Ed Davis

Missing the preseason and the first 17 games of the regular season was not a promising start, but Ed took the time he had to show that he belongs in the NBA. While his numbers are not spectacular, they don’t really tell the whole story. He showed flashes of excellent play – 17/11 vs Chicago, 22/13 vs New York come to mind – and became more consistent with the increased minutes. Davis finished the season averaging 13/9 over the final 11 games.

Ed can guard more than his own man without breaking a sweat. He gets in good positions on both ends of the court. You can see that he simply has good instincts, and even as a rookie that had to fight his way into the rotation after missing the early part of the season, he was just able to show that he can play ball without needing to over-think anything. He changed a lot of shots; he made a lot of shots. He provided a nice jumping-off point for next season and beyond.

People fear change, which is why some Raptor fans vehemently opposed our 2010 lottery pick, Ed Davis. "But can he score?!", questioned many. "What do you mean he's not a threat offensively? What! Injury prone as well? Good grief!" Even coming off one of the worst defensive seasons in the history of the NBA, skeptics of picking a potential defensive stud let their collective voice be heard, "there's a reason he fell in the draft". Personally, I loved this pick from the get go. So much so, I refuse to credit Bryan Colangelo for it because it was the obvious choice. Literally, a no brainer. Even David Kahn would have got this one right. Kahn would have converted Davis into a PG, but I digress.

- blocks, changes shot
- physical man to man defender
- almost infallible finishing around the bucket
- jumper improving

Ladies and gentlemen, it took us five years or so to find an exciting young replacement for Vincent Lamar Carter. We found a replacement for Christopher Wesson Bosh before he even left.

He's fundamentally sound, can D up,has good inside game and looks tough. What's not to like about him? Too bad he already wants out of Toronto. just kidding.

whats new? a fantastic young player who will potentially be the best Raptor player in a few years, but will probably leave at the end of his contract.
hooray for us!!!

i predict a HUGE season next year, and an even better season the year after.... and so on.... until he dumps us and become the next hated ex-raps player.

Now it's your turn, RF. Let us know what you thought of Ed Davis in 10-11.

Great rookie season! Defends well, is efficient offensively, and stays within his own game out there. Solid A.

Depending on how you value advanced stats...

He was third in WP on the team. 2nd in WS/48. Had the 5th lowest DRTG. Had the 3rd highest ORTG. Had the 2nd lowest TO% on the team (!). Had the 3rd highest block %. Had the 3rd highest TRB% (behind only Reggie and Dorsey). Had the highest eFG% this side of Peja's 2 games. Ranked 2nd behind Amir in TS% (not counting Peja... Darn you Peja!!!!). Posted a PER of 15.8, good for 4th on the team.

All with the third lowest USG% on the team, in 24.6 minutes per game, in his rookie year.

I'd give him a solid B. He had a good rookie campaign, which didn't start out right with the injury. He showed potential on defence and the boards. I liked how he was consistent throughout the season. There wasn't a game where Davis played terrible to the point he ahd to be benched.

Tempted to give him an A. I love this kids atittude. Good defensive player, alters shots, blocks shots, and rebounds. He led this team in double doubles and missed a month, that while in his rookie season and being undersized. He's poised for his age and plays within himself. If he can add a bit of weight and address his midrange shooting/FT's he'll be a future all-star imo. Him and Derozan are 1a and 1b for my favourite player right now.

B+

I gave him B. B is a good score, I like Ed Davis.

:)

(I'd only give an A to a guy that entirely ripped it up)

Akerlyn 07-07-2011 11:14 AM

RaptorsandBuckeye FaN 07-07-2011 11:33 AM

A.

13th pick, rookie, coming back from injuries, and all he did was play very well. Not much more you could ask for at this stage of his career.

Also props to whoever is making the photos. Nicely done.

this kid is the only player on the raptors that really gets it. he plays smart, efficient and effective on both sides of the ball. it's been awhile since i was truly excited by a raptor, and he does it for me. i'm really looking forward to seeing his role and minutes expanding whenever the next season is. this kid reminds me of pj brown so much and he was one of my favourite players.

Why do so many of you think he wants to leave Toronto. :dead: On draft his dad was disappointed that he was headed to Toronto but at the end of the season he said that Toronto is a perfect fit for Davis. I also don't remember Davis ever mentioning that he disliked Toronto either. :confused2:

i think it was the lack of enthusiasm on his face when his name was called that had people saying such things. i say, build a winner and he'll want to be here.

Didn't come across I guess, except fancylad. Still why the reason for the sarcasm unless others actually believe he wants to leave.

the comment or the grade?

Gurk 07-07-2011 05:12 PM

So far so good. He showed a lot of promise. I'd give him a A because he really exceeded my expectations which were low esp. since he was injured to start the season

Don Vito 07-07-2011 05:46 PM

A+ IMO

Hes a rookie, got injured and missed training camp, missed alot of games, came off the bench behind vets like Amir/Reggie and still managed to put up impressive stats while leading the team in double doubles.

Nyall2009 07-07-2011 05:59 PM

How the hell is anyone rating this guy's season an A or worse an A+? Ed is closer to a C than an A, especially when compared to other rookies who played the same position...

You guys are easily impressed no doubt.. Not even Ed would say that was an A...
