RICHMOND, Virginia (CNN) -- Michael Vick, once one of the highest paid players in the National Football League, was sentenced to 23 months in prison for financing a dogfighting ring and helping to kill pit bulls that did not fight aggressively.

Vick's stunning downfall from NFL superstar to disgraced dogfighting defendant culminated Monday in a 90-minute sentencing hearing in federal court in Richmond, Virginia.

Vick, 27, faced a maximum of five years in prison. Federal sentencing guidelines recommended a sentence of 12 to 18 months.

Animal rights protesters lined up outside the courthouse. Some carried signs with photographs of dogs, while others read "Dogs deserve justice," and "Report dog fighters."

Vick and three co-defendants still face trial on state dogfighting charges in Virginia. They are accused of torturing and killing dogs and promoting dogfights -- all felonies that carry five-year maximum sentences.

In his August plea agreement, Vick admitted bankrolling the "Bad Newz Kennels" dogfighting operation on his 15-acre property in rural Surry County in southeastern Virginia.

Vick also admitted providing money for bets on the fights but said he never shared in any winnings.

According to court documents, dogs that failed to show enough fighting spirit or lost matches were executed. Some dogs died by electrocution and others by hanging or drowning.

23 months is not enough.

Dr. J. Naismith 12-10-2007 12:09 PM

I also hope to hell he doesn't play another game in the NFL.

Belsius 12-10-2007 12:16 PM

They should put him in a cage to fight to death with mike tyson. Lets see how funny he finds it.

Benzo 12-10-2007 12:58 PM

I think before they puthis pitbulls down, they should put him in a cage with them.

It is not enough time, he'll be out in 6 months. I hope he does play one more game of football and somebody goes out there and puts him out. Yes I am wsihing harm on another human.

I like that idea :)

INSIDER 12-10-2007 01:55 PM

is it true he's on the verge of bankruptcy?
LOL... loser.

Ball Don't Lie 12-10-2007 02:31 PM

They should lock him in a cage with 3 rotweillers and dump barbeque sauce on him.

At least the judge went over the 18 month recommendation, but still, 23 months isnt enough. He should got 5+ years, dude is sick in the head.

Vick made a bad decision :( and now he will have to face the consequences. He was convicted and will serve time. When his time served is complete life goes on hopefully vick and others have learned a valuable lesson.

Decision isnt really the word, and people like that dont learn lessons from jail time for something like what he did, dude is just sick in the head, he needs to go to a mental institution after his sentence.

i have some hope for the guy.
he's really lost it all. money, fame, respect... everything.
hopefully he'll grow up and actually have some real remorse for what he did.
guys like that really have no clue that they have done anything wrong... they live in their own world where they think they are above all and that nothing can touch them.
he got his, and he's lost it all.

he's an idiot.
an immature idiot.
hopefully he'll learn that life isnt about him and that he'll have to start from scratch and live a normal life.
he shouldve got the full 5 year sentence, he would have definitely learned his lesson for sure.

You guys dont understand that this stuff is of the norm where he's from. I dont totally blame him, I blame the people that surrounded him, cuz ever since college he has always had some people making choices for him. He might be the alleged but he is also the victim.

23 months is a long time considering he's an athlete and how OJ Simpson got nothing for murdering 2 people.

Arthur Blank(owner of Falcons) has already stated that he plans to welcome back Vick after he serves his time.

I dont think he's bankrupt, he signed a long term deal worth over 100 million dollars 3 years ago, but maybe he is cause i found out that they tried auctioning his home but noone was interested.

Im not defending Vick in anyway whatsoever beacuse what he did is cruel and punishable, but he is only human......a sick twisted type!

Yes you are! You are calling him a victim, aren't you?
Sheit.. Vick isn't a victim in any way. He is a man of extremely poor judgement and he gets his jollies by enflicting brutal harm on animals. That's pretty messed up.

Whatever, he's not mentally retarded or anything. He knew dog fighting wasn't legal, but he did it anyway. you can't excuse his actions because he was just "following the in-crowd" or letting people make desicions for him as you said. That's weak.

The dead and hurt dogs are the victims.

Dr. J. Naismith 12-20-2007 01:10 PM

Sorry Iggy, whether its considered the norm or not, its still unacceptable in society. Death for nothing other than barbaric reasons isn't the norm, but his letter to the judge is a feeble attempt to make him look sincerely sorry for what he had done. If killing animals is the "norm" where he grew up, then he feels no remorse now and is just grasping for straws in order to save whatever dignity he has left.

Personally he got off waaaaay too light and should of gotten a longer sentence. But anyways, the damage is done and he'll like never play another game in the NFL ever. Thank god.

Lucky none of you guys have been to China. ;)

Belsius 12-20-2007 03:15 PM

Or Korea, but its different to eat them, to fight them to death. Although I really dont want to know how they treat them there.

IggyPosterizes 12-20-2007 03:18 PM

lol ya or anywhere else in Asia for that matter. Animals are what they are "animals" and those poor people see them as just meat....delicious, tasty meat.:D

Not one city or town will you find a petland.

I dont think they have dog fighting there but im pretty sure they enjoy a lot of cock fighting.

INSIDER 12-20-2007 03:29 PM

i like cock fighting with my GF...
i slap her with it like a bat!
