pretty good realignment. teams are close to each other or in the same time zone. kept the rivalries in tact too.
Looks like a good amount of hate in each conference. But do we know yet if it will just be the top 4 in each conference to get a playoff spot?

Teams will play home-and-home series against all nonconference teams and five or six games in their conference. The top four teams in each conference will make the playoffs, with the first two rounds consisting of solely intraconference matchups. Bettman said he will consult with general managers in the spring before deciding whether to reseed the playoffs in the third round or to have pre-determined matchups.

You guys catch Dion Phabeuf's hit yesterday? WHAM!

Also nice to see that thing the Maple Leafs did with the players' dad yesterday and in Boston. At least yesterday the old men got something to celebrate. Good win. Thanks in large part to Jonas Gustavsson. He has been solid this season. With these showings, he should play more regularily than a typical backup.

that hit was a thing of beauty !!...Schenn leveled a guy later on as well

the Kessel line was flying last night...and ya, a lot of credit should go to the Monster...another very solid game from him
and i'll say it again...why is Dupuis still in this line-up ??

bring on the Devils

LOL. At least with Dupuis you can put him on the ice in certain situations and he looks like an NHLer. Dupuis to you is like Rosehill to me. THAT guy does dick all other than fight and look clumsy when not fighting.

agreed...both Rosehill and Orr are useless...only reason they are getting any icetime is because of Brown's surgery

love Mike Brown's game !

if i agree with don cherry on one thing it is that the pads that nhl'ers wear these days have become weapons. all the hard plastic and crap on shoulders and elbows is totally unnecessary and leads to injuries. that wasn't a head shot at all - it was a clean hit - and i'll bet that dude suffered a small brain injury on that play.

i miss the old days when you had to pay a bit of a price for nailing a guy that hard because it hurt you as well. it's too easy to destroy a guy now without suffering any pain yourself. this doesn't sit well with me. i think the game is better when you have to consider whether or not it is worth it to lay a bodycheck like that.

And the Jets do what the Leafs can't. That's how you beat the Bruins, guys.

And how is that? By catching them on the second night of back-to-back road games (their third game in four days) with their leading scorer out and by having your goalie play out of his mind.

they did look terrible in that first. Still managed to get a nice point out of it though. What the hell was that crap by Gunnarson in the OT? totally missing that shot like that anf thus creating the giveaway that NJ scored on. Gargbage.

Kessel looked really good yesterday. That save Brodeur made on him on that breakaway was amazing. vintage.

Hey i got a question for you puckheads with better memory than me. You know how with the new realignment, teams will now only compete with the other 7 or 8 in their 'conference' for playoffs entry right? Well under the old system back in the 80s with the Norris and PAtrick divisions and that, what was the playoff qualification process?

getting too old to even remember what i did last week fancy...but i looked around...came up with this...

197980 NHL season

Quote:
With the league expansion from 17 to 21 teams, the playoffs were also expanded, from a 12-team tournament to a 16-team tournament. The sixteen teams were composed of the four divisional champions plus the top 12 finishers of the remaining 17 teams. The 16 qualifying teams were then seeded based on regular season points, with divisional rankings ignored. Division leaders no longer received first round byes. The teams were seeded 1 through 16, with the top team playing the 16th team in the first round, and so on. In subsequent rounds, matchups were similarly arranged, with the top remaining seed against the lowest remaining seed, and so on. The Preliminary Round was a best-of-five set.

oh. i thought for some reason this new playoff format was similar to what they did back in the Ziegler days, but i guess not. this new one is very outside of the box.
