2010-2011 RF Player Report Cards - Reggie Evans

Next up in our 2010-11 RF Player Report Cards:

Reggie Evans

Started off the season convincing many of the members on this board (myself included) that we had a team that could be more competitive this year. An absolute monster of a rebounder and the kind of guy that infects the whole team with defensive energy. But another long-term injury put him out of commission, and the only silver lining was that Ed Davis got more minutes. I hope we can keep him at a much lower price.

Grade: Incomplete but Ill give him a B+ on the 30 games for completely changing the dynamic of the team.

Reggie could be very valuable as a guy that changes the momentum of a game. He needs to be the guy that can be counted on in short spurts. As good as he played with big minutes, I just don't think he's a guy that gets starter's minutes on a good team. I love what he does for chemistry, and as something of an extension of the coach. I think he would be great to have around to help with Ed Davis' development.

I relate to his candy fetish... and he rebounds well for a guy his size. An army of Reggies could have conquered Stalingrad, but would struggle to run a fluid lay up line.

You know when Reggie Evans is a key part of the rotation and logging heavy minutes, your team is in TROUBLE. The guy had some good moments this past year and he was a beast on the boards, but honestly that's not enough when you can't hit the broad side of a barn. The space defenders gave him when he had the ball on offense tells you everything you need to know. It's funny how he's Bargnani's exact opposite, but when you need two guys to be essentially 1 really good player, you are playing a man down.

How can anyone not like this guy? At times he appears as though he would be willing to sacrifice his life just to secure a loose ball. I'd love to see him back, but at what price and at at what cost to our young emerging PF's? He also seems cursed with a high propensity for injury since coming to Toronto. Actually, I really hope Reggie gets the chance to play for a contender.

he was one of the bright spots in an otherwise dreary season.
we started off the season great! and then he injured his leg and we fell flat on our faces!
imagine that, we were in contention for 2 weeks and then Reggie got hurt and we fell off the map... seriously, Reggie.
our season revolved around Reggie's health! hahahahaha! Reggie!

we stink and made Reggie Evans look like a beast.

Great rebounder, but need to train more at ft. B-

When he played his rebounding was impressive. He's limited in every other aspect of his game, but his attitude and determination is impressive. Too bad that again he had a severe injury that made him miss nearly half the season.

EggsToTheBBQ 07-18-2011 11:36 AM

Great at rebounding, an intense competitor. Good leadership qualities. Fan favorite.

Didn't play much. Terrible at finishing. Bad FT shooter.

Gave him an A.
He's a roleplayer, his only job was to Rebound and he did an amazing job at it.

6cubed 07-18-2011 11:50 AM

Not much of a sample size this season but he was a great rebounder. His offense is atrocious on the other hand and it's really 5-4 for the defense when he's in the game.

js12 07-18-2011 12:00 PM

For the games he played in, he deserves an A. But since he only played in 30 games, he shouldn't get anything higher than a B.

DanH 07-18-2011 12:09 PM

Reggie - pros and cons galore.

Rebounding like Rodman all season. Good veteran leadership. Solid teammate. When he played, the Raps won a heck of a lot more than when he didn't play.

Played in only 30 games - for the second season in a row. Shot a ridiculously low FG% for a player who only ever takes layups. Some of his rebounding numbers frankly came because of who he was playing beside.

Still gets props for the rebounding, but all his other stats leave a great deal to be desired. In the end, he showed the same stuff as last year, all things considered.

B-

rebounding is excellent, but at times he's so inspired to rebound that he's actually bumping his own teammates off the block and the opponent ends up with the ball
his offense is terrible
can't stay injury free for more than like half the season, for 2 seasons in a row, starting to feel like that is the norm

bjjs 07-18-2011 07:25 PM

Reggie was the best player on the team at the start of the season. He's the only Raptor who could consistantly leave his mark on a game and he was the hardest player on our team for the opposition to match up with. His effort was contagious.

In terms of value alone, I would of paid more money to see Reggie play than any other player on the Raps, including Bargnani and Derozan. The rebounding, the defense, the non-stop communication telling Bargnani what to do on pick and rolls.

I would suggest that Reggie's injury actually signalled the end of the season for most Raptor fans.

while simultaneously being the best thing that could have happened to this team in the long run

D.

I like Reggie a lot. One of the most fun games to watch this year was that first game he played after he got healthy and got about 20 rebounds and the crowd was chanting his name.

But I'm tired of one-dimensional Raptors, and they don't get more one-dimensional than Reggie. Reggie's "rebounds are my job" attitude might be a hindrance to the development of players like JJ who want to get rebounds, but don't want to fight for them with Reggie (I remember a couple of instances where Reggie and JJ both came down with the ball and Reggie ripped the ball from JJ and said some sharp words). He's one of the dirtiest players in the NBA, and I'm not sure that's a great example to young players. He only played 30 games this year, and 28 games the year before. Having Reggie is like having 1/3 of the productivity from a good healthy well-rounded player.

There's no such thing as dirty, just savvy. And I would argue he isn't one dimensional. He's flat out one of the best rebounders in the league and he is pretty reliable post and position defender. He wants to fight and he wants to be a professional, which should be at the asset when presenting an example to younger core. His durability is the only issue, but this year he should be getting that 5th rotation at the 4 and 5, ie. he should be getting like 5-10 mins a game.

When healthy Reggie is a top 3 rebounder on any team that gives him 25 mpg
I believe if he was healthy the whole season we would have gotten to the playoffs - then we would have been crushed in the 1st round.

He is the main reason we got a top 5 pick IMO

So thank you Reggie for your heart & hustle & your bad luck with injures!;)

EggsToTheBBQ 07-18-2011 10:00 PM

The Raptors were 11-19 with Reggie in the lineup.

I don't think the Raptors were making the playoffs with or without Reggie.

The team's problems are a little deeper than one prolific rebounder.

The pacers were 8 games under .500 & still made the playoffs...Just sayin.

Indiana won 37 games, Toronto won 22... that's a substantial difference.

To the other point, the Raptors have bigger problems than rebounding. Evans is a great rebounder but am I the only one that thinks he hurts the offense as defenders barely pay attention to him? I still gave him a B but he makes our offensive game worse by being in the game. It's really 5-4 basketball on offense.

We weren't talking about total wins...We were talking about if Reggie were healthy, we could have been playoff bound.

& no one can deny the fact that Halph of our total wins came with Reggie in our line up healthy.

DanH 07-19-2011 08:23 AM

11-19 projects to 30 wins. No playoffs for us.

LKeet6 07-19-2011 08:25 AM

i'm gonna be original here and say.....I just don't know!

i agree with the people who gave him Cs and i agree with the people who gave him Bs and As!!

I will say i really like him and that when he was doing his thing it was great to watch, almost as good a DD's 25-30pt games.

not sure we should be looking forwards with him in the team. maybe as a role player.
