The 10 most toxic NBA contracts

Quote:

If this year's free agent season taught us one thing it is this. NBA salaries are about to go through a period of deflation, especially amongst the non-elite. With that in mind, I scoured the Hoopshype salary data to find 10 contracts I would least want to be holding at the moment.

Now, when I describe a contract as "toxic" I am not necessarily saying the player under contract is a poor player, I am merely saying the amount he is due is way out of whack with the wins I would expect him to produce over the term of the contract.

For instance, Washington PG Gilbert Arenas and Orlando PF Rashard Lewis -- the promisees on my two most toxic contracts -- are both fine, above-average players. But they are not elite level players. Yet each is due to be paid super-elite level money for many years to come. And with NBA salaries in deflation, those contracts, I predict, will become more and more onerous by the season.

On the other end of the spectrum are Golden State SF Stephen Jackson and Toronto PF/C Andrea Bargnani. Neither is paid all that much by new millenium standards, yet each is paid way, way more than the wins he will produce. Both are extremely sub-par performers and therefore any premium paid to either is money wasted.

With that primer, here is the list:

3. Andrea Bargnani... 56.5 million through 2015
Comment: This contract doesn't look horrible monetarily, but when you consider that the promisee is a serious loss producer, and a perennial member of my "20 Most Harmful" lists, any premium -- no -- any long term deal involving this player is a bad, toxic deal.

not fair to bargnani, hedo has no upside and has a far worse contract

bargnani was signed in hopes of him playing like he did for the last 35 and hopefully better. if you consider his young age and the 20/10 with ease potential, then he's far from a toxic contract. Bigs in this leaue come at a premium specially when they have a guard skillset. That 5 rebound per game BS isn't gonna cut it no more though, he certainly has to continue progress.

who knows, he might be a serious bargain one day if bosh starts getting in his face again and acting like a leader

Whats fair contract for Hedo? if its too far, 6 mil? 5 mil? (no offence, real Q)

and with just two years facilitator experience, he took MIP award a year ago and gained valuable playoff-final experience last year... how come you can say he reached his top and cant add nothing more than this? if you say a half season -arguable- impressive performance from Barg is making his contract far better than Hedo's and if you reach this claim with lack of high quality bigs in the league, tell me than how many SF out there with that skill set.

Honestly i don't see either as a bad contract, especially Andrea's. Hedo's contract @ 10Mil/yr is about what he should be getting for what he brings to a team especially when you look around at other players that are getting 10+Mil/yr, the term is debatable but seriously, if in his 4th year we want to trade him (say at the trade deadline?) i doubt it would be a problem. And anyone who thinks it would be has a short memory.

personally i dont think hedo is worth more then 8 per if he plays like he did 2 years ago. but i would say more like 6 mil because i beleive he is already on the downside which is evident by his slipping fg percentage which is usually a sign of your legs going. he also seems to be slightly bloating these days and we're already hearing grumblings about is knees which shouldn't suprise because thats what happens to players in there 30's. maybe i'm wrong but i don't see hedo's best days ahead of him

the fact that bargnani has 7 years before he where turkoglu is at is why he has the better contract. the fact that he's got 3 times the potential and is 3 times the players the hedo was at the same age. plus you add that he's a center which is the hardest position to fill with real talent. sure alot of his contract is based on potential but its not like bargnnai is raw. He's young, showing improvment and already has an amazing skillset, just needs to grow some chest hair and get a good kick in the ass

for me, bargnani is without a doubt the better risk

...Guys, get used to this until Barbnani proves something. You can call critics "idiots" or whatever but until Bargnani suits up and proves them wrong you are going to learn how to let some shit slide.

I think Turkoglu's contract is the worst of the two given that Hedo is about to enter the twilight of his prime.

Its getting a funny game.

Now here my 2nd Q: Show me another 6 mil/year SF to make comparison with Turk?

There is none. Anyone saying he's only worth 6 Mil is out to lunch.

He's an 8-10Mil player, especially when you look at the players around the league that make 10Mil/yr and you'd have to say he's worth at least what alot of them are and worth more then many of them, especially to a team like ours that desperately needed a player like him.

The fact is, the market dictates what a player gets. And if you look around he easily fits into the 8-10Mil groupe. I'll take him over Ben Gordon @ 11Mil/yr, even if Gordon is younger. And i'll take Turkoglu over Maggette any day who's contract is even worse.
