Dude, you couldn't be more wrong. The reason why Burke is signing all these guys is because the Leafs literally have no prospects, hardly any decent young players coming through the pipeline. Not all of these college kids are gonna stick in the NHL, but if 1 or 2 do - and become a top 6-forward, then it's worth it. It's like acquiring a 2nd or 3rd round pick for nothing.

sort of ment that he's signing prospects b/c he's going to have to give some up if he wants Tavares
He doesn't want to be left with a depleted farm system

Shit, I've been calling hedman, stedman, hahahah.....and Burke is aquiring these prospects because well, the Leafs HAVE no prospects. They're likely not going to be traded as well. Teams for whatever reason, in trades will usually take a guy who's played junior hockey over college hockey. So, those are the more "sexy" players.

You think he's gonna give up 8 prospects? Chances are, if anything, he'll have to give up 1, 2 at the very most. If that at all. In all liklihood, they give away someone on the current roster (combination of Kaberle, Kubina, Grabovski, Stempniak), their own draft selection and cash. Lots and lots of cash.

By doing so, they can be more active players in the FA market

ha. i was telling my friend at work that if Burke actually manages to obtain the first or even second pick in the draft, i will force myself to become a full-fledged leafs fan. Hell i'll even buy one of those new reebok Leaf Jerseys.

And it won't even be that many. How can you give up prospects when you really don't have any to begin with?

I think that if the Isles choose Hedman, The Leafs are gonna make a hard charge to get that #2. I don't think that Toronto is the right situation for Tavares though. Going into that pressure cooker doesn't bode well for the kid. He would be better off going to a place like Colorado - that place is still hockey crazy, but it isn't a media frezy like Toronto.
Yeah, I have the same bad feeling about Tavares that I had about Crosby.

My dream scenario is for Burke to trade up and get Duchene without giving up our #7.... I'm not a big believer in mortgaging everything for one player.... and it will take a lot less in terms of a package to get Duchene. It's too bad LA wasn't at #3 instead of COL, because I think they already have enough youth and are looking to add a vet or two rather than get more prospects.

But maybe we can still work a deal with LA to move up and lock in Brayden Schenn. I really like the idea of having both Schenns on the team.

I don't think the Leafs would have to move up to get Braden Schenn. I think he's slotted at #7 by the CSB. Apparently, the Islanders AND Lightning have both stated that it would take Luke Schenn to get the #1 or #2

NHL.com - News: Rangers sign college standout Matt Gilroy - 04/17/2009

Rangers sign college standout Matt Gilroy
Friday, 04.17.2009 / 4:34 PM / News
New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with 2009 Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner Matt Gilroy.

Gilroy, 24, captured the Hobey Baker Award, given to the top player in collegiate hockey, and was named as a First Team All-American on April 10. He became the second player in Boston University history to win the Hobey Baker Award, as Rangers’ Captain Chris Drury won the award in 1998. He is also the first defenseman in Hockey East history to be honored as a First Team All-Star three times.

Captain of the Hockey East regular season and playoff champion Boston University Terriers, Gilroy registered eight goals and 29 assists for 37 points in 45 games this season. He led the Terriers to their fifth NCAA championship, assisting on the game-tying goal with 17 seconds remaining in regulation in the championship game on April 11, after entering the tournament as the #1 seeded team.

Why are people still pissed at Mats Sundin? I don't get it.

Secondly, good bye Canadiens. It was fun while it lasted. Now, to 2010 and FINALLY add some scoring punch.

I actually like Hedman more than Tavares. Tavares isn't a good enough skater to be an MVP type IMO. He reminds me more of Heatley. His biggest strength will be finding spots and knowing where to be and scoring and will be one of the league's best powerplay players, but won't really be able to carry you in terms of playmaking and creating oppurtunites for others. Which is fine and all, Heatley's a great player. I suppose if he reached his peak he could be like Brett Hull, who mind you only hit superstar mode when he had Oates feeding him, which is probably what Tavares will need to really max his potential. He'd probably be the perfect wingman for Crosby actually. (granted he plays center now - but probably fits the wing more)

But if given the choice, I'd prefer the potential franchise dman in Hedman... for his size (6'7!) he can sure move, explaining the Lidstrom or Pronger/Chara comparisons. But I usually side with defensive players in sports... which is why I'm really happy we got Schenn! I like Brayden Schenn too, apparantley he's built in the Mike Richards mold of all-around toughness and intangibles on the ice... I like that

How anyone was pissed off at Matts to begin with makes absolutely no sense at all. He owed the leafs franchise nothing, period

I never understood his logic about not wanting to allow a trade that would have brought us some nice pieces.... it would have put our rebuilding that much farther ahead.

But I'm no more pissed at him for that than I am at Kaberle for nixing the deal that would have landed us Jeff Carter..... which is to say not at all.
