Mike Babcock will be sworn in as the coach of the 2010 Canadian Olympic men’s hockey team in Montreal this week.

There has been speculation the 46-year-old Detroit Red Wings bench boss deserved to be chosen by Steve Yzerman, executive director of the Olympic team, because Babcock steered the Wings to their second Stanley Cup final in a row this season. In 2002-03, his rookie season as an NHL head coach, he led the Anaheim Ducks to the seventh game of the Stanley Cup final, which they lost to the New jersey Devils.

Hockey Canada and everyone involved has been tight-lipped about the appointment, but a source confirmed last night that Yzerman will announce Babcock as the coach most likely on Thursday in a press conference to take place a few blocks from Montreal’s McGill University, where Babcock played defence.

Maple Leafs Sign Gustavsson?
So I have been talking to Pierre McGuire and Steve Simmons this morning who have both told me the Leafs are expected to announce the signing of Jonas Gustavsson on or before the draft this weekend.

McGuire said that we are looking at a 3 year deal worth $950,000 a year +bonuses. But he wasn't a 100% because the Maple Leafs have a policy in which they don't state publicly what a player is making. He said if he had to put a time stamp on it Wed or Thursday are the days he would think are most likely to be announcement day.

Lets keep our fingers crossed
found this on a site called leafscrazyrumours.com lol but let's hope this is for real

So apparently the Bruins came forward with an offer of Phil Kessel for Tomas Kaberle and the #7 pick.

that's giving up waaaay to much. kaberle could go, but to give our our best defenceman and the #7 for a guy that probably isn't a major difference maker is not a good idea.

and i like kessel...

I like Kessel too.

I don't like Kaberle.

He would be a nice piece, no doubt..... but definitely not someone you'd forfeit your pick for in a strong draft.

Burke couldn't move up and get B.Scheen or Tavares but they did select a quality player in Nazem Kadri but I'm surprised they didn't select Cowen or MPS

Good for him, he looks like a nice player. But imo Brian Burke was an idiot for coming out and telling everyone he wanted the #1 pick. He really painted himself into a corner. He had alot of "hockey poeple" scratching their heads over that. Bonehead move.

I would've picked Jared Cowen. I think this was a need over BPA pick (with us already having Schenn on the blueline).

I love passing on MSP though. He's going to bust IMO

I hope this Kadri kid is a good pick

MONTREAL -- The second day of the NHL draft started off with another big trade Saturday, as the Calgary Flames acquired highly coveted defenseman Jay Bouwmeester from the Florida Panthers.

In exchange, the Flames send defenseman Jordan Leopold and a third-round pick (No. 67) in this year's draft.

Both Bouwmeester and Leopold are slated to become unrestricted free agents on July 1, giving the teams four days of exclusive negotiating rights.

The Flames will make a strong push to sign Bouwmeester, as it's believed the native of the Edmonton area wanted to return to western Canada.

Have you seen Kassian play?

Cowen is redundant when you have Schenn. Same type of D-man.

Kadri was the right pick. Highly skilled player. He's playing next year in London, but he'll be ready to make a contribution in 3 years.

sports media was telling me who to expect come draft day
thats why I was surprised Kadri was taken
not many mentioned him as a possibility

Kadri will probably stay with the knights for one more year and with Tavares gone, the team will be his and he should be stacking up the points ...he'll be a top line center in a few years, a great rebuilding piece.

Just saw on tsn that Montreal traded higgins and 3 prospects for Scott gomez and 2 minor leaguers ... Komisarek is testing FA...he'll probably be a leaf by the end of tomorrow

EDIT: Looks like Dany Heatley's been traded for Dustin Penner, Cogliano, and Smid

I can't stop laughing at TSN2 and their 5hr FA day coverage.

They have 5 guys in studio, 5 reporters on location accross various cities and are gonna have a 5hr show.....and if that's not enough they're gonna have a 1 hour wrap up at the end of the day. Wow! God i hate this country's obsession with Hockey. But still, this is too funny.

All they need now is a Monkey.....oh wait...

Leafs make their first signing:

Quote:
Colton Orr signs a 4-year deal with Toronto, $4 million deal in total.
Great signing for the leafs...will get them tougher for sure, Orr's a superheavyweight in the league and fought a lot for the rangers last season

I bet we'll get Chris Neil and/or Travis Moen by the end of the day...now that the Sedin Twins have resigned with the Canucks , let's hope Burke picks up Cammilairi (sp?) /Malholtra

After Brian Burke's big mouth these last few months, he hasn't done much at least not yet.
