Just out of curiosity... why were so many people rooting AGAINST the Habs?

Still haven't figured that one out....

Stupid Boston.... PHI was probably the worst matchup for MTL out of all the playoff teams.... credit to them... they played some great D.

When you score 7 goals in 5 games you ain't going nowhere.. no matter how hot your goalie is.

Toronto Maple Leafs / Montreal Canadiens

Hatfields / McCoys

Does that help?

Not really.... I'm a Habs fan through & through... but if the Leafs were on a historic run and had a chance to go to the cup finals I'd be rooting for them all the way.

Just seems wrong to think that people would rather see CHI or PHI win it than a Canadian team.

To each his/her own though. Moot point now.

maybe this..... cheering for mtl for me is like trying to force two magnets together on the same polarity. no matter how hard you try, it just cannot happen.

i have more, if you like.

do Sox fans root for the Yankees in the playoffs? I know rivalries are not as intense as they used to, but lets keep some tradition

the funny thing to me is that for habs fans, their rivalry is really with boston, not toronto. it has been so many decades since the leafs mattered to the habs that it's nothing but an old rivalry clung to by fans of a team that are trying to remember victories from half a century ago so they don't have to admit how awful the team is now.

there are two reasons that habs fans don't cheer for toronto:

1. we represent english canada. they care about that (for the most part we don't, at least not in a fiercely political way). this is a larger cultural issue spilling into sports, and one that doesn't go tho other way, considering that torontonians visit montreal in huge numbers, and generally are positive about the city.

2. more importantly, there is nothing to cheer for. we stink. we've stunk for ages. a few playoff forays with aging teams are not something anybody could care about for more than that season. why would a habs fan ever care about another canadian team that isn't even sniffing the playoffs?

so we tend to like the city of montreal, we haven't played much meaningful hockey against them in decades, and they don't really care about us one way or another except for a cultural history that goes back to the founding of the country and is only a hot issue for quebecers, and somehow that means we can't root for them. i don't get it.

Exactamundo.

For me.. as a Habs fan growing up there were 3 teams that I hated with a passion....

1) Boston

2) Quebec City

3) Hartford (now Carolina)

And even so.... I would have still rooted for Les Nordiques if they had a chance to win it all (since they're Canadian).

All that being said, I don't know how how you can watch the Bell Centre crowd on T.V. and NOT be caught up in the emotion.

Of course!

I want BOTH the Jets and the Nordiques back in the league.

And another team in southwestern ontario would be great too.

I don't care about either of these teams, but overtime always makes me jittery.
