lottery, gradually catching up with the west. At least in theory.

However, whatever they do, they'd better not change the draft system for 1-2 years

This is a long time coming, and it should be the top 16 teams in the playoffs. If the NBA really wants to put out the best product, where's the downside of this change? You have the best 16 teams in the NBA in the playoffs, plus there's going to be matchups that we hardly ever see in terms of possible East vs West matchups which would be amazing, and we would no longer have to put up with 2-3 East series in the 1st round every season being blowouts. Miami shouldnt have an easy cakewalk the first 2 rounds, whereas OKC has to play long series vs way better compettition because of the conference disparity.

Just as moremilk said, if this is implemented, a lot more East teams would rightfully be in the lottery instead of getting killed in the playoffs, and eventually the conferences would become closer to being even, assuming the front offices in the East dont continue to fuck up their teams, which remains to be seen.

I like four divisions, two conferences, top 3 of each division make the playoffs leaving 4 wild cards which is open to the whole league so you could get some teams crossing over into the east or west depending where the strength lies, every team plays there own division 6 times keeping certain rivals, and then play the rest of the league a equal number of times

so this year it could be 10 western conference teams making the playoffs and 6 eastern teams
