Default 15 Years later and I still can't shake them

I'm talking about being a Raptor fan. As soon as John Bitove announced Toronto is getting NBA basketball I was a fan. So in reality its been longer couple that with the hope of a basketball franchise eventually coming before that.

In 15 years we had a Crappy Skydome venue couple with a better ACC Venue, bad team after bad team sprinkle with some good moments and now into the BC years.

3 message boards later, almost every live tv game watched (well blowouts and the really 'dark years' were hard) and been to quite a few regular season games with playoffs being a former ticket holder.

I'm sure many that been on the Raptor bus as long as I have. I don't know many here as I'm more of a newer member but I promise you I've been around since the begining.

I just wanted to start out the thread to have some Raptor Fan talk. How do you feel to be a Raptor fan and what keeps you going.

For myself its just the pride of basketball being my favourite sport of choice and sticking with a pro team since the beginning helped. Especially it being one from my home town.

This may sound silly but some bad Raptor years were more enjoyable than the good ones. For example I loved the Mike James year. Oh god lets just see what James will do next. That average guard turned superstar LOL.

This.

Something about being a fan of the only basketball team in Canada keeps the pride on high. For me at least.

I was watching Monday Night Football yesterday, and the NFL franchises of Atlanta and New Orleans changed when they acquired their franchise player or quaterback with Drew Brees and Matt Ryan. When you look at the NBA, the course of the several franchise changed dramatically when they drafted their franchise player:

Spurs drafting Duncan, Cleveland drafting Lebron James, Lakers drafting Kobe Bryant.

I think the Raptors had one or two chances of drafting that franchise player that would lead the team to be a true contender. They had a chance of drafting Brandon Roy several years ago. One could also look at drafting Wade instead of Bosh. Bosh is a great player, but I don't think he can lead a team to a NBA championship. Similiar that Dallas can't win with Dirk as its best player. There a few exceptions like Detroit and Boston, but championships start at the NBA Draft. Fifteen years later, there was one period where we made the right draft choices (McGrady & Carter), but we couldn't keep this killer tandem together.

I hate how people that live here choose to cheer for other teams. I know it's there choice but still. I hate fanboys the most(not including Kirby/jump/kirharold). Toronto no matter how crap they get will always be my favourite team. I hope that doesn't happen though

Its better to have a team than not having one at all

I agree to that but it would be nice to make the 2nd round every 15 years or so

Work is rough, money gets tight. I get bored, and have an internet addiction.

Otherwise I wouldn't bother with you Jackals.

You cheer for the home team. It's as simple as that.

Doesn't matter if they are good or bad.

I guess i kind of grew up with the team (i was 16 when they came into the NBA).

Frankly i feel proud to support the Raptors regardless of how they do... Basketball isn't even my favorite sport, but i'd say the Raptors are the team i have the strongest bond with... maybe it's because i too have followed them since day 1. probably.

One big reason why i love the team so much is because of this forum actually. Just talking about basketball, the team, and other random stuff - it's good fun and a pretty enjoyable part of my days.

and yeah DVS, that Mike James year had its moments. Bahamas!

You had me until the last paragraph. The MJ Year was sad and pathetic. The weary end of another promising season.

I was at the first preseason game at the Skydome. I went to the World Championships in 94 to get first crack at season tickets. I didnt get them, but seeing real NBA players in the flesh was exciting enough...and I was 30 at the time.

My NBA fandom started on Sundays with the NBA on NBC in the 80's. Mainly Lakers and Celtics games, but I watched whatever I could.

I grew up around the Leafs that knew that they could "put Micky Mouse in net and they would still fill the arena" * Harold Ballard. I'm not going to play anyones fool. As long as the Raptors are trying to get better, I will remain a fan.

This year might test all of our loyalty. They will have some brutal stretches and some exciting runs. This season is as big a crapshoot as ever. Hang on to the bandwagon!!

Me with Brendon Malone. Raptors first Coach. October 1995

Yes the Mike James year was the best Losing year in Raptors history aside from the First I suppose.

And for Raptorman I agree this year will be nothing but a soap opera and will test alot of Raptor fans Loyalty or just frustrate it.

Nov. 3, 1995 - a chilly and damp Friday evening.

I remember it like it was yesterday.
