MAPLE LEAFS FIRE HEAD COACH WILSON, NO REPLACEMENT NAMED

Quote:

Ron Wilson has been fired as head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs after nearly four seasons behind the bench.

With another season slowly slipping away, general manager Brian Burke felt the need to remove Wilson of his duties; the move coming just a few months after Wilson was given a one-year contract extension in late December.

Wilson's replacement has not been named.

Chants of "Fire Wilson!" echoed through Air Canada Centre when the Maple Leafs fell 5-3 to the Florida Panthers on (Tuesday) Feb. 28. The game marked Wilson's 1,400th career NHL game coached, tying him with Pat Quinn for fourth on the all-time list.

Hired in 2008, Wilson was unable to guide the Maple Leafs to the playoffs during his tenure. They currently own the NHL's second-longest playoff drought at seven years.

Wilson recorded a 34-35-13 mark in his Maple Leafs debut, the club finishing 12th in the Eastern Conference. The following year, the team posted a 30-38-14 record and finished last in the Conference. Last season, Wilson had his first winning season with the Maple Leafs, going 37-34-11, which was good enough for 10th in the Conference.

Through 64 games this season, the Maple Leafs are 29-28-7 under Wilson.

Yeah figured. Bet you they go on a run and make things interesting in the playoff race. Often happens when a coaching change happens, at least initially.

I pay little attention to Leaf hockey (or hockey in general really) but was Wilson really to blame? Did Burke give him anything to work with?

Burke has been a failure.

LOL... so pretty much like BC then?

Amazing how the 2 teams mirror one another.

Wouldn't mind giving Eakins a shot for the rest of the season. He's got those Marlies playing pretty well.

Shadowfax for HC :dancing:

How has Burke been a failure? The ACC is filled above capacity at 4 times the price for every game he has been here. Much better record than...well...any NHL or NBA team.

I'd say he was the best GM in sports while he was here. Just ask his bosses.

Burke is good and this is his first HC hire
plus... he's more genuine than Bryan "the politician" Colangelo

+1 I would say bb/aa have been the best but I agree he's made some robberies without making a bad trade (phaneuf deal, lupul/gardiner deal, colbourne deal)

Lets be honest, Burke can sign everyone on this Raptors board and the ACC would still sell out at 4 times the price. It's the LEAFS. Burke's moves have little to do with it.

I guess JFJ was great as well.

Any other NHL, NBA team?

Raptorman 03-03-2012 10:22 AM

You guys have missed my point. I wasnt pimping Burke and his hockey moves, I am saying that any GM could put goldfish with Leaf jerseys on the ice and the ACC would still sell out.

Leaf fans that think MLSE is concerned with hockey are fooling themselves. The ACC is filled over capacity for every game...and ticket prices are 4 times anywhere else.

Get this into your skulls : THE TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS ARE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL FRANCHISE IN NORTH AMERICA!!

There is only one concern at MLSE...how much are you willing to pay for tickets. And right now the answer is "Whatever we charge".

Please dont waste your time with all this chatter of "We need a goalie" " We need a defensive coach" etc. People FIGHT to get into the games. Their is no problem to fix in Leaf land.

jeffb 03-03-2012 10:27 AM

Most successful in north America? Come on.

When evaluating a general manager it would make most sense to look at the teams regular season record and whether or not it transpired into playoff birth... since Burke has been here the Leafs have failed in this respect...
Attendance records are relevant, but if a team is not winning I am not sure how Burke would be responsible for a supposedly increasing attendance record.
Remember, winning or losing, this is a hockey-loving city. The ACC is packed and loud at every home Leaf game, regardless of whether or not the team is doing well.
