They haven't done much to improve funk. Traded for Visnovsky from LA for Stoll and Greene and dealt Pitakanen to Carolina for Erik Cole. Oh ya, hey signed Horcoff to a 6 year deal too. That's about it.

SUNDIN MAKES HIS DECISION TOMORROW!!!

This is huge for Leaf fans. There's no odds or anything. Except for the fact that it's pretty much between Canucks and Leafs. I really hope he gives TO another chance. I mean, he LOVES that city. Just one more year is all I ask.

Sorry, but I don't care. The man would be stupid to stay in Toronto. I can appreciate loyalty, but all in all its all about winning the Stanley Cup. Something that Toronto won't see for some time still.

On a more important note, the Sens were able lock up Vermette for another 2 seasons.

I agree that it would be stupid to see Sundin in Toronto. Moreso because he was part of the culture there that DID NOT win a Stanley Cup. If they resign him all their efforts to change the culture this off season disappear almost immediately. You eventually have to move on. Sundin would place that team right back in medicority, but what they really need is to be a bad team and collect assets.

THN.com Top 10: Reasons why Mats Sundin isn't a Hall of Famer

by Brian Costello

31/07/2008 11:00:01 AM

Sundin is a consistent player, but here's why he isn't a Hall of Famer.

Some media outlets have referred to the indecisive Mats Sundin as an automatic Hall of Famer, regardless of what he decides to do with his hockey career.

So while Sundin dithers on what to do next season, here are 10 reasons why he won't make the Hall of Fame three years after his retirement. There might be 20 reasons why he will make the Hall some day, but some members of the selection committee will reject him for these flaws:

10. Has never led his team to great heights.

9. Has just 16 more points (1,321) than games played (1,305) during his 17-season career. Very good, but not great.

8. He never posted a 50-goal season and had just one 100-point season. Pavel Bure had two 60-goal seasons and two more with 58 and 59 and he's an outsider.

7. His 1,321 career regular season points are impressive, but not good enough. Adam Oates has been rejected two straight induction years and he retired with 1,420 points. Same with Doug Gilmour and his 1,414 points.

6. His 555 career regular season goals are impressive, but not good enough. Dino Ciccarelli has 608 and he has been rebuffed and Dave Andreychuk (640) won't get in when he's first-time eligible in 2009.

5. Has averaged less than a point per game in the playoffs in his career.

4. Has never been a first-team all-star. (He has been a second-teamer twice.)

3. Has never won an individual award.

2. Has never won a Stanley Cup - or even made it to the final.

1. Has rarely played at a level where he's considered among the top few players at his position. He has been loyal, durable, his production has been remarkably consistent, but he hasn't crossed the line between being a very, very good player and a truly exceptional player.

Hmmm ... I don't know about that. I hate the Leafs as much as the next Sens fan but there's no way Sundin isn't inducted into the hockey hall of fame once his career is over. I blame Leafs management more than I would ever blame Mats. It's not his fault that their incompetent and couldn't give him a supporting cast to play with.

Not great? He's still got 3-4 NHL seasons in him and he's 30th in the all-time scoring list with PPG average.

Quote:
8. He never posted a 50-goal season and had just one 100-point season. Pavel Bure had two 60-goal seasons and two more with 58 and 59 and he's an outsider.
So why the hell are guys like Ron Francis, Dick Duff, Valeri Kharlamov, Clark Gillies, Bernie Federko, Denis Savard, Roy Conacher, and Bob Gainey in the HOF if 50-goal seasons mean so much to a Hall of Famer.

Quote:
7. His 1,321 career regular season points are impressive, but not good enough. Adam Oates has been rejected two straight induction years and he retired with 1,420 points. Same with Doug Gilmour and his 1,414 points.
Adam Oates retired 4 years ago. You can't expect a barely-above-average player like him to be inducted into the HOF so quickly. Dougie, as much as I love that guy, 1414 in 1474 won't probably do it to get in the HOF.

Quote:
6. His 555 career regular season goals are impressive, but not good enough. Dino Ciccarelli has 608 and he has been rebuffed and Dave Andreychuk (640) won't get in when he's first-time eligible in 2009.
Maybe it's because Dino only has 1200 in 1232, and Dave has 1336 in 1639 and retired 2 years ago?

Quote:
5. Has averaged less than a point per game in the playoffs in his career.
Since when do playoff stats get you into the HOF?

Quote:
4. Has never been a first-team all-star. (He has been a second-teamer twice.)
I could guarantee there are a handful of players in the HOF with the same situation but I'm a little tired from explaining reason #8.

Quote:
3. Has never won an individual award.
That's funny because, even though it has nothing to do with points, he won the Messier Leadership Award about 3 months ago. And how about first European to be drafted 1st overall?

Quote:
2. Has never won a Stanley Cup - or even made it to the final.
Sure, i'll give you that one. But again, I guarantee there are a handful of Hall of Famers who have never won a Stanley Cup.

Quote:
1. Has rarely played at a level where he's considered among the top few players at his position. He has been loyal, durable, his production has been remarkably consistent, but he hasn't crossed the line between being a very, very good player and a truly exceptional player.
"Truly exceptional" is a big term a really big term. And that's a pretty big jump from very, very, good to truly exceptional. There are only 4 people in that category. Gretzky, Gordie, Messier, Mario.

Adam Oates had more talent in his left nut than Sundin has in his entire body.

Homers...

Oates stats in both the regular season and the playoffs speak for themselves and he was a wizard with the puck, second to only Gretzky in the late 80's early 90's.

I have never in my life been accussed of being a Leaf homer...

Oates is one of the best set up men in the history of the game, and an argument can be made he is better than Mats.....just not tthat much of a difference IMO.

ummm, why would he go to Vancouver then? Canucks right now are a lottery team, with Sundin they become merely just a playoff team, far from being a cup contender.

My guess is......Red wings

Oates was an amazing passer with excellent vision but it ends there, the guy was just average at everything else. Mats on the other hand might not be as good of a passer or have excellent vision like Oates but he does excel at every aspect of the game.

So, looks like McCabe is off to sunny Miami. 'Bout time .... Fletcher's done a decent job so far trying to prevent that sinking ship called the Maple Leafs from hitting the bottom of the ocean.

Is that Van Ryn guy good? Cuz Fletcher gave up McCabe and a draft pick for him so he'd better be better than McCabe

I don't think he's that good gurkang. I think it's a case of trying to dump one of the shittiest contracts in the league as the team is rebuilding. Think Jalen Rose with the raps a few years ago.
