He went to my high school. Everyone always joked that their egos had to sit outside in the hallway when he was working out in the gym...

Ilya Kovalchuk retired from the NHL. Only 30 years old and still an elite player. He wants to go back to Russia, he'll probably play in the KHL.

But they needed him. Elias is 37. Even Zubrus is 35. Exit Brodeur and Clarkson.

He should have announced that earlier so they could at least be players in free agency. They should trade Elias to a contender and tank.

The NHL is reasonable imo. But with a hard cap and 25 man rosters they don't have much choice.

I would have loved to have been at the meeting where they decided that "Metropolitan" should be one of the Division names.

Leafs signed Paul Ranger. This guy was a top 2 Dman for Tampa before he left the NHL for 3 years. Great outlet pass, mobile and steady. Hopefully he can revive his game. He was very solid with the Marlies last year. 1 year for 1 mil, could be a huge bargain.

Nonis still needs to sign Franson and Kadri with limited cap space. We need to trade JM Liles.

Ya I had really high expectations for Liles... He didn't live up at all

Ranger is solid, not great, not bad, I'd say somewhere around above average. That is if he plays like he did before, as you said.

wtf?

Nonis gets 5 year extension.

I just threw up and It's official Lim Liewike doesn't know what he's doing.

Ranger is a sleeper imho...VERY solid with the Marlies...smart/cheap addition to the Leafs
I got a gut feeling Nonis is setting up some kind of deal that'll involve a couple of his D

I like Nonis...he's made a couple of nice moves so far...but 5 years is too much imho...i would have given him 3 with a team optional fourth

like blowing a ton of cap space and not signing Kadri and Franson (which he don't have the cap space for)?

Honestly how are these two not signed yet? I get the feeling Franson is going to be the odd man out (which is a big mistake). Not signing Kadri is flat out unnacceptable.

but hey no biggie, Give the GM a 5 year extension.

Seems he's lining up his smaller fish in order to sign a couple of his bigger ones

Let's wait and see what happens

Kadri is a lock to get signed, Franson not so much. If we have to trade him I'll be pretty pissed tbh. He better have some sort of plan.

Nonis bought out Komisarek who has one year left with our last compliance buyout. If we bought out Liles (regular buyout) he would be on the cap for 6 years. So he should've bought out Liles with the compliance and used a regular buyout on Komisarek (he would be on the cap for only 2 years). This is assuming Nonis is an idiot though. We'll see.

i think he sees liles as more tradeable - which he is compared to Komisarek. I'd love to see us unload Liles, but i won't get my hopes up on the returns.
