I was watching sn today to see some ball highlights, but as usual you have to sit through hours of hockey talk to get there

the one guy pointed out that the two teams from the west made the playoffs, sure DET but CBJ shows how pathetic the east is compared

*not tryin to knock CBJ just the conference

Brendan Shanahan is the new President of Hockey Ops for the Leafs.

No prior experience. Seems like a Leafs thing to do.

actually the leaf thing to do would have been to get some vice president of hockey ops from some team doing it old boys club style. Shanahan is an oddly progressive decision which sits pretty well with me.

Although it all means little at this point unless he brings in an actual GM who is able to bring success. I have been saying it since the offseason. Nonis is shite and nowhere near the quality of GM this team is desperate for.

following in Vancouver's footsteps with their hiring of Trevor Linden...went for a well known name/face

baffling decision if you ask me...Shanahan has never made a trade, drafted etc etc...and the move essentially makes Nonis an assistant GM

he's not going to making trades or drafting. He's not going to be the GM. He's supposed to be the GM's boss.

Yeah it's pretty stupid if you ask me. Dude has no experience whatsoever and now he's calling the shots. I dunno, it just doesn't makes sense to me. As a leafs fan I hope he does help this team turn around though.

Fancy -- Nonis is not a good GM. Totally agree. I guess a good thing is that Shanahan won't let Nonis hand out 7 year contracts to 3rd line grinders.

Yeah but he still has final say on trades and signings. He can veto any of Nonis's decisions even though he has less experience than him. (Although this is probably a good thing since Nonis is not a good GM)

exactly. i kind of see his job as the guy who approves or disapproves certain player moves much like the infamous "MLSE board" used to do. I would think he would make some better calls than certain ones that have down recently.

ALso one would think that with this hiring he'll bring in his guy as a GM and that it will be someone with a better vision (and a more creative way of implementing said vision) than an old vancouver canuck reject.

Huh?

However, it’s believed Shanahan will have an even more senior role that will extend beyond over-seeing general manager Dave Nonis and the hockey department. Being named president, as opposed to president of hockey operations, would mean he would be involved in other business and league matters, such as the upcoming 100th anniversary of the Leafs.

He may even be groomed to become the heir apparent to Leiweke as CEO of the entire MLSE sports conglomerate.
Brendan Shanahan to be named president of Maple Leafs: Cox | Toronto Star

^
all final decisions go thru him...and he has no experience whatsoever...so ya, he is responsible for all trades drafts etc etc
imho, they would have been much better off going for someone like Hextall

speaking of Hextall...hire him as the new GM...now that would get my full support

Yeah you kinda changed my opinion on this one, nothing else to do but wait and see. Still skeptical though, but I guess all Leafs fan should be.

So he's gonna run the business side of things to? Now that one is odd, for all I care he can fuck up MLSE's finances though lol

^I've been watching that too. Right now were in the top 10 of worst teams (9). If we drop our last game against OTT that pretty much guarantees a bottom 10 finish especially since alot other teams have one more game at hand.

Playoff match ups are great this year. Not a single one that is predictable.

As a Blues fan, I'm pretty pissed though. Arguably the best team in hockey for nearly six months and one sputter at the end, combined with a flurry of injuries, probably spells the end for us in the first round if we can't get our shit together.

Really? Because I'm pretty sure there isn't a team in the East that has a chance against Boston.
Pitts, maybe, but still a pretty long shot.

Detroit is a brutal first draw for the Bruins. Very good team, veterans galore.

Even then, Montreal will give them a run for their money.

They are my backup favourite team. They have a cannon in the arena. What else needs to be said?
