Default 2010-11 RF Player Report Card - Jose Calderon

Next up in our 2010-11 RF Player Report Cards:

Jose Calderon

Quote:

A good leader for a young team, but still injury prone and a defensive liability. He’s shown a commitment to get better defensively, but he’s just not athletic enough to keep up with NBA players. Jose would make a great backup, but at his salary and minutes played, the Raps really need more from the position than Jose can give them.

Grade: C-

Jose is a great player to have for 30 games of any season. The NBA season is just too long for those legs of his, and his game just drops off so dramatically when he's not 100 percent.

Grade: C+

- a complete professional
- willing to accommodate youngins
- some monster assist games
- 4 point play
- better defensively (for a stretch)

It took 6 million dollars to fix Steve Austin. Jose has close to 20 million owed to him over the next two years. Taking inflation into account, I think Jose can afford the whole shebang.

If we're going on value alone, he's pretty fucking awful. But if we're grading him on actual play, then he ain't that bad. Pretty good actually. More often than not he had the offense working really nicely.

A great guy, who showed a willingness to try and muck it up on D this year, but his shot failed him for most of the season and once again his body failed him. He'd look great on the Heat wouldn't he?

Now it's your turn, RF. Let us know what you thought of Jose in 10-11.

well i gave a C and then noticed pretty much everyone had, so i'm in agreement with you guys.

i like playmaker PGs so in that sense at the start of the season i was loving him, his assist numbers were great. As the season wore on he started to really disappoint me, his shot just wasn't there. As others have said there were some huge assist nights that were enjoyable to watch.

i like him and would be happy to keep him, for now. Seems clear he will swap roles with bayless.

Jose doesn't get to the basket anymore. Majority of his baskets come from pick and roll, Jose rolls high and takes the jumper. However, Jose makes his teammates better. Not too many players can average 9 assists per game. However with no defensive stopper, rather a center who acts as a stepping ladder to the rim, and a coach who could never get his team to commit to defense, makes Jose one of the worst point guard defenders in the league. Jose is better suited for back-up duties, not bad considering his makes 9.8 & 10.6 million for the next two years.

Similiar to Andrea, he brings some positive contributions on the offensive end, but he gives up too many points than he actuals contributes to the team, thus the 22 win season.

Jose gets a D.

Hard not to like Jose as a person, seems like a great guy and teammate. But it's hard to like him as a PG. He started the season, looking like he didn't belong on an NBA floor and couldn't hit anything. Once Jack was moved he seemed revived for a time. But what's most frustrating about Jose is that while yes he's a good passer, he's too safe, and ultimately becomes predictable. He certainly doesn't look for his own enough for a good shooter which he is. Add to that his defense which seemed better at times last season but not often enough. And again missed games due to injury. One thing I can't knock Jose for is effort, he tries out there and cares. But at this point he's an average PG at best who probably should be a backup, preferably somewhere else.

X100 to Insider's comment.

I disagree with most of your gradings but not with your analysis; I give more credit to the skills of Jose listed as pros as well as his overall potential/talent and generally, I think he has great intangibles, which accounts for more than most give it credit for. He's the guy keeping our team together and I can almost surely say that the first season the Raps have without him on the roster will be a losing one, at the very least from a chemistry stance.

Jose had a much better season than he gets credit for. The only part of his game that didn't improve was his shooting. If he can regain his shooting touch and stay healthy he's due for a big season in 2011-2012. Remember, he started the season as the second string point guard and trade bait.

Solid B, maybe a B-.

Really liked his improvement defensively, and whenever Bayless took the court, the offense falling apart showed just how much Jose does for the young players on the team. Would've liked him to be a little more aggressive driving to the basket, but for what we needed, he did quite well.

C.

He had some good defensive games against big name point guards like CP3 and Rose. The big assist games were fun to watch.

He's been injured consistently 14 games for the last three years and it is only going to get worse as he ages.

although the assists are nice, you gotta average more than 10 pts. and he's way to safe for a point guard.
i think that window for him being a starter is shut now. he would be a very solid back up but aint cutting it no more as a starter

He's better than most here give him credit for.

Sadly he is hurt more than he is healthy, THAT is a pretty big issue.

Healthy, he's a pretty damn good PG. You could win a Championship with a healthy Jose.

I don't like the way he runs a team, he needs to take more risks and trust other players with the rock more often. He isn't a starter and shouldn't start next season, if he was coming off the bench then he would be great on this team.

i don't appreciate the sarcasm.....
but the last year they won the championship would you have put fisher in the top half in the league in point guards?
i was replying to a statement that said you could win a championship with jose as ur starting pg.
so i brought up a more recent example in fisher who is bottom half pg in the league and the lakers still won.
point being....that really doesn't say much about jose

he's not a good playmaker, he's a game manager.

he's neither tough or athletic enough to matter defensively.

he's too afraid to shoot or even create offensive for himself

but

i'd be very happy with him as our back-up without the stupid point guard controversy that interferes with their roles. Calderon would be an A if he was playing the most suitable role for him.

since he's not, he's a C for me and a C minus for superjudge

yep - he'd be sweet off the bench with fewer minutes. His body would hold up better, and he'd end up surpassing a lot of expectations.
