Default 07-08 Calderon Defense

Hey guys...haven't posted here in a while as I've been in Israel.

Anyways...with the recent potential MO for Jose rumors, I decided to check out a Cavs forum. A lot of Cavs fans seem extremely high on Jose.

When one poster wrote that his defense is terrible, someone replied that it's been due to his injuries, and that he was a good defender in 07-08.

As a Raps fan, last year my number one problem on the team was Jose's defense. Number one problem. Nothing else was more important to me. Can't stress that enough. I think him not being our starting point guard next year is a top priority.

Now I don't really remember how his defense was in 07-08, so I was wondering if you guys remember. Was he as bad as last year? Was he a walking pylone? Did he do useless double teams?

07-08, you mean when we barely squeezed into the playoffs at 41-41?

His defense was marginally better. But he was still pretty shit on D. The thing about him that year, is he had a pretty decent year at the offensive end that his D was kind of overlooked to a degree.

K guess I meant 06-07...year we won atlantic and 47 wins. I'm wondering if his offensive capabilities will possibly make certain teams overlook his defensive struggles

If anyone thinks he played a plodding walk it up the floor style this season, '07-'08 was just grindingly slow. Especially when the schedule was pretty heavy. That meant that he was exploited less on the other end through fewer overall possessions, and it allowed him to maintain some endurance.

That season he drove me crazy as a guy that played from free-throw line extended to free-throw line extended at best, especially when he was starting. He was not going to force anybody to guard him all the way to the baseline very often, because it made it too hard for him to recover going the other way, and he was not going to cover anybody else all the way to the basket, because he just wasn't capable of staying in front of most guards.

Sam tried to make his defensive weaknesses less glaring, but there were games, like the home game against the Warriors, where either speed, or size, or both, just destroyed him and killed the team's chances of a victory. I would hazard to guess that in trying to play better defensively, he put more stress on his body, which resulted in a lot of his injury problems. It's not that he failed to commit to playing defense, but that his body just ultimately breaks down.

That season teams didn't really look at exploiting his defense or stopping his offense. He was pretty much an unknown factor. He played some nice defense in the playoffs, but there again - ended up killing his ankle in a non-contact situation. If he had good wheels it would be a completely different story.

He's really unconfident defensively. A lot of "fake hustle". When he's on the defensive end he's trying not to look so bad, instead of trying to get stops.

When he has a choice, he is often making the choice which carries the least amount of responibility.

He's shook.

I don't remember him always being like this, but this is how he's been for the past few years.

Are you kidding me? I remember in 07-08 when people used to say Jose played GREAT D. Clearly you guys are just basing it on what happened the past 2 years. He isn't THAT bad now, but before he was better (according to fans/"experts"). Probably because he played the backup role where people just appreciated what he did as opposed to point out his flaws. Thing is, Jose had a bad year, but his assists went down because he wasn't allowed to be as free with Hedo taking possessions. I mean he is a really good point guard who understands the game, his defence is average, and it's overstated because he was getting passed too much. But realistically how many guards can stay in front of Deron Williams? Rajon Rondo? Chris Paul? or even Jose Calderon? That's why this game requires team defence. So unless you have Rajon Rondo, don't expect the "next" Raptors point guard to be light-years above Jose...and certainly not Mo Williams, who is about the same as Calderon laterally.

All I know is you can't go back in time or else we would have VC here from 1999-2000 & we would be in the running for a championship!

Jose can still play some great D. He can get stops. But he can't sustain that level of play. His body won't let him, and I think a lot of the confidence that he's lost comes from not being able to trust his legs.
