Lowry is a FA, Vasquez and Patterson are RFA. If they get crazy offers I am not so sure we gonna match them. It really depends what type of offers they will fetch.

I really hope we manage to keep Patterson. Vasquez as well, but losing him can be recovered from. Lowry obviously is the lynch pin for the entire team structure.

If we walk away with Lowry at 11M per year (10 would be better, but he's improved his value lately) for 5 years, Vasquez at 6M for 5 years and Patterson at 7M for 5 years, you have to be OK with that. Amir-Jonas-Patman could be a solid frontcourt for years.

17 million is a lot of money to tie up into 1 position.

Vasquez plays a lot of backup SG as well. If you look at it like:

PG: 11M Lowry, 3M Vasquez
SG: 9.5M DD, 3M Vasquez
SF: 3M Ross, 6M Fields
PF: 7M Patman, 3.5M Amir
C: 4M JV, 3.5M Amir

That's 14M PG, 12.5M SG, 9M SF, 10.5M PF, 7.5M C. Total of 53.5M in a 63M cap. Eventually Fields and Ross roughly swap salaries. JV gets a pay raise to 12M or so, meaning 15.5M tied up at C. That means your cap space is used on that rotation entirely. That means 4 more guys with the MLE and minimum/rookie deals. If any real stars are coming in to the equation, someone in the core will probably need to be going out anyway.

Still seems alot, becasue you aren't really splitting salaries over postions. Its a roster spot and a dollar amount.

Lowry 11
GV 6
DD 9.5
Ross 3
Fields 6
Novak 3.5
Amir 7
Pat 7
JV 4
Hayes 6

63 million, still have capholds and rookies, with only 12 on roster. that really caps team out for next few years and team still hase a big questionmark as to if it is real and legit.

Not really. Hayes expires after next year, as does Fields (who would hopefully be re-upped for closer to 3-4 M), while JV and Ross don't get salary upgrades until the year after that. Novak's the sort of guy you can move for nothing if you really want to clear 3M in cap space, and the cap is projected to move up another 3M that summer. We'd still be looking at close to max salary space in summer 2015, certainly at least 10M. The year after we'll be capped out, but if you have young players, at some point in the future you have to pay them, and that's when you WANT to be capped out, so you can use their Bird Rights to full effect and approach tax paying levels of team salary.

For more details. The cap # is still the original projection rather than the update, which is 63.2 M.
What?

I know Patterson is a bit of a fan favourite, and I like him as well and would support him coming back, but I think he's very replaceable and $7MM imo is overpaying. He's a bit of a low IQ player as far as awareness goes on the defensive end of the court. He gets by right now by focusing on keeping his legs moving and staying active, and that's great, but their are consistantly moments where as soon as he stops moving the legs, he becomes a spectator and stops reading the match-ups and the situation.

I wouldn't rush into commiting to 2pat long term just yet. If I was Ujiri I would look at an available veteran presence (5-7y older than Patterson) with a more developed post game.

I think Vasquez at $6MM is a great price.

I only say 7M because bigs are expensive. Mind you, I am higher on Patterson than you seem to be. How about 6M for Patman and 7M for Vasquez? Honestly, I expect Ujiri to do whatever it takes to keep them, and failing that to get assets out of their departure.

I would love to see MU and TL pitch Pau Gasol a starting spot here. Pitch the chemistry, growth, his fit, and euro type city. Do a S&T with the lakers or sign him at the MLE. I know that's less than he would demand on the open market but I feel like he would be open to the right fit.

Gasol starting at the 4 would create so much more ball movement, give JVAL a great sparing partner and mentor, post moves, and IMO it's a step to attracting Durrant.

Can Pau Gasol play the 4 spot anymore...I'm not sure he's an upgrade on Amir at this point. He didn't play alot of minutes this year, sometimes it's hard for the bigs to regain form when the minutes start going downhill.

Well, 2016. We can't spend into the luxury (well, not by much) this summer. Certainly not by adding a big money guy, as we'd need to clear cap space for that. And next year were have even more cap space. The year after, 2016, is when Ross and JV get raises, and that's when you launch into luxury tax territory.

The key is to intelligently use your cap space the next two off-seasons to set yourself up for luxury tax in 2016.
