I don't think they'll go after Villa b/c his fee is way too high. They could get a cheaper, just as good alternative.

It'll be interesting to see Kaka and Ronaldo co-exist actually.

This totally smacks of Real back in the early 2000s when they were buying everyone and they just couldn't gel. Is this going to be a good move, or will it be a case of too many stars, only one ball? 80 million pounds, huh? Jesus. Talk about reaching for someone.

i just read this on skysports..fuck sakes this is ridiculous.

Ronaldo had outstayed his welcome after the whole fiasco last summer IMO. Madrid will praly recoup alot of money from advertising on this guy but absolutely ridiculous.

Soccer has got to change. How can any team compete with that?

I agree man. UEFA really should consider somekind of a cap system. It's getting to the point where in these big euro leagues there are only 2 teams or so that can do what they please, while the rest are just watching (and losing). It looks like la liga is going to be just a two horse race for many years to come. That can't be healthy for spanish soccer.

The only thing that makes me happy about this is that it looks Manchester aren't going to be as good as before.

Im torm by this trade. I cant stand him but obviously he is a hell of a player. With that money they could have bough Villa, Xabi Alonso and silva. The price is insane, but its true they always make money out of it because part of the deal is always to get 50% of what the player makes from endorsements and commercials. With Zidanes signing they made 300 million, with Beckhams 600 million. And they are getting Villa anyway wich is the player I want the most basically. Apparently is going to be 30 million and Negredo (A future pretty good player from Real).
They are going the get rid of a lot of players too so its said they might spend 300 million this summer. That means that is not absurd to think that Ribery and Xabi Alonso will come too.
Chemistry will be a challange, it will be interesting to see Pelegrini deal with it. He has very mild manners but didnt doubt one second to get rid of Riquelme when he showed bad attitude in Villareal. Early 2000s Real played really well for a good until the big implosion the year Ronaldo arrived.

And I agree its getting ridiculous, I would hate Real if it wasnt the team I grew up with. Its true that La liga has become a two horse race lately, but the mid level teams in spain are still the best in any league.
Also it wasnt for Real, there basically would be no market happeing right now. All this money they are spending is just going to help other teams pay their debts and trade. They have saved Milans ass paying that much for kaka, they are going to save Valencias by paying so much too for Villa.

80 M pounds... bend me over, fuck me and call me Susan

I love the guy, but that's just too much money too turn down. He was at times a selfish player in an unselfish system, but there's no way United win 3 leagues in a row and the Champions league without him. Be tough to replace the World Footballer of the year and 30-40 goals, but i think it'll at least mark a return to the proper United free flowing football the fans have been accustomed to. I just hope we don't waste a third of that amount on Tevez...

Now i finally need to get me GolTV.

I'm hoping some of this money will be spent on Benzema (and perhaps Ribery)

Damn, as much as I hated seeing Ronaldo win with United, I'm going to hate it worse winning with Madrid. This just shows you though... how club soccer is. It's hard to follow one team... because now all these little kid Christiano Ronaldo lovers will jump off the man united band wagon and join the Madrid wagon.

That's the thing. If Beckham and Ronaldinho head off to city this summer (which is unlikely but possible) my favourite 3 players in the world will be on Manchester City... even though Chelsea is my team. The way club football is... it's so wierd now.

Ribery and Benzema (if tevez leaves) to man united.

the passion for supporting a franchise is being totally subsumed by the cult of celebrity. in soccer, in basketball, in hockey... more and more it's about following a player rather than staying committed to your local squad. maybe i'm just old school, but this saddens me.

totally. Hence all of my rambling in the superfan thread. I just don't understand all this nonsense about "oh i'm a big fan of payer X, so now i am going to cheer for his new team" or even worse: "they're good so i am a fan of them."

you know what? that's the VERY DEFINITION of the term "fanboy", and quite frankly, it's not a flattering term. It's more of an insult.

Tied in to the discussion in the superfan thread, it's totally fine to say you're a fan of a sport and to be interested in watching games not involving "your team", but i don't see how anyone can watch that game with the same interest and passion as if they were watching their favorite team.

It's like people are so desperate to label themselves as fans of these vogue teams just because of the "status". Fuck it's so stupid.

The players are just jerseys and numbers to me. It's the team that is important. It's the team that I cheer for.

I think its fucking ******ed and EXPECT uefa to step in an put a stop to these outrageous fees. It's not just the money Real spent. It was too much 5 years ago and its only getting worse and worse.

Looks like Spain is just following suit or keepin up sorry with the rest of the other super clubs in every league across europe with $$ to burn. I cant knock just Real of course.

How about we take the rich clubs from each league and leave them on their own. My poor LCFC will never have a chance against the likes of these guys.

Thanks for ruining footy even more...keep on keepin on

The reality is you cant really blame Real for anything. Any team has two interests. Making money, making a good team. Both things go hand in hand. Real is doing that. They dont mind spending that much money because they know they will make much more out of it AND they will win titles and glory with this players.
And the players, people expect loyalty from them but they dont give it back (how many times has a player had a bad season and every "fan" wants him out) and they are treated like objects by most teams. Why should they be loyal to anyone. How many players have been kicked out of a team when they wanted to stay. When an oportunity appears its better just to run with the money for them. Can you really blame them for searching for a better career?

And UEFA doesnt really give a fuck. Theres a lot favoritism and making them agree to put a cap or whatever would be like trying to make the European Union agree if Kosovo is really a country.

It really is a disaster, from the system to the individuals. And I really dont see a solution. A cap would be OK but I really cant see it happening. They wont dare to piss off the big clubs.

Exactly when u watch international and club football... how can u decide?

I love England.. Gerrard and Lampard and I hate Deco. But when Chelsea play against Liverpool... I would love for Deco to score for Chelsea rather than Gerrard.

That's the thing... you basically have to follow players if u like club teams. On an international level... bandwagonners dont even make sense.

What Im trying to say is that there noone's to blame specifically. Everyone is looking for their own interest. A lot has to change because it has always been like this. Players should be more loyal to their teams, fans should be less radical and "respect" the players more (treat them like humans, not gods when they succeding or pariahs when they fail), Uefa should end the bias to certain teams and countries and put a cap to what players should make and a team can pay, big teams should respect small teams more, etc, etc...

If you think about it the only things left that are someawhat "pure" are the national teams. And thats what Figo was trying to say.

A report in Friday's Times newspaper claims that although the player, who is set to complete a word record Ģ80m move from Manchester United to Real by the end of the month, would initially earn Ģ9.5m-a-year the contract would include a 25% increase season-on season.

The 24-year-old is expected to sign a six-year contract at the Bernabeu, which means by the final year he would be on Ģ29m-a-year - or Ģ557,000-a-week - which is reportedly 33 times what the average Spaniard earns. And this is in a country which is suffering from high unemployment of over 18%.
