Raptors 2010-11 RF Player Report Card - Andrea Bargnani

Next up in our 2010-11 RF Player Report Cards:

Andrea Bargnani

The enigma continues to frustrate raptorsnation. At times a dominant offensive talent, he spends most of the time checked out and completely unfocused. No help defense, poor rotations, lackluster rebounding, slow to react - he has shown little of the drive that endears Toronto sports fans. Has Andrea answered the question of whether he’ll ever be able to improve in these areas with a resounding 'no', or is he still just a 25 year old that is taking longer to develop the mental part of his game? I can’t help but wonder if there are a few gm’s out there that might want to take that gamble.

Grade: D+

Andrea had a handful of really nice games this season. Like maybe three. Other than that he usually had stretches of taking too many bad shots and being a spectator on the defensive end. He's not getting better, and he shows no interest in being held to account or holding himself to account when he points to his inconsistent offensive prowess as an achievement, and downplays defensive issues as something that the team and the coaching need to solve as much as he does individually. If he could find a role that didn't kill the culture that a young team is trying to develop, then he could be worth something here for a while longer. But it's not hard to see where this team will need to convert inconsistent offense for some defense at some point.

Over this year my general feelings about Andrea have shifted from lust, an erotic admiration of his towering grace, to indifference - fitting, I know. Nevertheless, there were some genuinely special moments for Il Mago this season, such as: putting up 40 in the garden, a strong effort while beating the Celts, and 26 and 12 versus the Thunder in a home win. Unfortunately, that was one of his two (I think) double doubles on the season. Two. Yep, two. Now, that blaze of hope that a #1 pick sparks has died into a cool ember. Cool like Primo pasta resting in Andrea's tummy. Because we all know, there is no fire in it. Uh huh, two.

Oh boy. How do you say "Other than some nice offensive games he pretty much sucked in all aspects of the game of basketball" in Italian?

I am a Bargnani fan. I like him. I want him to succeed. I want him to be a good 'franchise player'. But he proved he can't do it. Or he doesn't want to do it. Who knows what the hell to do with him anymore.

Always wanted him to succeed and this was supposed to be the year he finally broke through. Unfortunately, he just broke.

if before the season began someone told me Bargs would average 21/5, i'd be somewhat pleased.
but then I sit through the entire season and watch this big dumbass hang out at the 3 point line, shy away from contact, be a doormat on Defense - all the while running around with his mouth open looking clueless!

he may just be the most frustrating player in the league.

Its funny, i actually was rooting for him at the beginning of the year, and backed him in arguements.... i wanted so badly for him to do well, only to see him fail.... i have no more excuses for him, and he has no more excuses for his god-awful D.
the experiment is over for this guy... he will never be a successful Raptor.

Now it's your turn, RF. Let us know what you thought of Andrea in 10-11.

Why does that picture creep me out a bit?

Anyway, i'll keep this short. He regressed at everything not connected to Offense. And imo even his offense was overrated. And his shooting was average. Scoring 21pts on 18 shots isn't much to brag about. Especially since his scoring is somewhat negated by his lack of effort and effectiveness on Defense.

D is for defense, and since he admittedly doesn't care about it.....it's also my grade for him.

I think you guys summed it up well above. Some excellent offensive games, but in the end showed no evidence that you want the guy in a championship starting 5 ..
Didn't see the passion .. it could be just his way, but his defense was superior the year before and overall regressed last year in this facet of his game.

On an otherwise brutally defensive team, Bargnani managed to be as poor defensively as most of his peers. He did however, show a new level offensively that gives hope to even more in the future. At times, he carried the team through frustrating stretches with his scoring but could also still improve with his shot selection, including less deep, lazy 2 pointers. With the right coaching, and with teammates willing to at least alleviate opponent penetration into the lane, Bargnani's length can serve to create problems for opposing offenses. He needs to accept more responsibility on the boards and with rotations, but overall a season that showed even more glimpses that he can be a strong contributer even though he doesn't jump around screaming everytime he scores, makes a block or does something ordinary in the game of basketball. If the critics are willing to give the guy a break, they'd at least see that he isn't the devil and can be a great teammate for these young raps. It's not reboundball, though he does need to up that effort too.

Here's the thing about Bargs. He is far and away the most talented player on the team. Hands down.

But for whatever reason, he doesn't want to work at either end. Defensively, this is obvious. He holds his own one on one, but is often out hustled for rebounds and fairly often just forgets to rotate. He certainly wasn't the only problem with the Raps' D, but he was one of the biggest ones. I think he gets a bit too much flack in this regard, but that's only because of the epic level of flack he gets.

Offensively, for me, he is even worse. Because he could be SO GOOD. Every game you can see the talent shine through on a play or two. But he just doesn't stick to his strengths. He is actually a good 3 point shooter - but most of the time he pump fakes, and then either travels or pulls up for a very long two. If he constrained his game to open three point shots (spreading the floor), drives or cuts off of good coverage on those 3 point attempt plays, and posting up smaller players guarding him because of that perimeter game, he would do well. But instead he so often hesitates, or tries to do too much, or doesn't want to do anything at all, so just passes it back out.

I will leap for joy if he puts it together next year, I've been a supporter of his since day 1, since his talent is just so obvious, but if he can't start having an impact elsewhere, he has to improve his efficiency on offense at the very least.

A D+ for this year. Hoping for a nice A next year, whenever it happens. If things ever click for this kid, we'll have something real good on our hands. If not, well, c'est la vie of a Raptors fan.

C-.

He's playing out of position, the other teams seem to target him more defensively now that Bosh is gone, and he still wound up having a career best 21 PPG and was the Raps leading scorer.

That being said, he seems to have no pride in how he plays defense, and the Raps have less offensive flow when he's on the court. I'd like to see how he works out as a PF, but I predict he's going to be benched a lot for not giving any effort on defense and that he is going to sulk. Hopefully he can be traded for someone with some heart.

To be fair the team wasn't that bad when Evans was a starter and grabbing all the rebounds. I think many people want to see him paired up with a true center because he has never been paired with a true center in his entire NBA career. Him as the #1 option playing center didn't turn out well. He can be a good piece on this team but other guys like DeRozan need more touches as well.

I have a feeling that if there is a season this year, he has until the trade deadline to show how commited he is to the defensive mentality of his game or BC will trade his ass for sure, the chick can stay though!!!!!

Still carried the work load on offense fairly effectively, so I'll give him a B- as well.

Inefficient on offense. Lost on defense (still).

Was hoping for a lot more from Bargnani this past season coming into the game. Didn't happen so with that said a D.

The entire team's poor defense is not solely on Bargs but everyone, players and coaches a like. I'm a fan of Bargs and his skillset and am frustrated by his play as anyone. I expect better this year; new coach, defensive schemes, expectations/accountability - this truly is Bargs' last chance to put it together or he'll have to sneak out of town in the middle of the night. For this year, C.

i gave him a C, but its more of a C- and maybe even a D+

but he basically brings offense only, zero defense, zero rebounding, and a lot of that screams of zero hustling
worst is his offense is based on jumpshooting so if his shot is off he is useless, he's a good shooter but a lot of it is height, and now he's showing that passing is not even an option

i hope it's just a poor choice or wording, but i think i've seen you argue you this before. i'm just curious when all this winning happened when Bargs was on the floor. we won 22 games and Bargs played in 66 of them.

also, i don't know what the point of even mentioning that we had a higher winning percentage when Bargs was playing. you do realize that when he's injured, we're not exactly replacing him with anyone who can pick-up his offensive production or even match the spacing that he can create on the offensive side of the ball. all that we're do is just extending the minutes of players like joey dorsey.
