vuvuzelas - yay or nay?

Vuvuzelas. these things:

It's hard not to notice them when you watch any match. The constant buzzing and trumpeting that just doesn't quit.

I find they can get a little annoying at times, but overall they don't bother me too much. Actually a few times i thought they sounded cool. The only real negative IMO, is that they drown out the crowd reactions to big plays/goals. that and you can't hear crowd chanting and singing, which has always been a big part of the soccer atmosphere. Still i realise that soccer atmosphere in South Africa involves the vuvuzela and i am all for getting the genuine feel of the event.

Now the thing i find a little funny is that there was actual discussion to ban them. To me this is a bit overly dramatic, but i guess some people have a different priority list.

Despite criticism from World Cup TV viewers around the globe that the swarm-of-bees sound from the plastic horns is stinging their ears, the organization left no doubt Monday that the uniquely African soundtrack is here to stay.

"I have always said that Africa has a different rhythm, a different sound," Sepp Blatter, president of soccer's governing body, said in a Twitter post. "I don't see banning the music traditions of fans in their own country."

He went on to ask, "Would you want to see a ban on the fan traditions in your country?"

FIFA and Blatter have strongly backed the use of vuvuzelas since they were introduced to the wider football world at the Confederations Cup test event in South Africa exactly a year ago

thats the main problem I have with them
the atmosphere is the same in every stadium and you can't hear chants that make certain countries unique

some people in my family dislike them but I got used to it
I don't like it, but I don't want to force them to take it away if people/fans in SA like them
I hear that earplugs are the #1 selling item

Some times they get annoying but it's not a big factor.

The BBC is considering filtering out crowd noise from its World Cup broadcasts following a deluge of complaints about vuvuzelas.

By Tuesday morning, the BBC had received 545 complaints from viewers about the constant buzzing sound of the plastic horns used by fans at games in South Africa.

"We have already taken steps to minimize the noise and are continuing to monitor the situation," the BBC said in a statement. "If the vuvuzela continues to impact on audience enjoyment, we will look at what other options we can take to reduce the volume further."

I hate it. It has been such a letdown because the atmosphere at big soccer matches os usually such a large part of the appeal.

This is the thing.... there is no rhythm... no music. Just an annoying drone.

Vuvuzelas distract fans and players at the World Cup, but the horns aren't the only sports annoyances fans must endure - ESPN

Was it just me or were they not as noticeable in the Portugal / Cote D'Ivoir match today? You could hear them, but to me it sounded like they were in the background for the most part. In some parts you could actually hear the crowd fluctuate to the excitement on the pitch and not just the horns. Maybe it was because that stadium had somewhat of a roof i don't know.

I heard on the news and they said that the audio people used a mixer to dim it down

I heard Sepp Blatter is charging people per vuvuzela entrance
