Oh my, what a fine match! Beautiful rallies, lovely ground strokes, wicked passing shots ... Rafa is amazing. And Novak is no slouch.

All he needs is to win the Aussie Open in a few months time to complete the calendar career grand slam. Get it done, Rafa!

Djokovic was sweet. I love his fight. His serve is nice and the forehand is insane. Just the sort of thing that once was capable of beating Nadal pretty easily on hardcourts. I said a year ago that the guy was still getting better and just needed to get healthy to get into the discussion of being amongst the best ever. It's a shame that he didn't quite get through the tourney without losing a set. Damn weather.

As for Novak - it's got to be crazy to finally get past Federer and then hit the wall against an ever improving Nadal. I hope he gets a big win for himself soon - he's deserving.

It shouldn't. Not yet IMO.

Rafa has been absolutely dominant at the French but he's only won the Aussie and US Opens once each. And he only has 9 grand slam titles.

Fed has 16.... so yeah. No hate towards Rafa, he's all class and he's played like the best player this season for sure but slow down a bit and let's see where he goes from here.

If he can get up around 14 slams THEN we can start talking about "best ever".

Yeah, I kinda agree with TO ... I am a huge (HUGE) Rafa fan; however, I think we have to wait and see about this "greatest of all time" stuff. Hopefully, he will have a terrific 2011 campaign, maybe add a few more Grand Slams ... if he remains healthy, I can see him slowly catch up to Roger and then we can seriously argue about the "greatest of all time" thing.

Have to say though ... "only has 9 Grand Slam titles" ... only? I remember people writing him off as a one-surface wonder ... how wrong they all were.

Rafa has more Grand Slam titles than Roger did at the same age ... just pointing that out.

Heh-heh.... 9 grand slams is a lot Tazzie... I say "only" only when I compare him to Fed.

And you'e right about Rafa having more slams than Fed. at his age. Let me be clear... there's no reason that Rafa COULDN'T keep excelling and surpass Roger... I just want people to hold off a bit until he actually gets there is all.

have to agree with holding off on the greatest of all time stuff...although he is obviously a phenomenal player, he still has a lot to prove before he deserves that title
i remember everyone on the planet calling Tiger the greatest of all time a few years ago..now he can't win a tournament because his swing sucks so much..in fact he can barely stay competitive right now
for his sake, i hope Rafa can continue to get better and stay away from injuries...because he's real fun to watch

How many majors did Federer win by beating Nadal?

How many did Nadal win by beating Federer? Who broke down in tears after straight sets and who won major after major without getting close to losing, even when pitted against great players playing extremely well?

The number of wins is one thing - the quality of wins is another. Nobody is ever going to be the absolute best ever - it's apples and oranges in different eras. Nadal is among the best of the best at this moment with the quality of his wins, having done what only few have managed to do. Anything he adds from here on in will only further the legend, but he's already achieved as much as he could without winning a slam in the same calendar year. That alone might actually slow him down a little from this point. I have to wonder where he will get his drive from this point on.

Who exactly did Nadal beat in this US Open other than Djokovic and maybe Verdasco?

He didn't have to face Murray... Tsonga and Del Potro were out because of injury... his end of the draw was incredibly easy for a player of his calibre. If Roger would have been in that half he'd have gone to the finals easily.

Don't get me wrong Rafa IS playing out of his mind right now... but it isn't as if Fed. beat a bunch of scrubs for his titles either. He lost to a red-hot Del Potro last year.... and beat Murray, Djokovic, Roddick, Agassi and Hewitt for his other US Open wins. All of those guys are/were pretty darn good.

I wasn't making it about Nadal v Federer in terms of either/or. They both get into the club of greats. Yes - if Nadal gets more majors eventually then he definitely outshines Federer. But for now they both need to be discussed together in the same group.

Depends on what "group" you're talking about.

If you're talking about who the best player in the world is then yes.

If you're talking about who the best player EVER is then no. I'd still put Sampras and Roger over him due to their accomplishments.

As you say though... if Rafa keeps playing like this and adds 4 or 5 more majors over the next 2 years or so then I'd agree wholeheartedly.

Pete Sampras only reached the semis of Roland Garros once, if my memory serves me correctly, in gosh knows how many tries whereas Nadal has reached (and has now won) the semis of the US Open at least twice ... if you put stock in results on their weakest surfaces, I think Rafa is definitely up there with Pete Sampras. Still behind Roger Federer, but up there with Sampras.

Fed played Dabul, Beck, Mathieu, and Melzer ... that is as easy a draw as Nadal's.

If Roger had served better and had cut down on his unforced errors, I have no doubt that he would have made it to the finals.

He is amazing and makes the game look so easy but he had a horrid semi-final. Really, there isn't a lot more to say.

The quality of Rafa's wins puts him on equal footing with all the greats period. Roger should be noted for rescuing the men's game from the non-rally era. I loved Sampras - but that was definitely a different brand of tennis, and he had absolutely nobody to match up with. When Federer came along, the same was true for him for quite a while. For Nadal - that can only be said for clay. He played in, and won, the greatest match ever. He won a gold medal. And many of his other more one-sided wins have been pretty great as well in terms of overcoming strong matchups.

Ranking a handful of the best is crazy. How do you put anyone ahead of Borg? Completely different game in many ways. And they all faced different degrees of tests. Accomplishments in terms of numbers doesn't mean all that much aside from putting them in that group automatically. If Nadal continues to improve and just annihilates the numbers, then it might be possible to hand him the overall crown. That would be a ways off yet for sure.

Is anyone watching the Barclay's ATP Tour Finals event in London? The round robin matches start tomorrow and there are some pretty good ones ... Soderling Vs. Murray in the afternoon and Nadal Vs. Roddick in the evening.
