sure they can. look at Bayern Munich.
(but i concede that my hot streak argument isn't the strongest).

One thing we didn't take into account are the draws. Some teams have a far easier draw throughout the tournament than others - and that is totally 100% true.

It's not like every team in champs league plays every other team. That's impossible, but i can gaurantree you that the difficulty of opposition isn't perfectly balanced. You're never going to devise a system which is totally fair though.

But in domestic leagues, it's all an even playing field.

There are no style points in soccer. Goals are the only currency that counts.

But if there was ever a team deserving of extra reward for its verve and fluidity, it is the current incarnation of Barcelona, a club steeped in technical tradition and now blessed with perhaps the best blend of talent it has ever had.

Barca’s 6-2 thumping of hated rival Real Madrid on Saturday was the victory that effectively wrapped up the La Liga title. Yet the way the Catalan stars marched into the cauldron of the Santiago Bernabeu and dismantled their closest Spanish challenger was a world removed from the sort of tense performance that might be expected in such a pivotal game.

Pep Guardiola’s troops recovered from going a goal behind to humiliate Real with a display of superiority that defied belief. Even if Chelsea can make home-field advantage count in the teams’ UEFA Champions League semifinal second leg Wednesday, it is hard to make an argument against Barcelona being the best team in Europe.

Certainly, it is the most exciting. Lionel Messi, Samuel Eto’o and Thierry Henry are three of the most devastating attackers on the planet and it makes for compulsive viewing.

Whatever your allegiance, if you love soccer, you’ll get in front of a television screen for whenever Barcelona plays. This is a team for the ages and rarely have the lines between the athletic and the artistic been so blurred.

In an era when money rules soccer and results are the only thing that counts – because it translates most directly into cold hard cash – the sport is lucky to have this fluent band of stars who prove that style and substance can go hand in hand.

Anyone that thinks that in these kind of tournaments the best team always wins simple doesnt have a clue. Greece winning the Eurocup and Italy winning the worldcup is a nice example. 90% not the best team wins because luck is a huge factor. This game would have been completely different if that defender hadnt slipped in the first goal. That said. The finals have to be Manchester Vs Barsa. They are the best team and both deserve to be in the finals. Manchester deserves as much as Barsa to win it all. Still their Football is not as good as Barsas.

Dude, didn't you post this already?

In the end, whoever emerges triumphant from Champions League, deserves it. You gotta be good to be lucky, and lucky to be good.

One of the things about soccer is that many times is not a just game. Is part of the game, its also what its part of what it so interesting about it. Many many teams are not good when they win.

Barcelona is also undefeated not including one of their first matches in the champions league where they had already advanced and played no starters. Manchester was fairly lucky this year in the champions league.

There's a difference between winning the EPL and winning La Liga though. 3 of the final 4 teams in the champs league have been EPL the last 2 years... is that ALL luck?

And like I said Bel... one tournament can be luck.. maybe (Greece).. but 2 tournaments in a row for United?

But taking what you said about Greece into consideration.. if Barcelona end up winning.. it was all luck .

Whos saying is all luck? You should start reading what we post. Luck is a big part of the game particulary in elimination tournaments wich makes that many times not the best team wins the tournamets.
Mr. Hiddink said yesterday that every team in the world should admire Barcelona philosophy.
Im going to post it for the third time. Seems like you havent read it yet.

They got their chance at one of the top 3 in England. Last year they lost to Man U. This year they will probably lose to Chelsea. It's safe to say they're not the best... but definitely the most exciting.

Blowing out a real madrid side.. and a spanish league that is tier 2 to the EPL makes them gods?

hardly.

Since you are using arguments that dont have any sense at all, Ill join.

Champions Leagues won:

Real Madrid - 9

Chelsea - 0
Arsenal - 0
Man U - 3
Liverpool - 5

Real has more than all the Top 4 english teams together!!

That is your argument? A team's history makes them the best team present? What's the point of playing the games then?

Right now.. the top of the spanish league is not quite the top of the english team.

If man u wins the hardest league and the champions league.. and does it again.. luck is still a major part? Like TO said above.. what's the point of playing the tournament?? to see who the luckiest team is?

BS bel and you know it. Repeating this for Man U is unbelievable, and just because Barcelona play a nice free flowing game that you like to watch... does not make them the best team in the world.

Congrats to Man U for beating an inept, outclassed Arsenal squad.

And even though I watch the EPL, I seriously hate it at the same time.

they should really have an Elite Euro League so some of you guys can stop using luck as a factor
I still don't know how you can be lucky by winning an 8 month long tourney

Barca is like Phoenix but we all know that SA and Detroit won, and therefor were better teams

Leafs have won 13 Stanley Cups, does this make them better than the Bruins/Detroit/Van?

Chelsea vs. Barca today

I hope Chelsea shuts Barca down and proves they aren't the best in the world

A better comparison would be the Habs since they've won 26 or the Yankees since they've won 27?.

Real Madrid is still the class of Europe. They're struggling now, but historically they're one of the top teams in Europe along with teams like Juventus, AC Milan and Liverpool.

Man U was average up until 1995ish, Arsenal was average until 1996, Chelsea really became a player with Abramovich in control.
