Very nice pick up by the bolts. Should fit in nicely with Lecalavier and St. Louis.

Report: Tanguay to be a Bolt

The St. Pete Times quoted Canada's RDS late Friday saying that the club has agreed to terms on an undisclosed contract pending Tanguay's passing a physical.

The 29-year-old posted 16 goals and 41 points in 50 games for the Canadiens a year ago, in his one and only season in Montreal.

Should all hurdles be cleared, Tanguay will be joining fellow Quebec natives Vinny Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis -- both of whom were targeted by the Habs last season in an attempt for the franchise to bolster its roster for a Stanley Cup run.

Over 659 career games with Colorado, Calgary and Montreal, Tanguay has compiled 193 goals and 580 points.

Lawyer: NHL afraid of Leafs

Quote:
They haven't said a word since billionaire Jim Balsillie announced his intention to put an NHL team down the highway in Hamilton, but the Toronto Maple Leafs are playing a huge role in the continuing -- seemingly endless -- saga of the bankrupt Phoenix Coyotes. Lawyers for Balsillie drew a road map to try to show that the reason the league's board of governor's voted 26-0 against him had nothing to do with business and everything to do with avoiding a legal showdown with the Maple Leafs.

Via TSN, Bob Mckenzie is reporting that the Maple Leafs have re-acquired its own 2010 2nd round draft pick from Chicago in exchange for its own 2011 3rd round pick and the 2011 2nd round pick recently acquired from Calgary as part of the Anton Stralman trade.

With this trade, the Maple Leafs now possess the necessary draft picks to tender an offer sheet to a restricted free agent, and Mckenize speculates that GM Brian Burke may choose to make a run at the still unsigned Boston sniper Phil Kessel. The Rangers’ centre Brandon Dubinsky and the Sabres’ winger Drew Stafford are the two other names that may interest the Maple Leafs.
Man i hope Burke could get this done, I'd rather give a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for Kessel rather then Kaberle and a first like the idiotic bruins GM wanted. Kessel isn't even 22 yet and he already has a 36 goal season under his belt, get er done Burke

Not surprisingly, Jim Balsillie and the NHL have found themselves at opposite ends of the financial spectrum.

While continuing to argue that Balsillie's claim to the Coyotes lacks any merit and that it wants to keep the team in Phoenix, the NHL finally has also set a sky-high pricetag on any transfer of the bankrupt franchise ranging from $101 million to $195 million (all figures U.S.).

Those figures are contained in the latest league filings to an Arizona bankruptcy court that is considering three bids for the Coyotes, including one from the league valued at $140 and another from BlackBerry baron Balsillie worth $212.5 million.

A week ago, Balsillie's PSE Sports and Entertainment filed a study conducted by eminent American economist Dr. Andrew Zimbalist that concluded a reasonable transfer fee would be $11.2 million to $12.9 million. Of that fee, a portion might be given as compensation to the Toronto Maple Leafs, suggested Zimbalist, who contended that the Leafs are not entitled to any direct indemnification.

The NHL had two appraisals done: Barrett Sports Group came up with the $101 million figure while Sports Value Consulting arrived at $195 million.

The NHL filing said "the methodology used by PSE's expert, Dr. Andrew Zimbalist, in calculating a relocation fee range of $11.2 million to $12.9 million does not pass muster" and adds, "the notion that a team in Hamilton would be worth only $11.2 million to $12.9 million more than a team in Phoenix is patently absurd."
Meanwhile, the league continued to assert its stance that the Leafs do not own a veto over the arrival of another team in their territory.

The league reiterated that it has the sole right to decide upon franchise transfers. "The commissioner has made clear, both before and during this matter, that he interprets the NHL constitution as requiring only a majority vote for all relocations, including any potential relocation to Southern Ontario."
ok, so i really hope the judge realizes this and moves the team to hamilton.

the nhl just openly admitted that a franchise in Hamilton is worth WAY MOre than a franchise in phoenix.

but, yet they fight to keep the team in a low market and refrain it from going into bigger markets.

in another article they also mention that they are backing up a bid by "ice edge holdings" that will play exhibition and like 5 games out of the regular season in saksatoon. while keeping them as the phoenix coyotes.

saskatoon has a population of 200,000 and they know that it is amore viable hockey market and can increase attendance and ticket sales compared to a population of 4 million in phoenix.

but, bettman and his henchmen are trying to buy the coyotes to keep them in phoenix. But, they are just saying that because there big plan is to move it to either kansas city or las vegas. which it will obviously lose them even more money.

he also never put up a fight of keeping the nordiques or jets.

even though balsillie may not get the coyotes in all of this. he has definitely proved how gary bettman is anti-canada. as well as how much of an idiot he is.

for the nhl's sake he needs to be fired. David stern's best move was firing this guy because if he didn't do something soon he would have overthrown him and then imagine what a mess the nba would be.

