So guys, I guess we also have a handful of puckheads here too, so I figured its only right to have a thread dedicated to hockey, eh.

So, Leafs choke again last night against the Canes and the Sens back on track winning their 6th straight.

Anyhow, what do you guys think of the Chris Simon dilemma? I think the league has to send a message to him and suspend him a minumum of 30 games at least, if not for the rest of the season. This guy's a fackin' nut job who clearly hasn't learned his lesson.

Oh, Simon's gone. He's finished. Even by the sounds of Charles Wang's (Isles owner) prepared statement, he's not coming back to the team. The guy's 36, so whenever he comes back, no one is going to take a flyer on a washed-up tough guy. There was a point in his career where he was good for 20 goals. That's no longer the case.

As for the Leafs choking, that's enevitable. Didn't Ponikarovsky have an empty net to shoot at and he coughed up the puck that lead to the game tying goal? I didn't see the game, so I don't know, that's just what I heard.

Nice to see King Lundqvist get his game back on track

Yup, and all I could do was have an evil chuckle.

Yeah, Lundqvist was great last night as has Kipper and the Flames winning all their 6 games on the road trip. I'm glad they turned that sinking around because I was getting concerned at the start of the season.

Yeah, I wouldn't be sad to see Simon gone, because what he did to Ruutuu was just idiotic and uncalled for.

BTW, anyone notice "Old Man" Gary Roberts beating up any player wanting to challenge him over the last couple weeks? I've seen highlights of at least 5 fights over the last couple weeks involving Roberts and he's tuned every one of his victims.

I think the instigator rule is the cause for all these suspensions, if the league would just let the players fight we would not have all these dirty questionable acts of violence. Im not defending Simon but it was Ruutu, and hes been known to drive people over the edge.

I think Simon might be schizo, people all over the league say he's one of the nicest person outside the rink, but then once he laces them up he becomes something or someone that noone can really understand.

So Leaf fans, what do you think of "Cheapshot" Downie's sucker punch on Blake Saturday night? Fuckin' brutal if you ask me. Fresh off his suspension for his dirty hit on McAmmond during the preseason when afterwards he was apparently so sorry for his actions and then he does something brutal like that punch on Blake. I'm praying that someone beats the living shit out him. Hopefully McGratten or Belak will get their mitts on him sooner or later.

I love Downie. He's such a shit disturber. And he can score. When he played in the O for Windsor, Peterborough and Kitchener, he was the same player. He played the exact same way when he played for the Juniors a couple of years ago. This is going to be his bread and butter. He's Sean Avery, v.2

He does what it takes to win.

How can bolting from the ice for a headshot and sucker-punching someone like the way he did against Blake be interpreted doing what it takes to win? Its pure stupidity and you can be tough and effective in so many other ways, but not like he plays.

But I will agree with you, he is Avery Part II. It's just a shame they're both Canadian. What a disgrace.

Well, if he's back on the ice later on, what would the Leafs be doing? Trying to get to him. All Downie would have to do is turtle when someone goes after him, and Boom! Flyers have a powerplay.

His antics are a bit too much right now, I will agree though. He needs to tone it doena a bit. But jeez, how nasty did Blake's eye get right away?

So what's this with McGrattan and Emery fighting at practice today?

Yeah, don't know forsure. All I read is that Emery got pissed at McGrattan because he bumped him in practive today and decided to take matters into his own hands. Apparently neither like one another and this is the 3rd time within the last couple months that these two fought in practice.

Personally, I like Emery but he's quickly becoming a big distraction for this team. Dude has a huge ego which everyone knows already and doesn't like being second fiddle to Gerber. Thing is, with Gerber struggling currently and Emery winning the last two games, its his position to lose right now. Time to shut up and show his worth to the team and league.

Maurice isn't the problem in Toronto. MLSE just gets their fingers into hockey operations when they shouldn't. They don't do it in basketball. The Leafs also have no defence and hang any goalie they have out to dry. If Cujo back in the day hadn't stood on his head, would those teams have gotten nearly as far as they did? Not a chance.

