thanks. well that's a pretty high pick which indicates he had/has some talent. who knows. I'd love for us to have a rookie who makes some noise.

from what i know (which isn't a lot) the kid has always had skills and above average speed...but he's always been shy
this year he seems to have brought a little "nasty" to the party...and has continually gone to the dirty areas to finish plays

imho, that's been the difference for him

Kessel gets 3 games...done for pre-season

FRANSON AGREES TO ONE-YEAR, $2 MILLION DEAL WITH MAPLE LEAFS

Quote:
The Toronto Maple Leafs have agreed to terms with restricted free-agent defenceman Cody Franson to a one-year, $2 million contract.

Franson has spent the last two seasons of his four-year NHL career with the Leafs, after being acquired in a trade with the Nashville Predators.

In 45 games last season, Franson scored four goals and a career high 25 assists, with a plus-8 rating.

The Salmon Arm, BC native also appeared in all seven playoff games the Leafs played last year and had six points, including three goals in the first round defeat to the Boston Bruins.

The 26-year-old defenceman was drafted in the third round, 79th overall of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft by the Predators. He made his debut during the 2009-10 season and spent the first two years of his career in Nashville.
Last season, Franson made $1.2 million on a one-year deal he signed with the Maple Leafs.

does this mean they send Liles down after he clears waivers ?
i've heard they gain an extra 900,000 if they do so (not sure if that's true/correct)

no idea shadow, but this is yet another reason why i don't think this offseason has been anything great. Marginal increase in talent and you're up to your eyeballs in cap hell. GOOD JOB DAVE!

I think it fits without sending Liles anywhere. We're just really tight on money if there is an early injury. This year is tough fitting guys under the cap, that's why guys like Mason Raymond had to settle for a tryout before getting a contract. The cap will go up next year though and should provide some relief.

ok
i'm just confused cause i've heard conflicting stories i guess
i thought the Clarkson suspension made their cap situation even worse so i was surprised at the timing of this signing

So Nonis caved, can't blame him. Franson's needed for the pp, he always seems to get pucks through in a hurry from the point. But for someone who's 6'4" and 215lbs he needs to step it up in his own end, way too inconsistent at manning bodies in front and tries to make too many long passes that lead to loss of possession/icings, all this while playing sheltered minutes.

Gunnarson - Phaneuf
Gardiner - Franson
Ranger - Reilly(to start the season)

Fraser, Liles

offense everywhere, looks good.

thanks trane ^
makes a bit of sense to me now ...looks like Nonis is going to have to pull a few strings during the next few days

my prediction is that Liles is put on waivers...clears...then sent down to the Marlies
Holzer is sent down as well
Reilly sticks till Oct 24th...is then sent back to Junior for the rest of the year

Gunnarson (still not sold on him) - Phaneuf
Gardiner - Franson
Ranger - Fraser

Brennan is a 7th ?

and with the Reimer/Bernier combo, i gotta say that's a pretty solid back end

caught the 1st period last night...really good back and forth hockey
sounds like the #1 powerplay in the league eventually spanked the Leafs

loving the fact that the Red Wings are back in TO's division...should make for some great hockey

edit - thought i heard the announcers say Detroit had the #1 powerplay last year...checked and they were ranked 15th (right behind the Buds)
my bad

Leafs got spanked, it's just pre season though. Clarkson has not impressed me one bit tbh, but I'll reserve judgment until the regular season.

We dealt Colborne to the Flames. Not to surprising, he was shit in pre-season and we would've lost him to waivers 'cause he can't make the big club. I guess Burkie wanted him.

Very disappointed with his preseason...no wow moments whatsoever...he didn't even stand out against what was essentially an AHL lineup last night (Detroit)

Nonis had no choice...a fourth rounder is better than nothing...TSN is saying there are some undisclosed conditions on the trade that could bump the pick to a third round

I thought Colborne was very good last night.

Nonis didn't really have much choice, but this could be a deal we look at and shake our heads down the road.