DOWN WITH BETTMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jonas Gustavsson’s unofficial debut performance is bound to generate some buzz after the Monster stopped 35 of 36 shots in backing the Maple Leafs’ prospects to a 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins’ youngsters in the opening game of the rookie tournament inside the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium this evening.

The Leafs’ kids gained a 1-0 edge late in the first frame as the collegiate trio of centre Tyler Bozak and wingers Viktor Stalberg and Christian Hanson combined on a 5-on-3 opportunity to beat Pens goaltender Patrick Killeen, with Stalberg finishing a right-post tap in off of a cross-crease feed from Bozak.

The Leafs would generate opportunity in only short spurts throughout much of the following two periods as Gustavsson looked unbeatable in upholding the Leafs’ slender lead, especially in some third period offensive onslaughts from the Pens. With under ten minutes remaining on the clock, the Pens would eventually strike off a tip-in from Joe Vitale that went through the wickets of a handcuffed Gustavsson.

The Leafs would respond quickly, however, after winger Greg Scott, signed out of Seattle of the WHL last off-season, broke in along the right flank and released a harmless looking wrister from the half boards that was fumbled by Killeen and allowed to trickle past the goalie line to give the Leafs’ prospects the deciding edge.

Alex Berry would then ice it with an empty netter after Joel Champagne found him with a pass that cleared the zone.
I'm not surprised by Gustavsson's performance because he's got more experience then most of these kids, I missed the game last night but it will be on leafstv at 5 if anyone is interested.

Any chance Gustavsson beats out Toskula for the starting job?

Kessel is a decent player, but Marc Savard made Kessel..setting him up and all.
Problem is, there's no one remotely close to Savard's talent level on the Leafs to play with Kessel..and if the Leafs miss the playoffs, that's a high draft selection going the Bruins' way.

Gustavsson just played one game against the Pitt rookies. Just one. Let's wait until December before we make a true asssessment. Gustavsson does have a shot at being the #1..I don't think it'll be until after 2010 though.

Burke Admits Interest In Kessel
9th September, 2009 - 1:40 pm
Globe And Mail - Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke admitted his interest in Phil Kessel on Tuesday.

Burke believes that Kessel, a restricted free-agent with the Bruins, is the perfect player for Toronto.

"I'm not sure what's going to happen next," Burke said the Globe and Mail.

"I think everyone knows we reacquired a draft pick. It puts us in a situation to affect the chain of events for certain players. It's sort of a day-to-day thing. I'm not sure what the next step is there. I think it's clear to everyone that we're trying to upgrade our forward group. And we'll see what happens."

The Rangers and Predators are also reportedly interested in Kessel, who the Bruins claim they haven't given up on.

However, Boston will have to move or demote a player in order to fit Kessel.
Can't wait to see what happens in the next few days

I thought Burke has all about building to the future. You know, trading for draft picks and all that. But now that he signed Komiserick and possibly Kessel, I think hes thinking playoffs.

Well, Burke has said that the goal of the team is to make the playoffs and be successful. But it was Ferguson's job to get rid of all the trash and now Burke isjust is putting his plan together: hardnosed defense, solid goalies, and the team desperately needs top 6 forwards atm because Kadri/Bozak/Stefanovich/Stalberg are still a few seasons away from taking over those spots, so when a talented player like Kessel is available, you go for him. Of course like Mango said you don't know how good Kessel can really be without Savard who spoon feed the guy for most of the season but imo you go for Kessel no matter what. Right now I'm not going to get all excited and say the leafs are going for the cup next season lol cause we are obviously a good 4 years off, but if kessel + another top line forward is added, it should be a very fun season to watch.

no trade is likely, basically if kessel is signed to an offer sheet by toronto (not sure money wise, maybe $4 mill/4.5, not sure about a salary for him tbh), if he does sign with the leafs they would have to give up a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick.
