I think this is a pretty well-balanced viewpoint that I can very much buy into

Rafa Nadal and the French Open - Grantland

Quote:
And you could make the same case about what Sunday's win means for Rafa's career, particularly in light of his ongoing comeback from knee hell. It proves, fairly amazingly, that he's back and playing major-champion-quality tennis. A few weeks ago, even though he'd won six of his seven past tournaments, that didn't seem obvious. Judging from his Uncle Toni's tearful reaction to the win against Djokovic on Friday, it might not have been obvious to the members of his own team. Well, let the return of the annual trophy-tasting ceremony remove all doubt: Rafa is a force on the tour again.

But what kind of force? From one angle, all he's done is show he can still win a tournament that he's always expected to win. Has he come back from injury only to resume his slight decline of 2011 and 2012 (both years he also won the French Open), or has he come back ready to challenge Djokovic's and Murray's supremacy at the green-floored majors?

That's a greedy question, but the historical stakes are so high for Rafa that it's one we have to ask. Let's assume for the sake of argument, by which I mean tragic obviousness, that Federer will never win another major. Federer has 17 majors; Nadal has 12. Nadal is 27 and has a frowny-face emoticon in place of a left knee. He's probably not going to win six more French Opens, and even if he does, a résumé with 14 majors on clay and four on grass and hard courts feels more like a gigantized case of clay-court-specialitis than the CV of the greatest player to pick up a racket. But what if he were to win, say, three more titles in Paris, two in London, and one in New York? That would give him 18 majors: 11 French Opens (a record that will never be touched at any Grand Slam–level tournament), four Wimbledons, two U.S. Opens, and one Australian Open. He'd have won more majors than Federer, beaten Federer in 66 percent of their matches, and achieved his haul of majors during the primes of both Djokovic and Murray (unlike Federer, who is older than the other three top guys and won a fistful of titles before they were real competition). At that point, how do you even make an argument against his being the best player in the history of the sport?

Nadal is divisive among tennis fans. Purists and David Foster Wallace diehards will never rank him above Federer if there's a way to avoid it. (I'm both; I know.) So that's what he's playing for now — everything, essentially. It's not a question of legacy so much as a matter of self-definition. Is he a freak of clay wizardry who took advantage of some cracks in Federer's late style to win a few mainstream majors before Djokovic showed up? Or is he the best and toughest player who's ever done this thing, someone who emerged in the immediate wake of a transcendent superstar and willed himself to out-transcend him? This French Open, as awesome as it was, can't tell us. But it's the most fascinating question in tennis. It may turn on a couple of ligaments, but then no one said sports wasn't stupid. Here's to good health, tasty silver, and Nadal vs. everybody at Wimbledon in a couple of weeks.

i was thinking about the women's game recently and is it an easy call to say that Serena Williams is the greatest women's player of all time?

Other players that come to mind are Navratilova and Graf and i don't know the stats at all, but i just get the feeling that serena gets that title.

Darcis is ranked 135th. There are 128 players in the tournament. So really, he shouldn't even be here.

His thong must've been too tight today and too hard to pick out.

It's fucking depressing. He's probably pretty much done for good. I really wanted a third act out of his career.

He's won plenty of tournaments this year, but it was after he decided to just test the knee in spite of not seeing the results he wanted. All his wins came on the surface easiest on his knee. Maybe he still gets to play on clay a bit longer, but it's hard to see someone training full time just for a handful of tournaments and one major. He was very close to packing it in late last year. It would seem he has to look at that ugly truth once again.

as much as I am a fedoror fan, it's sad to see this. hard to take in. growing up I knew federor, then rafa, then djoko. tough to swallow.

then again he might just pull through for another year. who knows

Way to go Andy! Weird match. It looked like Novak had a great shot at winning every set, but ended up losing three straight. The wear and tear is showing a bit this year. A five setter today would have gone over 5 hours and that's after he looked pretty gassed before the first was over. He might have been better off in the long run by having this one done after 3 and a half hours.

Love the polish kid Andy beat in the semis.

So I stayed up and watched the marathon Milos match last night. It was the first time he really fully grabbed my attention. I was having a hard time seeing how he was ranked tenth, but he showed a lot of growth in what I saw last night. He went through a good stretch where he looked superior to a Del Potro. He was defending for once, when needed, moving his feet very well, showing a deft touch at the net, hitting solid ground strokes and really nice angles, and just staying in points and doing something with them. He had a backhand that proved useful. And he fought through some tough spots with some pretty good mental toughness. But there was still too much of the Milos that left me having doubts. Too many errors. His feet stopped moving once his legs began to wear down. And mentally he choked away far too many big points. Still, he got a match point, and showed that if he can sustain his higher level of play, and improve from there, he is going to have some big moments.

Crazy good. Just fucking crazy. Could Nadal be entering his prime right now? I know I felt sure that his career was over just a few months ago. But then he comes out with nothing wrapped on his leg, and proves to be unbeatable. On hard courts. It's just crazy. He did look very beatable during a stretch tonight. Again I thought he was done. For tonight at least. But nope. Not even close. Nuts.

So any what the fuck how the fuck holy fuck moments. These two guys bring the best out of each other. Like crazy. Don't let it end. Don't let me even suggest it might end anytime soon.

13 in the books. And a gold medal. And a Davis Cup. A career grand slam. The guy that has been in the best match on grass, the best match on clay, and the best match on the hard court. And still getting better. And number one again.

Nadal over Federer in straight sets, on a hardcourt. And he's ranked number one.

as great as nadal is, I don't think he'll ever match federor's talent at his peak. that was jaw drop worthy. best to have every played it.

So let me get this straight. In all the wins against Federer, none of them occured when Roger was at his peak? That would suggest Roger's peak coincided with the period where he saw very little competition as he cruised easily to finals appearances where he beat the likes of the great Safin, and the unforgettably superior Andy Roddick. Nadal has consistently had to beat players better than that in the quarters.

I would tend to agree that Fed is the most purely talented ever, but in terms of how talent gets used in conjunction with the mental and physical aspects of the game, it's no contest. And the results show that. It was Roger that broke down in tears right? He knew his talent was not enough anymore. He needed to face a real challenge, and could not meet it. Prime over at that point i guess?

And if you are going to tell me Nadal never had your jaw dropping, then you are missing something.

Miss Bouchard with the upset over Ivanovic making her the first Canadian to make it to the semis of a Grand Slam.... ever!

Nishikora pushes Nadal in 3 tough sets... kid has some game.

Federer cruises past Tsonga and is looking like the Fed of old for the first time in a long while. Will definitely catch him vs. Andy next round in the Q's.
