Default this proposed arena in markham

Is it at all a good idea?

I don't really know anything about it to be honset, but there seems to be so many questions.

Let's assume that it will be home to an NHL team....
What's the public transit situation like? I assume non existant.
How big is Markham even?
would the team call themselves the marham __________'s?

I have never been to markham, but i did a google image search and it looks like well nothing.

I get that the GTA could easily support another team, but is Markham really the best place? Hamilton or something in the west end makes a ton more sense to me...

i live 5 mins from markham... from what ive heard, within the next 10 years they are trying to get make a downtown area that will rival downtown toronto (in terms of thngs to do/eat/ etc).
i really dont give a crap, but sure, let them try.

Judging from the demographics, I'd say calling them the Dragons might work!

Well there lies the issue. If you build it, and they wanna come, will the leafs let them come?

The answer is no.

Markham is building a downtown area, by enterprise road and Warden Ave and it stretches further. People that live around here would know what I'm talking about. It looks like it'll be pretty cool by the time it is done but right now obviously it's all construction. Markham is growing at a pretty good rate and people typically make good money here so I think it would work.

from what i heard on the radio this morning the leafs won't have a say. The new markham team will have to pay them yearly for a while (i'm sure a lot of money), but the leafs won't have the power to prevent it if the NHL approves of a team relocating there.

Downtown Markham

Gives you some idea of what's going on, still kinda early in the process I guess

Yes, but the amount they would charge I believe is very high. If the right ownership came along and could handle that, than that would be great.

how do you build a new downtown? Downtowns are usually the historic roots of a city.

There is a little downtown on Markham rd and HWY 7 but it's just a strip. This new area would have retail, restaurants, entertainment etc. so I guess people would still consider it downtown.

Edit - personally I'm happy this is going on, I drive by the construction site semi-regularly and it looks like it'll be pretty cool. Since I moved up here it'll be nice to have a closer "downtown" to hit up.

Vaughan>Markham all day

the new team would have to pay the Leafs an upfront fee. I forgot the exact total but it was in the tens of millions. There was also a fee that Buffalo would collect if there was a team in Hamilton.

the cost is estimated to be $325 ml for the stadium. no way it will be that cheap. you can't build pro arenas for less that $500 mil these days.

just comes down to which city wants to fund an arena. people in Hamilton don't want to spend money on Copps Coliseum.

Vaughan, Markham, Mississauga... for every thing that they can claim is good about them.... the truth is that the best thing they have going for them is proximity to Toronto.

Markham is one of the faster growing communities in the GTA to be honest.
