So... Weems at 2 mill per year, or Barbosa or Vet player at 4 or 5 mil per year... Hmmm, I'll take Weems. There are so many other areas that need addressing, and I'd rather that 2 or 3 million in extra cap space be there. And, hey, if there's a solid NBA vet with a defensive presence who won't mind playing for a losing team and with limited minutes, for the vet minimum, go ahead and sign him. Just keep in mind he's an imaginary player.

Consider this: you CANNOT upgrade every position on the team. Cannot. I would gladly downgrade a bit at backup SG so we can upgrade at, say, starting PG or C. You are too hung up on this 'downgrading' thing. Big picture, Jeff.

So to save 2Mil you'll take Weems over a vet that could help in Derozan's development and be better then Weems as a starter if Derozan goes down. I see the big picture just fine, and in that picture Weems isn't there. I remember this argument when it came to Moon. If you're gonna start Bayless, Derozan, JJ, Davis or Bargnani you better have 2-3 vets off the bench.

Weems has proven himself a serviceable starter in the past. Especially at SG. He would be a fine backup, and spot starter.

And this whole "you gotta have vets" argument is ridiculous. Sure, when you want to be a team that can persevere through the playoffs, you need some old heads. But for now, over the next two years of growth, the playing time should go to young players, to see what we can develop. Right now, the team is going to lose 50 games next year again, no matter who backs up the 2 spot, and what vet is going to want to come here for that? And to play only a handful of minutes behind DeRozan? I don't want a player who is only here playing for the money to be mentoring DeRozan.

Oh, and that 2 million could be the difference between landing the FA you want and losing him to another team, so don't scoff at it.

How is Barbosa going to help with DeRozan's development? I don't see it.

Both Sonny and Leandro would need well-defined roles before I could get very enamored of either of them. I think it would be easier to see Sonny filling a smaller role if he could accept it, than seeing Barbosa filling a role that is consistently valuable moving forward. It's a bit of a crazy argument in a way, in that neither guy really looks like they are a part of the future plans, and yet who knows how things could shake out eventually. This is a time-will-tell exercise with a lot of the emphasis to be placed on team needs that become more apparent as the new coach implements his system and style.

If we hire a new GM, he shouldn't be so sure.
