Default New Rule in LPGA: Players Must Speak English

As a result of a new rule, players in the LPGA must know how to speak English. Here is an ESPN article on it:

Quote:
The LPGA will require its member golfers to learn and speak English and will suspend their membership if they don't comply.

The new requirement, first reported by Golfweek on its Web site, was communicated to the tour's growing South Korean membership in a mandatory meeting at the Safeway Classic in Portland, Ore., on Aug. 20. Connie Wilson, the LPGA's vice president of communications, confirmed the new policy to ESPN.com.

"Why now? Athletes now have more responsibilities and we want to help their professional development," deputy commissioner Libba Galloway told The Associated Press. "There are more fans, more media and more sponsors. We want to help our athletes as best we can succeed off the golf course as well as on it."

Players were told by LPGA commissioner Carolyn Bivens that by the end of 2009, all players who have been on the tour for two years must pass an oral evaluation of their English skills or face a membership suspension. A written explanation of the policy was not given to players, according to the report.

In my opinion, this is a really stupid addition, and is only being put into place for marketability reasons. Thoughts?

Incredible...have they even heard of translators?

They will rescind this in a couple months.

This comming from the same sport that up until recently still had courses that would not allow Blacks on it.

Anyone know what course it was in the states that was hosting the US Opennd it was all over the news because Tiger was going to play on the course?

Looks its a good idea they are just framing it wrong.

With the influx of south asian players, now 1/3 of the tour, it is becomming harder and harder, for them to promote non english speaking players in the pro-ams, and sponsership programs , because they can not converse with the sponsers if the had said.

"The LPGA is launching a program to help players better their understanding of the english language, they will provide free classes and tutoring sessions for those who need it, to better the relationship with the great sponsers who keep the tour flourishing"

anyone have a problem with that?

yeah. i do.

Why force someone to learn a language when they don't need it to play a game?
To make more money? who cares. Sports in general are about performing to the best of one's abilities. not about sponsors. and after all, i'm sure they won't have a hard time getting korean sponsors if they speak korean.

When i drive on the highway and see the tiger woods billboard, he's not saying anything in english to me.

Like i understand offering english tutorials for those that want them, but don't fucking force someone to learn it when it's not needed to play the sport.

also, translators will be out of work. think of the translators!

i agree 100% with fancylad. sponsors in golf is what you wear and what clubs you use, it's not about giving speeches in english. besides, if golf is booming in asia are the english speaking golfers going to accommodate the market there by learning korean? lpga should be capitalizing on their market expanding internationally, not segregating itself to accommodate north americans exclusively.

Exhibit A.

Raptors Forum spends 10,000 to sponsor an LPGA event. With that deal the most important thing is the Pro-Am, as well RF is not a golfing company they are sponsoring an individual event, without high TV numbers. Funk, Fancy,Benzo get to golf with a golf pro. During the round they can't converse with her, talk to her, and she can't talk to you.

RF is not a sponsor next year.

Exhibit B

LPGA gains international grounds, starts touring in asia, europe, and africa from the emergence of home bred golf superstars. next season the tours stop because their golf superstars were kicked off tour for not being able to speak english.

how is it silly? do you really think you'll receive international sponsorships if you're removing their product from the tour?

giving an ultimatum is weak. what if the person is a slow learner? can't grasp the pronunciation? shit, what if the person is deaf, dumb?

They have already stated that a suspension is unlikley, and will only be in cases where the person is "unwilling" to learn.
