Raptors 2010-11 RF Player Report Card - James Johnson

Next up in our 2010-11 RF Player Report Cards:

James Johnson

Picked up in late February after getting limited minutes on the Bulls, so his stats are skewed lower than his production in Toronto. Well worth a late first rounder, and I hope he can continue to develop. Not the most consistent player, but gave us really good backup SF that could contribute in several ways. Too bad we didn’t have a #1 option.

I like him best as a guy that can rebound from the SF position and create a little bit. He could be a really nice fit in a good defensive system. He could be an important piece of the puzzle, either as a starter or a bench player, as long as he's not asked to do too much. He could really benefit from defensive upgrades and a clear sense of direction from the team on offense. He showed some ability to lead, and be a bit of a glue guy on both ends, but too often needed to overcompensate for too many deficiencies.

Probably better than anybody we could've nabbed with the Heat's late first rounder. Jack of all trades offensively, physical defender. Even though he's already 24, I think he has some room to improve, considering he's only played about half a season during his two years in the league.

yeah... i don't really know. By the time he came here i pretty much stopped watching the team. I saw him have a couple good games though.

I loved what we saw in his limited time with the Raps. His ability to rebound, defend, block shots, handle the ball and create at the wing was refreshing. If he can develop a little range on his shot and cut down on the careless turnovers, he could be a keeper. It's also nice knowing that the Raps have a guy that at any given moment could go all kung fu and take on the entire opposing team all by himself.

great trade for us...
JJ was a big boost late in the season for the Raps, and really gave the fans something sweet to end a sour season with.
He has the ability to evolve into a fantastic energy guy who can make a big impact on the game... but will need some time to develop - good thing he's young and cheap!

Grade: B

Now it's your turn, RF. Let us know what you thought of James Johnson in 10-11.

Almost gave him an A, but I think he has a lot more to show next year - I'll settle on a B+.

He wasn't all that efficient, but wasn't an offensive empty uniform like Julian Wright, and brought a lot of the same defensive intensity. Great trade moving the late pick for him. If he can show some improvement next year, I think we might have our backup SF spot locked down for a while. Don't think he can make the leap to a true starting SF for a good team, but it depends on what is around him and what he does with his game over next couple years. Anyway, the team was better with him on the floor this year, so he was doing something right.

B-

if he gets a jumper he will be very good. Can still improve the D as well. but, awesome energy and physique, good, combative personality, good team-mate, good taking it to the rack.

most improtant point, as others have said, well worth what we gave up for him. Also agree with what another said, could be a real lynch-pin for a succesfully working defensive system.

Very good defender and i love his aggression at both ends of the floor. Good rebounder as well. Doesn't have much of a jump shot which is extremely inconsistent. If he can start hitting shots consistently and trims down a bit (apparently has already) I can see him having a very solid year next season.

I like how he's a stat stuffer. He gives you the whole package- rebounding, assists, steals, blocks, points. It shows that he's not only looking to get his, but to contribute to a win. He seems like the guy you want for a teammate, and works hard in the gym. Hopefully he's going to turn into something special because he's a likeable guy.

He's a future starter but not a star. I can see 12pts 7rebs 3 asts 1.5 st with starter minutes

it'd be nice to see him develop a modest jumper to keep the defense honest, but that will never be where dude butters his biscuit. i liked him as an active guy on defense, and as a complementary facilitator on offense. news of him losing all this weight is really positive cause it will make him more effective in both aspects. B+

I remember I was very sceptical at draft time. "Ah, another undersized PF"
In Chicago I was sceptical as well, he was made a spot-up shooter (!) in garbage time

But in Raptors uni he has shown he can be full-time SF. Which makes me sad about Julian Wright, would keep him anyway.

I doubt Julian Wright would be offered a contract. He's not really needed and wouldn't get much PT anyways. He plays hard defensively, but not necessarily effectively. Some games he made a difference, but most others he didn't look much better than everyone else.

You remember that game against CHicago his old team. If he had played like that all year it would have been an A from me.
Otherwise I say B

He has really grown on me. I can't believe how mad I was when we made the trade, it was really stupid of me.

I basically assumed he couldn't play just because he was a no-name and never played, I didn't bother to research him/youtube him or whatever.

I really think he's a keeper.

great honesty there mate. full respect to you. I wish everybody on forums (not just talking about this one,) could be as honest and self-aware as that.

yeah, it easy to fall into the trap of thinking "we've given up a 1st round pick for a guy who's done nothing so far." But if you're open minded like you seem to be, then you realise what he's given you and you look at 25-30th picks and realise he's almost certainly better than you could've got.

JJ Has this season & the next to try to make a name for him self IMO

The fact is, he is a great player in spurts, with better conditioning he could be a top 20 SF in this league...

I gave him a C.

only just because he came in and basically didn't have time to do anything. of all players I think JJ is the one most likely to move to an A if his work ethic and motivation to be focused and in shape is as advertised recently.

Good on him, I like him.

I gave him a 'C' ... too early to tell. Played well in spurts and then would diasappear.
He will get a chance to prove if he is as good as he thinks he is ... I hope he is right, but I'm not sure if he will become a good bench player for a good team, or a legit starter.

Not sure why he wasn't in shape?
Is he a gym rat? By now these things should be clear and they are not ... I'm not trying to be negative, but realistic ... he's not a 1st year college 19 year old kid.

Hoping for the best .....
