Jeff you're hilarious.

Leaf fans are fans of a sports team and like to support a sports team that it. There's nothing more to it than that. All those things you said can be applied to Raptor fans too except wait the Raptors have never won anything period. In fact it's pretty clear to me that inferiorty does play a factor. Even with all the failure, the Maple Leafs are one of the most popular teams in the whole country. There's something about them that appeals to many, many people. Watch a game in Vancouver, Calgary and yes even Montreal when Toronto comes to town and you'll see how many leaf jerseys there are in the audience.

You act like this is some big social problem in the city when really you're just making it one in your head. And honestly, who even cares. Do gangs of Leaf fans egg your house everynight? break your windows? follow you around and make fun of you? Jesus you make it seem like these people won't leave you alone.

There's a good one....the Raptors have never won anything. lol

You're comparing an expansion team that's been around for 15yrs that hasn't won to a team that hasn't won shit in 43 yrs and their glory years was vs 5 teams 4 decades ago. lol

Thank you for that. I needed a good laugh before going to work.

honestly, making fun of a team for not winning when the very team you support has won less. Pathetic.

What's pathetic is comparing a team that's been around 100+yrs to a team that has been around 15 and saying they've done less. That's rich.

jeff -

what i said inferiority complex i was referring to people like you. all statistics aside - people like you (fans of other toronto sports teams) are jealous that the leafs get so much attention from the toronto media, despite perpetual suckage, and are bitter that the Raptors have to achieve so much more to get even a fraction of that attention. you proceed to take it out on leafs fans who in reality are no different than you, besides being a fan of the most popular team in the city.

do i wish our sports channels broadcast more basketball coverage? of course. do i hate leafs fans for it? no, that's juvenile. the market dictates what the television channels broadcast. the vast majority of this country's population wants hockey, hockey, hockey.

actually what's truly pathetic is (as trane suggested) is holding a big huge grudge over something you apparently have no interest in.

Hahhh, in a thread asking why Leaf fans are hated. You in your infinite wisdom had to know i would say something. Why not ignore it? I understand when i've gone into the hockey thread in the past. But thsi was a question posed and i posted.

what i find interesting is that in this day in age i think people can get their fill of Raptors and non hockey stuff pretty easily. I am a bigger Raptor fan than a Leaf fan by a pretty large margin and i have no problem keeping up. I mean there's a whole channel devoted to the team.

There's two things that i could do without when it comes to hockey coverage. 1. panels and 2. hockey only shows like "that's hockey". Personally i just don't watch them. and magically poof! they don't bother me anymore.

i'm pretty sure fancy is pointing to the fact that your obvious grudge against a team and sport you don't profess to care about goes a lot farther than this thread. it comes up every time the leafs are mentioned dude, so don't give that incredibly weak excuse.

Like i said in my post earlier. Even when i was a leaf fan i hated leaf fans. Take from that what you will, but Leaf fans have always rubbed me the wrong way even when i was routing for the same team. They're the most delusional, insecure fanbase there is.

I tought we were just ignored? Or they barely knew we were in the league and never gave any thought to us? Yet oddly I thought this was a thread about loaf fans.

This question is most interesting when you do as you do, contrast the behaviour of the fans of other teams against the behaviour of Leafs fans.

First and foremost, there are two things about Leafs fans that bother me:

1) They receive a disproportionate amount of coverage based on their success
2) They receive a disproportionate amount of fandom based on their success

To me, the highest calling in sport is to play at a level (in terms of performance, effort, or both) that is, in some sense, rare. Accordingly, I don't begrudge any Lakers fans who watch for that purpose. There is, however, something to be despised about those who cheer for the Lakers not because they're witnessing the Lakers organization exceed at a high level, but because they, too, can become counterfeit champions by attaching themselves to a team with a great deal of success (they attempt to steal credibility via proximity).

What I totally disagree with is the people like jeffb who spend so much time complaining about the Leafs and hockey that we end up talking more about them as a result. If you don't like the topic of conversation, show it with your feet and your dollars; don't support, even tangentially, sports you claim to have no interest in (I have to wonder how someone can claim that the league of which they constantly speak is of no consequence).

I cheer for the leafs.

They have had 3-4 teams in the last 15 years that had the elements to win but didn't quite get it done.

Big whoop.

It's hard to win in Toronto.

There's a lot of pressure, and it's pretty widely known.

Leaf teams also get the oppositions A game every night. Also widely known and talked about by NHL players openly. The Majority of non-leaf players say they step it up when they play the leafs because they are the team.... they are the center of the NHL universe.

Couple that with some horrid management groups (ballard comes to mind) and some poor decisions by the MLSE over the years that were made to bolster the books and not the product... you see how a team can lose.

Oh, ya, and Gretzky-gate..... it was real. the NHL wanted the Kings in the final. Gretz got away with one there.

Anyhow, why do people always need to rip other teams and their fans.

Like who ya want, cheer, be blind, be homers, who cares. it's fun. And taking it to the serious level of actually dislike or hatred is absolutely stupid and stinks of a serious mental deficiency.

The Leafs have sucked large more than not since they last won the cup. so what? people like um. It's pretty simple, let um like um.

You pretty much nailed it. All you forgot to add was the "/thread".

Actually he didn't nail anything considering this is a thread about Leaf Fans, which has nothing to do with the media coverage or anything her talked about. Maybe he'd have a point if the thread wasw asking why people hate the leafs and the media.

sure he did. His point was that many people hate Leaf fans because of the team itself and the overexposure said team gets. This was repeated by others as well and i can admit there is probably some truth to it. It's a simple connection to make.

Just a few like you.

And thats fine.

So you know..... who cares?

That's obviously part of it. I've gone off about the media. But I was more or less talking about fans in general. Listen there are many reasons to hate the leafs, the media and their fans when one isn't a leaf fan. But I thought this was just about the fans themselves.
