Ilya Kovalchuk Signs with the Devils

Quote:
Prized unrestricted free-agent winger Ilya Kovalchuk(notes) is returning to the New jersey Devils, the team announced on its official Twitter feed Monday morning:

HE'S BACK: Ilya Kovalchuk signs with the Devils. Press conference scheduled for Tuesday at the Rock

Kovalchuk's mother tells Pavel Lysenkov of Sovetsky Sport that Kovalchuk's deal with New jersey is for 17 years. The deal is in excess of $100 million for 17 years, I am hearing out of Russia. This is unconfirmed by the Devils or Kovalchuk's camp.

(UPDATE: Also, the numbers I am hearing on the contract: Kovalchuk $102 million over 17 years; $10 million per year for the first eight years and $7.5 million for the next two.)
Wow a deal for 17 years! that means its gonna be over when hes 44. what do you guys think of this?

It's simple.

He signs for all those years and he stays on their books once he's done.... its basically a bullshit way around the CBA and the cap, they will give him his 10 million a year but spread it out so that it's paid over a longer period of time.

Agents and players will kill pro sports.

So its kinda like Chris Prongers contract? Where the older the player gets, the less money they make?

But hey. At that age they prolly won't be playing anyway but they'll still be making money xD

see that's what i don't understand. How can they still make money once they retire? Once you retire you terminate your contract, no?

How can someone sign a contract for more years than they will realistically play? It doesn't make sense.

They really need to limit the number of years in the next cba.

what do you mean? How can he still get paid once he retires if he's no longer playing hockey? I mean hockey players get paid for playing hockey right?

I don't think that's what SJ means, atleast that's not what I meant. I meant that even when he is done, when he has no more game, when there are younger better players then him, he will still be making money sitting at the end of the bench xD

no. pretty sure that's wrong and it won't end up happening. There is no way a team would keep a guy on the roster that couldn't play anymore. Any roster spot is too valuable. Look it REALLY doesn't make any sense... as in it's illogical. Without trying to dissect it and read between the lines, just look at it plain and simple. How can you sign a player to a contract when you know he won't be able to play out the contract?

Maybe SJ can explain it better.

You get paid even if you do retire i think. And the contracts are very heavily frontloaded.

DVS is right.

Basically they will let him linger a few years then he'll get a buy out.

Look to me it just seems like it's bullshit. I don't know why any league would allow it. It seems crooked and totally dishonest. and something that sets a bad precedent.

Yep.

It is.

They have pounded out the numbers and he is milking every red penny he can outta the Devils. But hey, they signed it. Fun thing is they now have a great Regular season player that disappears in the playoffs.

YAY

How does a league allow a 17yr deal? Seriously, their CBA deal from 6yrs ago is a joke. He'll be 10yrs past his prime when this expires. Stupid.
