found this interesting article on Hockeybuzz...not really watching the playoffs, just waiting for the draft/offseason

Quote:
CHICAGO (May 23) — Having covered 16 playoff games in nine different cities so far this spring, the chatter with hockey people in press boxes is non-stop, and the speculation is all over the place heading into another busy off-season. Recently, however, I have been warned by several impressive sources not to underestimate Brian Burke’s resolve in pursuing the Swedish twins he drafted to the Vancouver Canucks almost 10 years ago. Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin can become unrestricted free agents on July 1st if the Canucks do not re-sign them, and hockey fans in British Columbia are justifiably anxious to see whether or not their team can afford its two best offensive players. If the twins are on the market when the free agent sweepstakes begin, Burke is likely to be front and center on behalf of the Maple Leafs.

“He has to go after them,” one of hockey’s most recognizable faces told me Friday at the United Center, prior to Chicago’s overtime victory against Detroit in Game 3 of the Western Conference final. “The Leafs are one of the few teams that will have the money this summer to accommodate the Sedins and Burke is being smart by talking about making the playoffs next year. This is the type of big-time move he has to make.”

The conversation occurred one night after a hockey executive in Pittsburgh told me Burke is “salivating” over the chance to bring the offensive spark of the Sedins to Toronto. Of course, tampering regulations preclude NHL employees from speaking on the record about players still under contract, and Burke obviously cannot comment on his free agent strategy. The Sedins will probably fetch somewhere between 10 and 13-million dollars on the open market, and that’s a lot of cash for a team that has missed the playoffs four consecutive seasons. But, Daniel and Henrik are in the prime of their careers, and are still young enough to be the center-piece of an improving Toronto club in the next half-decade.

The pre-game discussion here in Chicago also touched on veteran goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who lost his starting role to Jonas Hiller during Anaheim’s playoff push this spring. “Burke might take a look at him,” I was told. “Bringing in a proven goalie is a lot different than going after a prospect from Sweden” — the latter reference, of course, pertaining to free agent netminder Jonas Gustavsson of Swedish Elite team Farjestad, who several teams, including the Maple Leafs, have recently pursued.

Giguere was Burke’s No. 1 man during Anaheim’s Stanley Cup triumph in 2007, and he probably still has a few good seasons left in him. Burke gave Giguere a no-trade clause with the Ducks because one of the goalie’s kids needed specialized medical care in southern California. But, there’s a world renowned children’s hospital in downtown Toronto, and Giguere might be willing to waive his contract privilege to re-join his former boss, who has a noted soft spot for players that have successfully gone to war for him in the NHL.

Nice job Oilers ... adding Quinn as the head coach and Renney as the associate head coach.

I love Pat Quinn.

Maurice isn't doing too badly for himself either.

Just saw a breaking news story on CityTV that Peter Zezel has been taken off life support. Wow! This seems so sudden.

Peter Zezel passes away | Sports | Toronto Sun

It's just awful. He was on Off The Record, like, last week?

Jim Balsillie is a dick imo. This is a guy who constantly puts the cart before the horse, pre-selling tickets, placing a plan on renovating Copps before he even gets a sniff at the Coyotes and constantly alienating that little moron Bettman. He lost his chance at Pittsburgh/Nashville and i really hope this is strike 3. I'm so tired of hearing about this!

It's to make Bettman look like an idiot if he turns him down
He pre-sells tickets to show there's a fan base
he gets sponsors to show that corporate money will come in
and he has a plan to renovate Copps to show he has an NHL quality facility

this isn't any different than when an expansion team comes into any league
you always have to have Corporations, fans and an arena plan before you can think about getting a team

Its just the Canadian hockey media publishing stories every day which makes this a tiring event

I just think it makes him look arrogant and over confident. He has to get Phoenix which should be his first priority. Not already acting like a team is going to Hamilton. As for making Bettman look like an idiot, everyone knows he's an idiot, but Balsillie isn't much better and alienating Bettman isn't the way to go about getting what you want. He put the cart before the horse before and lost. He needed to just put a bid in and say he'd consider keeping them in Phoenix but if thngs didn't change, then he would look to "possibly move them". Everyone knows Phoenix will never work and then Baslillie can make his case for Hamilton (ie: ticket sales, building reno etc...). For a so called smart business man i find him stupid in this case.

If he agrees to their rules, then he needs to get the Board of Governors to agree to a relo..... which is not gonna happen.

And like you say, everyone knows that PHX isn't working out.... so why should he have to take a $30-40M loss while he waits for them to say no? Bullshit.

He needed to force the issue. The way he is doing it now is the only way it could work while Bettman is around. Of course it's a gamble and the odds are against him.... but every Canadian should be applauding him for trying.

He's forced the issue twice before, saying he'd buy Nashville/Pittsburgh in order to move them to hamilton. It never worked, why... because he was going around trying to sell tickets in Hamilton before he even got a team. He just needs to get Phoenix and deal with relocation once he has control. JMO

Jeff, that's what you're supposed to do. You're supposed to demonstrate that the market could support it. He was doing his due diligence.

The problem is that the commissioner is to naieve to admit to his mistakes of the past. Ballsillie would be a great owner for this league. That discussion he had yesterday was bullcrap. He has, I'd argue about 4-8 teams that are probably in terrible financial situations, yet he outright says he's not affected by the recession, no teams are in trouble etc. Ball. is calling him out on it essentially and saying, guess what, you want a healthy league, here's a healthy market that makes sense.

Again, he's doing alot of this to show that, yes it's a credible market, yes he's serious about buying a team, yes he wants to fix the arena to make it NHL calibre, make the city an NHL calibre team all in time for 2010 which is only a year away. So he's trying to make a 3-4 year process into a 1 year process.
