Also, I make sure I have the best footwear possible. I love the running room. Actually, I just bought the new Saucony Hybrids plus the new Hurricane model.
Nice.

I always ran on a gravel track at the nearset high school and I never had a problem with my joints.

I always wonder what these guys running on the sidewalk are thinking.

Even walking to and from work every day (3.5 km each way) and I used to get the worst shin splints and half the time my ankles felt like mush.

before i became a middle-aged man with a kid, a band, a bad back, and a full-time job i played as many sports as i could. rugby, hockey, competitive swimming, and basketball were my main sports, but i also did baseball, football, track, tennis, soccer, golf, canoeing (racing), summer triathalon's, ultimate frisbee... i spent almost all of my time in sport.

now that i'm old, broken down and have no free time i've had to limit it to basketball and, if i'm very lucky, the odd round of golf. it's a sad state of affairs, really, but not too much i can do. maybe when the kid is a little older i'll get into a slo-pitch league, but i'd really rather increase the amount of golf. it's a lot more condisive to pints and the odd cigar...

to keep ion shape, what i really should be doing is swimming. much better on the back and knees and it's a great workout. only chance i really get is at the cottage with my folks.

Oh yea. after reading 'trane's post I remembered. I also play golf. I need to improve though. I suck with any clubs and love the irons, 4 iron is my favourite. The furthest I have ever hit is 200. I only started playing 3 years ago though

i run a lot (outside).

Other than that I play tennis pretty regularily. By the sound of it, so do a lot of guys - We should have an "RF Open" or something.

In the winter i x-country ski (skate technique).

When i was younger (highschool and before i played lots of team sports though. Baseball, Soccer, basketball... I suck at these sports now mainly becuase i haven't played them in yeeeears - and have nobody to play with. sucks.

I love swimming alot too actually. Before I run, I head down to the school to get a few laps in the pool, just to warm me up. Ever since I started that though, my back has been feeling better and better.

Another thing I love is working on the punching bag. There's an awesome cardio work out, that takes 15 minutes and you can do in your basement. Plus gets any aggression out.

And Acie, I wonder the same too. I mean, I read all these articles saying how older people have problems with their joints when running and they mention they run on sidewalks. Nuts.

For all you runners and those people complaining about your joints, THIS is the solution:

Vibram Five Fingers: Discover the Barefooting Alternative <--- LINK HERE

I bought the KSO's, they aren't the "running" one but they have the same bottom material. I run completely differently.

I've had them for 2 months, I recommend them to anyone! You do get the occasional "This guy is insane" look but it's well worth it!

I had my knees bugging me (nothing diasnosed though) and I have tendonitis in my feet which doesn't bother me at all now.

GET THEM. They were like 85 bucks at MEC.

I use them when I go hiking or running cross country. On the regular street, I find they're not as good.

Ahh I forgot, I used to cross country ski. I live in Labrador so you have a lot of snow season to ski with, I don't know why I stopped.

I should start running, but half of the year the town is loaded with snow, in the middle season averaging at about 6 feet high. Its hard to find time for me to go for a run in the summer while I work every weekday at my dads office, and then whenever I get shifts at the drugstore I work at, and I play basketball in the mens league twice a week and softball twice a week.

In high school - basketball, cross-country and track.
Now - basketball, hockey and soccer. (When I can find the time, which is almost never).

Basketball,Soccer, Floor Hockey, Football, & Baseball.

Basketball and baseball being the most fun to play IMO.
Soccer's good but only with people of or near the same skill level.
