2010-11 Raptors salary structure (Amir incl.)

This was put together by a poster @ RealGM. According to Hoopshype we had 46Mil committed before Amir was re-signed. So i believe it's closer to 52Mil and his numbers are a little off. What options do we have now. This deal kind screws us imo. Unless BC knows what he's getting for Bosh and has other things lined up (ie: Calderon, Turkoglu, MLE). BTW, how the hell is BC interested in Amare in anyway with seemingly no money left, at least not Amare type money. I really hope the numbers reported are off by about 5Mil.

So with the Amir signing (starting salary ~ 5.8 M) we are now at around 55.5 - 56 Million

So we probably have 10-11 Million to spend this off season (at most) to be spent by:

1. Taking Players back in Bosh S&T
2. Converting any TPE generated in a sign & trade
3. Using MLE (portion or full)

This eliminates the ability to get back full player value in a sign and trade for Bosh.

******************
One thing that hasn't been talked about much in the free agent frenzy is what budget Colangelo is working with for the upcoming year.

It is a safe bet that without Bosh/Contending team MLSE will not approve going into luxury tax.

We are at approx 50 M right now (including Davis). Luxury tax will be approx 68 M

Hopefully (not a given) Colangelo is allowed to spend up until luxury tax limit.

So he has probably 15-18 M to spend (assuming he may wnat to leave a couple of million buffer)

Colangelo has to decide how best to spend that 15-18 M. His options are:

1. Resigning Amir
2. Taking Players back in Bosh S&T
3. Converting any TPE generated in a sign & trade
4. Using MLE (portion or full)

Given the above, you can see the reluctance to take back any significant salary in a S&T unless it is someone of real value (i.e. Noah) as the other options (TPE, MLE) might get someone more useful.

We really don't have much salary space to work with. For example if we take on Deng we are pretty much done (only have enough to re-sign Amir)

I would think if we had a chance to get Amare we'd be going over the luxury tax to do so with the TPE. I mean if Bosh signs a max with a TPE, then we can use it to get Amare.

or If by some Miracle, we send away Jose or Hedo, we could take back more salary and go above the luxury tax then.

Basically, something smells. MLSE will never go above the luxury tax level, but why does it seem like we're going there?

He's talking to Amar'e because he hopes to get a big Traded Player Exception from whatever deal happens with Bosh. He could possibly move an expiring contract like Reggie Evans in such a deal, which would likely give him enough space under the luxury tax line to take on Amare's salary.

Trade expirings for Marvin Williams. Then trade Bosh/Hedo for picks/TPE. Amare then gets TPE.

Jose/Jack
DD/Weems/Beli
Williams/Weems
Amare/Amir/Davis
Bargs/Amir/Dorsey

What team would take on Hedo's salary just because?

Dudes, in an ideal scenario, BC would work a three way deal to get Amar'e. That's the best, and probably the only, way to convince Amar'e to come to Toronto.

Bosh to team X

Amar'e to Toronto

Something from team X to Phoenix

The TPE from a Bosh trade will probably NOT be substantial enough to bring in Amar'e, because Amar'e wants a FULL MAX deal and is eligible to earn more in the first year of his max than Bosh. Amar'e made more than Bosh last year, so his raise means a first year salary of $17.2 million.

So, if Bosh is traded out for a full TPE ($16.6) million, BC still won't have enough to cover Stoudemire's $17.2 million. There is a gap between Bosh's salary and Stoudemire's. You can't combine a TPE with expirings and you can't combine it with outher exceptions. To use the TPE to get Amar'e, BC would have to get Amar'e to agree to take less money during the first year. I doubt Amar'e does that.

The biggest advantage of a 3 team deal is that Amar'e gets his 6th year. It is dangerous for the Raps, but great for him. Giving Amar'e that 6th year worth $20+ mill is probably the only way to lure him away from the other teams, if it's possible at all.

It's more likely

MLSE was ready to go over the lux tax to keep Bosh.
And its safe, if you let Evans and Banks expire we drop under tax after one year
