I didnt. I just dont understand what you are trying to say. The classical olympic games were spawned by and flourished under ancient greece for hundreds of years. They went into significant decline under the romans, and when they had a brief roman renaissance, it was as quasi - gladiatorial contests, so the point you made above makes no sense. Why point to the bloodthirsty roman empire to try to make that point?

You should read the roman portion of this:

Makes no difference, I thought it was pretty evident that I was talking about ancient Olympic games (my mistake if I wasn't clear enough). I think you are trying to nitpick something that's not related to my point.
Do you disagree that Olympics games are suppose to be a symbol of athletic competition and all of the political disagreements should be on pause?

Quote:
Politics -- at least the negative kind -- had no place in the ancient games. The event was made possible in part by a truce (in Greek, ekecheiria, which literally means "holding of hands") that allowed visitors and competitors to travel to Olympia safely. During the truce there was no war, no executions, and no military action.

I agree that the Ancient Greek games were like that, to a degree. I strongly disagree that the roman games were. I also strongly disagree that the modern games are in any way politics free. In fact the whole point of hosting them is to show political clout. You think Putin isn't trying to flex his muscles?

The Olympics have become a vehicle for capitalism and for political posturing. Governments are doing this in both obvious and insidious ways. This is a perfect time for citizens to speak up.

We don't need to watch Winter Olympics when it snows in Portland, we just watch the news.

Yea maybe, but I think it also brings money and much needed infrastructure (in Sochi's case) to the community. It also increases tourism, so I don't believe it's all about political muscle flexing.

I don't mean to be an ass but that's an extremely naive take on politics and development. If this were really about tourism and infrastructure then why don't we do it in poor countries and why doesn't the international community help to fund the development and infrastructure projects?

I am not saying it's about development of the city, but it certainly doesn't hurt to have new infrastructure or jobs created.
As for politics I already said it's not my thing

listening to the radio tonight and some guy on with Jeff sammut said that even if Canada wins the most medals, the only thing people will remember is whether or not the men's Canadian hockey teams wins gold or not. That the rest is essentially irrelevent and nobody will remember most of the athletes that win these medals.

Meh doesn't surprise me at all it's hard to remember all of the athletes. Especially if they don't appear on the tv or newspapers very often (unless you follow that sport). On the other hand the I only player I know on the national hockey team is Crosby.

But why say it? Honestly, he sounded like an absolute dick. And most people calling in and tweeting the show were saying he was wrong and that it was about Country unity, the overall athletes and it wasn't just about hockey. He would then say he wasn't buying it.....i swear these puckhead media guys are either insecure or obsessed.....maybe both.

Because they were discussing the Olympics in general and were about to talk to a Raptor assistant coach, wanted to listen to that.

that is a dick attitude to have but honestly who cares what some dick thinks.

for what it's worth i am listening more and more to TSN radio. Other than Tim and Sid i put TSN radio on before the FAN. Morning show guy in particular (Mike Richards?) is so much better than the fan guys

if there's one thing that i am having a hard time about these olympics with it's the time zone difference. My wife and i basically PVR a bunch of shit during the day and then watch it later at night (fast forwarding to the events we want to see). For the most part i am avoiding the results as they happen so that is why i tend to not come into this thread all that much.

So far the olympics have been great. I especially like the less popular events as well as the traditional winter stuff OVER hockey because that is more of what the olympics is about. to me at least. Don't get me wrong though i look forward to the hockey as well. Should be a great tourny.