I can't believe Sundin still wants to play in Toronto. I mean seriously, who has this guy ever had to play with? Nobody. Imagine how many more points he could have if he had a serious linemate for a few seasons.

Funny story for you guys (got it second hand from my cousin, but I think it's true...either way, funny story). A long time ago, my cousin's friend was called up from the A to play his first NHL game against the Habs. He's lined up against Shane Corson on a faceoff (after a few rough plays) and tells Shane, "Look, Shane, we've gotta go. The only way I'm sticking with this team is for me to drop the gloves, show I'll protect my teammates." Shane says, "Sorry dude, I scrapped last night, I ain't going again." As they get set for the puck to drop, my cousin's friend says, "Shane, really dude." Shane says, "Sorry man." Puck is dropped, Shane jumps the guy, kicks his ass and the sucker's he's back down in the A right after the game. Out of hockey a few years later. I never liked Corson, but I hope that story's true.

So, Hoops what did you think of Bobby Clarke's comments yesterday? Agree or disagree with him?

Maybe its because I still resent that fucker after what he said about the late Roger Neilson and his battle with cancer before he passed away, but someone needs to physically shut him up.

That's a good story, Jay.

I never really liked Corson. I used to have friends who grew up with him in the Barrie area and said that he was a complete twat. Not to mention he slept with a couple of wives of some of the other players while he was in Toronto (at least rumours of it..)

As for the problem in Toronto, it's everything (aside from marketing). Paul Maurice was never really a good coach to begin with. In Carolina/Hartford, they had that one good year and that's because the team caught fire at the right time. Aside from that, his records were always hovering around .500 and missed the playoffs 5 of the 9 years he's been coaching in the NHL. Ferguson I think had made horrible personnel moves, but you can't really blame the guy because he's making moves to save his job, not necessarily for the long-term stability of the team. MLSE just needs to keep their noses out of everything (ie Peddie), and they need to start from scratch. Blow the whole thing up. Trying to re-tool is not going to help this franchise. They need to suck for 4-5 years (the fans will still come, no worries about that), rebuild the system and go from there.

I lost respect for the comments Clarke made about Neilson during his battle with cancer, that was classless, but in terms of what he said about Downie sucker punching Blake.. well, if Blake is going to chirp, he needs to face the consequences of his actions. Maybe this is a wake-up call for Blake as well. Dude earns 5 million a seson and he's doing nothing...and he plays with Sundin!

Fair enough ... I guess I can see his point, but my opinion of Clarke is bias because of the Neilson and McAmmond incidents.

Anyhow, speaking of Sundin ... any chance Leafs brass can convince him to waive his trade clause? I can appreciate his loyalty to the organization, but I think its time to part ways for the sake of this club's future. Would you guys agree?

MLSE would never deal Sundin. They're looking at it from a dollar and cents standpoint. If somehow the Leafs get on a bit of a roll and just squeak into the playoffs (a la the Islanders last year), MLSE will stand to make extra money. Without Sundin, that's not possible. That's why the Leafs will continue to suck. MLSE doesn't care about you as a fan and putting the best team on the ice. They just want to make money.

There was an article in the Star yesterday - 14 different hockey minds (ex players, broadcasters, journalists, etc). Each had to come up with a different team and the deal that they would make for Sundin. Some of the offers were really outlandish. I believe one was Sundin going to Pittsburgh for Jordan Staal and Angelo Esposito. Yeah, like that's happening. The other one was Sundin to Ottawa for Meszaros, Eaves and Vermette for Sundin. Like come on.. you think Sundin would be traded for THAT much?

Ugh .... remove Vermette and add in someone like Foligno and I'd do it. Meszaros frustrates me to no end even though offensively he's had a great season so far, but defensively he's turning into another McCabe.

Vermette like Fisher I hope is a Senator for life. That kid can flat our play not to mention one of the best penalty killers on all of the NHL.

But anyhow, I see your point on Mats, Hoops. I just honestly don't see this team getting any better anytime soon. Seriously .... they've plateaued for years now and at this current pace will continue too. Fine by me seeing how I'm a Sens fan, but its a shame that such historic franchise has to be absolute garbage. (Sorry Leaf fans)
