They should have won big last night. If they didn't, there would have been a lot of cause for concern. The Swiss game tomorrow night will be an even stiffer test.

Great game by both goalies but how did the Swiss get so many good shots against us? Nash and Crosby have to pass, they dont work very well together. And thank god for the Shark line because they seem to be the only ones who can get things done.

Canada won. Actually kinda surprising. Isn't the Swiss the team that beat Canada in Torino? lol

In a nutshell, there's your proof that any one of 5 teams can win this tournament.

Should be interesting the rest of the way.

Isn't it always that way. That's why Canada only has 2 Olympic Gold medals ever.

Actually 7, but who's counting.

And we never sent our best like other countries did up until they allowed NHLers in 1998.

My bad i was wrong , 2 Gold medals in the last 58 years.

As far as us not sending our best? Aren't we the hockey country of the world? I mean it was always amateurs for everyone accross the board, no country could send NHLers? So considering we're supposed to be the best country at developing Hockey players don't you find two gold medals in nearly 60yrs the slightest bit disapointing. And since allowing NHLers, one Gold in 3 Olympics once not even medaling.

No.

Dude, the Russians, Czechs and Swedish sent their best who were on par with our NHLers and they absolutely dominated. We also didn't compete in any international events for most of the 70's.

As for being the best? I think it's fair to say the rest of the world caught up with us a long time ago.

didn't Russia lose yesterday?
and jeff, did you forget about the whole USSR thing that lasted 50 years and the fact that it was an amateur tournament most of the time? Russians sent pros and US and Canada sent amateurs, thats why the whole Miracle on Ice thing was a miracle

Yep, Russia lost to the Slovaks in a shootout. The competition in this tournament is tight. There are some favourites for the medals, but nothing is a lock. Even Sweden, the defending champs, had a tough time in their opening game. The Swedes beat Germany 2-0, but that game had some close calls. Germany could have stole that game. When it was 0-0, Germany hit the crossbar and two posts within a 4-5 minutes span.

Personally, I'm not too dissapointed with Canada's performance against the Swiss. Hiller, the Swiss goalie, played amazing. Canada outshot the Swiss something like 50-20, I think, so Canada was controlling the play. If Hiller hadn't played so well, and the Swiss didn't get such a lucky bounce on the second goal, the game could have easily been 5-1 for Canada. Brodeur looked sharp in the shootout; let's hope that carries over to the next game against the US.

Oh, and I find Jeff's ignorance about Canadian/international hockey history hillarious. In other threads he has mocked Americans for supposedly being "dumb" and supposedly not knowing their own history, or the specifics of the history of basketball. For example, one time Jeff claimed most Americans probably don't know that Naismith invented Basketball in Canada and brought it to the US. That, of course, wasn't even an accurate statement. Jeff was wrong. Naismith invented Basketball while working in the US. The other day, Jeff calls the people at NBC "morons" for making an honest technical mistake by confusing two similar names (Terry Fox and Michael J. Fox). In his post, Jeff, AGAIN, decided to generalize and say most Americans don't even know their own history. Hockey is pretty big part of Canada's history, yet Jeff clearly doesn't know every last detail. Hmmm....is Jeff a "moron"? By his own standards it would appear so. Sorry, Jeff, just busting your balls. But, seriously, you shit on Americans quite a bit, yet you don't seem to realize you're not exactly a walking encyclopedia, either.

2 Gold medals in nearly 60yrs is piss poor for a Hockey dominant country that prides itself on having the best players in the world. Anyway you slice it, it's disapointing. Now of course there are various reasons for this, but all i was pointing out was what little Olympic success we've had which is a fact.

People that say their disappointed with Canada's performance last night doesn't know shit.

The Swiss are very fundamentally sound and Hiller is an all-world goaltender. Give credit where it's due.

Prior to 1998, all of Canada's representative to the olympic games haven't been their best. It was basically compromised of journeymen playing overseas, much like the Spengler Cup. Meanwhile most other nations (Sweden, Russia) had guys playing in the various European leagues, and typically, not all of their best were playing in the NHL.

I wouldn't say it's disappointing at all. I'd say it's the rest of the world catching up to Canada.

EDIT: Pretty much what Acie said.

I kinda equate Canada's win yesterday to how Brazil wins in World Cup games. Everyone knows they're the team to beat, so teams go balls out to play against them. It's the 'championship' game. Yet, Brazil most of the time comes out with the win, ugly or pretty. Canada is the same here. Yes, it was an ugly win, yet they still win. You see how talented they are out there. I think people expect dominant wins. Well, then you're just silly.

I have to totally agree. I'd say in Olympic hockey its even worst though. All you get is 3 round robin games and its 1 game elimination from there. Talk about an unforgiving tournament

Come to think of it LOL World Cup is just as unforgiving
