Too bad the comissioner blows, half the teams aren't viable and they can't stop making rule changes from one season to the next in order to either "speed the game up" or pander to americans to try and make the game more appealing. Shit they've changed the offside rule alone 3 times in 10 years. From measuring the equipment, to adding the shootout, too looking at odd shaped nets to allow more scoring .....lol. The NHL is a joke.

It's pretty much a crapshoot of a draft, because they try to pick guys they don't think are going to play in the NHL. Hence Tavares not getting selected.

If it's like that then they should hold the KHL draft after the NHL draft to see the players that get drafted and the players that don't

TORONTO -- The queue to add a third NHL team in Ontario got a little more crowded Friday.

A new group has come forward with a proposal to launch a second NHL franchise in Toronto. They have a name -- the Toronto Legacy -- and even a sweater and logo.

What they don't have apparently is any official support from the league, which said Thursday it knew nothing about so-called Toronto Legacy Group.

Andrew Lopez, a communications specialist who has worked as a motivational speaker for Miss Universe Canada, from laying out a vision for a second Toronto team, suggesting that C$1 billion in private financing is already in place for the proposed expansion team.

The team would be known as the Toronto Legacy, and would play out of a proposed 30,000-seat arena built at Downsview Park, located in the north of the Greater Toronto Area. Lopez said the site would include a community athletic centre, 50-metre swimming pool, four outdoor rinks and public park space among other amenities.

"We're not sure how (the NHL) or the Toronto Maple Leafs will take this," said Lopez. "So we said, 'Let's just share with our city, share with our country, and once they've had a chance to look over what we're proposing ... by all means, if they consider us worthy, we would be privileged.'

"We're not here to force our will on anyone. A simple no from the National Hockey League would be OK. We realize it's a very special club."

When you have a league with a team called the Blue Jackets, my guess is anything goes.

Here are some of the choices Burke has on July 1st: I think its safe to say where not getting a 1st-3rd pick so looking at the possible list of burkes apparent choices, who to offer. (Cited from Toronto Star)

Jay Bouwmeester - Best defender available and maybe the best player;

Marian Hossa - One of the best forwards available, but will probably want to stay in Detroit

Marian Gaborik - Superstar would warrant big, long-term deal, but health status constantly a question mark

Mike Cammalleri - Good scorer and Toronto native will probably sign with the Leafs

The Sedins - would boost the offence, but introduce an enormous cap hit (~$13-14M?)

Francois Beauchemin - A key defender on the Ducks; Could be targeted by his ex-boss Burke if J-Bo signs elsewhere

Scott Niedermayer - Could be another good fallback if the Leafs can't land J-Bo

Mike Komisarek - Good tough as nails defender; Maybe Burke throws some cash at him

Petr Sykora - Would add good scoring depth, but I'm guessing he stays in Pittsburgh

Brian Gionta - A long shot at best to join the Leafs, but a good forward nonetheless

Mats Sundin - Has definitely lost a step or two; He wasn't bad for the Canucks, but has clearly declined the past 12 months

Alexei Kovalev - On the downside of his career, but could provide good secondary scoring somewhere, ie, if he takes a large pay cut

Erik Cole - After watching him closely this spring, he is nowhere near the player he used to be; injuries have taken their toll
Nik Antropov - After several injury-plagued seasons early on, he has settled in nicely to have a solid NHL career, but Burke will probably turn the page
Cammileri would be a sick addition and seems like a realistic one, seems like he wants a lot of money though...the Sedin twins would be amazing, even one Sedin would be great lol

Leafs hopeful `steal' will blossom
Stefanovich among trio of prospects signing deals with Toronto

Mark Zwolinski
Sports Reporter

Mikhail Stefanovich had what was considered a breakout year in the Quebec junior league last year, and it prompted insiders to claim the Leafs got a "steal" in the 2008 draft when they selected him in the fourth round.

Stefanovich must still prove he has the drive to advance to the NHL, but the Leafs are more than willing to find out, having signed the 6-foot-2, 202-pounder to an entry-level contract yesterday.

The 19-year-old Stefanovich was one of three signings announced by the Leafs, along with Carl Gunnarsson (sixth choice in 2007) and Juraj Mikus (fourth in 2007).

Stefanovich likely would have gone higher in 2008 – he was a projected first-rounder – but his work ethic and ability to handle the physical aspects of the game came into question.

The Leafs certainly noticed Stefanovich's potential, but it was Quebec Remparts head coach Patrick Roy who took the teenager on as a personal project, and turned his career around.

Roy, who has made a tremendous success of the Remparts program since taking over several years ago, sparked Stefanovich to a tremendous season last year in which he led the team in scoring (49 goals and 27 assists in 56 games).

That goal total ranked third in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and Stefanovich played as many as 12 fewer games than the league leaders. In 17 playoff games this year, he collected 11 goals and six assists, and went on to represent Belarus in the 2009 world championships.

Stefanovich brings excellent skating and an elevated hockey sense to the table, and according to scouts, he could make a perfect linemate for current Leaf and fellow Belarussian Mikhail Grabovski.

Stefanovich remains a long shot to earn a spot with the Leafs in training camp this fall. He may be returned to junior, but he could also play with the Marlies, and if all goes well, receive a callup during the NHL season.

The 22-year-old Gunnarsson is a 6-foot-2, 190-pound blueliner who played for Sweden in the world championships.

Mikus, a 20-year-old from Slovakia, is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound defender who played in the Slovakia Extraliga last season.
Seems like an interesting prospect with a lot of upside, let's hope he works out lol

I would like Cammalleri or Gionta

I heard that Burke doesn't want Jay b/c he's not worth the money he will get from another team

Anyone interested in Heatley? Apparently he's asked Bryan Murray for a trade.

I have a feeling LA and Edmonton will be in the mix for Heater. They have a boatload of prospects they can unload and both have cap space to absorb salary.

The Fourth Period :: Toronto Maple Leafs :: Leafs won't re-sign Joseph

Quote:
Curtis Joseph's tenure with the Maple Leafs has officially come to an end, as GM Brian Burke told the Toronto Sun that the team won't be re-signing the veteran goalie.

"Great service as a Leaf," Burke said. "But we are moving on."

The Leafs are trying to lure Swedish netminder Jonas Gustavsson, and even if he elects to sign elsewhere, the 42-year-old Joseph won't return.

According to the Sun, Joseph is expected to announce his retirement some time this summer.

With Vesa Toskala in the No.1 slot, Burke did not rule out the possibility of re-signing free agent goaltender Martin Gerber to remain on board as the club's backup.

Gerber, 34, was claimed off waivers by the Leafs on March 4.
It's been fun CUJO...but it makes sense if the Leafs are close to signing Gustavsson + they have Gerber

BTW looks like analysts on NHL.com can't agree on who's going first in this years draft...one says hedman, one says Tavares ...i remember hearing rumors that Tampa Bay was willing to trade their #2 pick for Scheen and Kaberle...would u do it? ...I mean with the 7th pick the Leafs could pick Jared Cowen to fill in the gap Scheen's left + u'd have Tavares

Guy, Cujo is washed up. He shouldn't have played last season. Gerber is a FA, so he's out of the mix, and there's a guy they call Toskala who's still under contract. Remember him?
