I don't want to give the impression I'm a Leaf fan. I'm not, so I don't mind if they go ahead and hamstring themselves with Luongo's contract. But my 1st thought was LeCavelier's crap contract running through 2018 in exchange.

Tampa may have had the worst GAA in the league and LeCavelier in no longer vital there. But could Vancouver use a 6'4" 32 year old centre who has already led a team to the stanley cup?

not sure if Vancouver wants to take back an extra $2.4 million in cap on that deal...guess it's possible

i'd trade Phaneuf for Lou in a heartbeat

Phaneuf will make $6,500,000 in 12/13 with a cap hit of $6,500,000...and $5,500,000 in 13/14 with a cap hit of $6,500,000
UFA in 15

still say he goes to Tampa though (i think is wife is from that area)

I hope they don't trade Luongo to Tampa. That would suck for the Jets.

I'd like to see the Oilers offer a package for him. Maybe send Hemsky's bloated BUT SHORT contract + Ganger + future pick or something like that.

1) Just to clarify a few things, the cap hit is $5.33 annually, real contract 6.7 for the near future, which doesn't really matter to a team like Toronto. There is also a team opt out clause after year 8 I believe, which makes it after the next 6 seasons.

2) There is no chance anyone, especially Vancouver, takes Lecavelier in a trade. He's even more underperforming, even worse contract, and plays a position that Vancouver already dealt with a log jam at (see Cody Hodgson trade).

CANADIENS HIRE BERGEVIN AS NEW GENERAL MANAGER

link

Quote:
The Montreal Canadiens will hold a news conference at 2pm et/11am pt to introduce Marc Bergevin as their new general manager.

You can watch it live on TSN and TSN.ca and listen in on TSN Radio 990 at TSN.ca/Montreal.

The story was first reported by the Chiago Tribune late Tuesday night.

Bergevin most recently worked as the assistant general manager of the Chicago Blackhawks under Stan Bowman.

The 46-year-old Montreal native will replace Pierre Gauthier, who was fired in late March.

After his retirement as a player in 2004, Bergevin became a pro scout with the Blackhawks before serving as an assistant coach with Joel Quenneville. He was director of player personnel when the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup in 2010 and was promoted to assistant general manager last June.

He was drafted by the Blackhawks 59th overall in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. During his 20-year NHL career, Bergevin totaled 36 goals, 181 points and 1,090 penalty minutes in 1,191 NHL games.

The Canadiens - led by a four-person committee including owner/team president Geoff Molson and advisor Serge Savard - conducted an extensive search for a new GM after Gauthier's dismissal on Mar. 29.

Several candidates were contacted for the position, including former Colorado Avalanche GM Francois Giguere, Toronto Maple Leafs assistant GM Claude Loiselle, Jim Nill of the Detroit Red Wings, Minnesota Wild director of player personnel Blair Mackasey, former NHL on TSN analyst Pierre McGuire and Tampa Bay Lightning assistant GM Julien BriseBois.

No. Now that's impressive. I chose them because they have Carter and Richards back together, who where for a while probably Philly's best and have been through playoff wars already. added to LA's core, and then with probably the best goalie in the league? Yeah, like they're really an 8th seed team.

Added bonus, love the simple uniform scheme

i find it very odd that the Leafs (and the League) are allowing this to happen before this year's draft
and btw...congrats to all the Habs fans out there...Dudley is a great pick-up for your organization

DUDLEY EXPECTED TO JOIN CANADIENS AS ASSISTANT GM

Quote:
Rick Dudley is expected to become the next assistant general manager of the Montreal Canadiens. However, the move from Toronto to Montreal is complicated.

Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke and newly appointed Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin are in discussions over Dudley's jump from one team to the other.

Dudley, a member of Toronto's management team, has an "out" in his contract with the Leafs, but has done extensive work for Toronto on the upcoming NHL Draft and sources say Burke would prefer Dudley not join the Canadiens until after the Draft.

Compounding the issue is the fact Toronto and Montreal both have top five picks (Canadiens at third overall, Leafs fifth), an obvious concern for the Maple Leafs, who would rather not share Dudley's expertise with the rival Habs.

The NHL no longer allows teams to seek compensation when coaches or executives are lured to other teams. However, Burke and other concerned general managers will push for restrictive procedures to be reintroduced in the near future.

Burke stacked his drawer with all these guys thinking he can fire one of them after this year is over. Now he figures he can't why not let em go.
