I'm not trying to pin blame or find excuses, but i am genuinely curious. While there is usually a fair bit of complaining about a new tournament ball, this one has gotten a lot of hate. It's a lighter ball right? Well physics alone may make it sail higher than usual or react differently to spin. makes you wonder.

Anyways, it will be a very interesting finish to that group.

New balls are ridiculous, thanks for bringing that up. When I played guys could hoof a ball 3/4 of the way down a field. No way.

These guys are missing the net by 10-20 feet with this newer ball over the last 5 years or so (perhaps more?)

Something needs to change, its boring.

Are the Swiss even ranked in the Top 20?

Spain is the best team in the world.

If you're telling me that that result didn't surprise you then I need you to pick some lotto numbers for me.

Swiss are 24 I think and rankings are dumb, Portugal is 6th, Korea of the North is 101 but they could beat 5-7 teams in this tourney
Spain is like Cleveland and they haven't won a WC
I thought Spain would win 1-0 or 2-1, not 4-0

ya the rankings aren't gospel, but come on it's a HUGE upset. Nobody saw that coming. Not even die hard Swiss supporters. This was the definition of a shocker.

The Swiss have played together for years and have a lot of chemistry. There's a reason they're there.

Now Spain SHOULD have dismantled them but this happens to a lot of teams (curiously by the Swiss). Think of Canada and hockey and when they played the Swiss. We should've destroyed them but we didn't. It happens.

That being said, the ball is def. affecting the play of game and I wouldn't be surprised if those vuvuzela's are also affecting play to an extent.

this world cup you see a lot of poor play so far so its not going to shock me when I see an upset
I could see SA finishing 1st in their group

can we just give Germany the cup now?

Very true. Not saying that it could NEVER happen.

Just don't tell me that it wasn't an upset lol.... no matter how much "chemistry" the Swiss have they were the decided underdogs against a team chock full of great, young players fresh off of a Euro title.

It was an upset but in all honesty it isn't surprising.

I've watched that Swiss team before many times. They're a tough team.

I'll argue that Spain took them lightly and it bit them in the ass. That being said, Spain dominated that game.

hahaha so you say NOW. Remember a while back we were having a converstation about SA in the pool thread and you wrote off my suggestion that SA would win a game.

see here: CBC world cup pool

point is in my opinion Spain losing is a shock to the soccer world any which way you look at it. Of course it was a possibility, but i don't think any 'expert' would have predicted it.

anyways, Swiss and South Korea in the final rights?

they won't win
every game in the group will be a tie, but SA will win the tiebreaker on most goals scored

its not a big shock and people who think that haven't paid attention to history
they are an underachieving team in big tournaments and haven't won many international tourneys (they did win Euro 08) they did lose to US in the confed cup

Germany - South Korea final, can't wait

Lol.... the Spanish teams of the past were known for having great talent... but they didn't play as a team and had some monstrous egos (case in point Raul who was left off the Euro squad).

THIS spanish side has talent... but they also play very well together. What did they have going? a 35 match winning streak before the States beat them in Confed?

EVERY soccer critic, analyst and former player said that Spain shouldn't have had any problem with the Swiss.... so unless you think you know more than them?

The confed cup though means very little. Euro 08 means far more.

Again, 1 loss is not a big deal. Better to get it out of the way now as far as I can see.

I thought Spain would get to the semis so I do know they're good
they should have won, but people think they were going to steamroll over the group when they are not, maybe Honduras
