Huet traded? Interesting but I like the move. We weren't gonna keep him and might as well get a 2nd round pick in a deep draft.

He's a UFA .... Gainey has said that they have the money to sign a star long term, but I'm guessing that if they did deal for Hossa they would be signing him long term too.

The Sens on the other hand, would likely only be renting him seeing how financially we couldn't afford him this summer. So, we're banking on making another run for the Cup but as it stands right now with our goaltending situation we're not going to get too far.

Oh ya, nice deal of Huet to Washington. He'll do extremely well there and as CG just alluded too, this summer's draft is very deep so the Habs should get someone who will be pretty significant in another 3 to 4 years.

Other deal of somewhat importance:

* Lightning trade Brad Richards and goaltender Johan Holmqvist to the Dallas Stars for goalie Mike Smith, centre Jeff Halpern and winger Jussi Jokinen.
* Sharks acquire Brian Campbell from Buffalo for Steve Bernier and a first-round draft pick.
* Sens acquired winger Martin Lapointe from the Chicago Blackhawks for a 2008 sixth-round pick.
* The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded forward Wade Belak to the Florida Panthers for a 2008 fifth round pick.
* The Lightning have shipped Prospal to the Philadelphia Flyers for defensemen Alexandre Picard and a second or third round draft pick in 2009.

The deadline is still a couple hours away and Hossa still doesn't have a new home yet.

Another couple deals:

*Adam Foote dealt back the Colorado where he had his most success as a pro.
* The Columbus Blue Jackets have traded centre Sergei Fedorov to the Washington Capitals for blueline prospect Theo Ruth.

Wow, the Canadiens really are putting all their eggs in one basket this season. I think if they kept Huet, they would have had a real shot at representing the East this year in the Cup finals. Price is good, but to throw him to the wolves like this? I mean, he's preformed well under pressure in the WJHC and in the AHL, but this might be pushing it a bit.

What's with Colorado giving up a 1st for Adam Foote? Way too much if you ask me.
I'm not sure about that Ricahrds trade. The guy that should have went was St. Louis. I do like Joikenen..and Mike SMith will be a solid goaltender. The Loghtning got a steal when they shipped off Prospal for Picard and a draft selection.

The only trades my favorite team has made today. I thought the Jackets were going to be buyers but....

Both Fedorov and Foote were most likely gone after this year so don't mind the trades.

I guess it's over and done with, but i think Toronto would have been smart to trade Taskala to Ottawa for Ray Emery and a first round pick - assuming Ottawa would have been wit it.

I don't know what the Sens were thinking. I don't think they needed anymore grit, they needed a proven goaltender and perhaps an offensive defenseman. Wouldn't surprise me now if the Devils take the East.. again.

What was Washington thinking getting Huet but still retaining Kolzig?
What was Montreal thinking going into the post-season with 2 inexperienced goaltenders?
Love the deal that Dallas pulled off getting Richards.

Prediction:
Anaheim (or Dallas) v. New jersey in the finals

Your right Hoops, but with Neil'er gone for 6 weeks we did need some grit and Lapointe was a good pick-up. But we're fucked period. The Sens won't stand a chance without a premier goaltender.

I always wondered about the hiring of Paddock as the coach. You have a guy in Murray who led his team to the Cup finals only to be replaced by a guy who had marginal success as a coach in Winnipeg back in the day. Any speculation as to who will be the successor, Doc?

Murray himself for the remainder of this season at least which makes me really happy. Paddock's mind games with Emery and Gerber and lack of discipline has been horrible. I was upset when they made him head coach last summer, but I'm happy that he'll hopefully be gone in the next couple days.

Anyhow, here's my take on Ottawa's situation right now.

Our problems start between the pipes. We have two less than capable back-ups competing for the starting role. Emery has never been the same following surgery and Gerber is a sieve. So we have 2 sieves, 2 problems. When the goalie's let in bad goals, you can just see it deflate the entire team. Guys are giving up after being down a goal or two. That's where coaching comes into play. Paddock has lost the room completely. They are not playing any kind of defensive system... like what took them deep into the post season last year. They can't remove opposing players from in front of the net. They are taking bad penalties as a result of not working hard enough. Their penalty killing abilities have been horrible. Their pretty boy power-play... or perimeter attack is non-effective.... got to get pucks and bodies to the net. No offence. No scoring chances. No goals.

Things are looking bleak right now as we continue our move in the wrong direction of the eastern conference standings.

There is time to get this ship pointed in the right direction, however. A couple of big wins could give this team some confidence. We essentially have the same team as last year's post-season team... or at least same core players. We are less Comrie, Corvo and Preissing but have added Commodore, Stillman and Lapointe. On paper we should be doing better than this. I think Murray has done all that could be expected of him. I can't fault him for the new additions... again, on paper things look good.

Time will tell though.
