NBL thread

National Basketball League of Canada: The NBL-Canada is reported to have seven different ownership groups in the province of Ontario interested in teams for next season. These include Hamilton, Ottawa, Windsor, and two groups each in Kitchener and Mississauga. The league's Summerside Storm (Prince Edward Island) hopes to return to the city next season, but has yet to sign a lease. Team ownership was said to be considering Charlottetown (Prince Edward Island) as a possible back-up location if a deal in Summerside falls through. The league's Quebec Kebs franchise has apparently lost its lease at the University of Laval and is apparently looking to move or sell the team. Possible locations mentioned for the team are Montreal and Sherbrooke in Quebec or Kingston (Ontario).

I like the idea of expansion to Ottawa, moving Oshawa to Mississauga, 8 teams, 4 team playoff.

fancylad 04-09-2012 03:04 PM

Given the sizes of the venues being used, it makes sense to have teams in all of those places. As i said in that other thread, Montreal makes the most sense though. There seems to be plenty ofbasketball fans there given what went down with the raptors exhibition game. Ottawa seems logical too.

Seems like the first season was a success, no?

bjjs 04-13-2012 02:42 PM

First season was a huge success because it was professional bball, very good value ($20tickets), and responsible ownership groups focusing on the long-term.

I could take my 2 year old son with me to a game as a last minute decision because it only cost $40.

Montreal is looking like a strong possibility...

Quebec Kebs (Quebec City) moving - either Montreal, Sherbrooke, or even Kingston with apparently the city of Kingston considering buying the team.

Quote:

“The teams have to be strong financially or they won’t get in,” London Lightning owner Vito Frijia said. “The reason most minor league basketball teams fail in the United States is because they are underfunded and when they have any types of problems they can’t deal with it . . . In our league, I don’t want to hear about players not getting paid or hotels not getting paid. That’s not what the NBL is all about.”

Detroit Group submitted application for a team in Windsor. Nobody in Windsor has any idea who they are.

The commish had to step down due to family emergency. League looking for a replacement. Not a big deal since the owners are very active within the league.

I want NBL in kingston! I saw the globe trotters at the arena downtown, basketball could work there, seats like 5 er 8k er somethin, arena is like 2 years new.

but it's pretty much rural ontario down here, in the sense that if it doesn't involve ice, it's not a sport. I'd be the only one going if the team wasn't anygood.

That must be why the looked into buying them, help pay for that new arena. I recall Kingston having a solid high school bball program, I'm sure you're not the only one.

there are lots of unis and colleges here, maybe people would show up.....If the team was consistently good they could sell out...the fronts are terrible and they do well in attendance I think

Loved the NBL this year, went to every single Rainman game... Gave me something to do after being out in Toronto and having to come back here...

NBL in Kitchener to discuss proposal with the Mayor – no relevant details – like who the potential ownership group is.

Summerside fans don’t want the team to move to Charlottetown…isn’t lt like a 20 minute drive to go from one side of PEI to the other….

I would go to games in St. Catharines.

I would travel to Mississauga to watch some games. Although I don't envision anything at the Hershey Centre to create large attendance

It's worth the money to atleast give it a few chances if you're a bball fan. In terms of price - the league is trying to make it as affordable as taking your family to the movies. My dad is a big college fan - he was shocked by the quality of bball.

Deadline for expansion is two weeks away

St. Catherines, Mississauga, Kitchener, Windsor, Kingston and Ottawa have groups actively pursuing membership.

Hamilton, & Sydney, NS out.

Quebec City will be moved to another city within Quebec. The leauge doesn't want a team which gets little support from the city.

Rainmen protected list - Chiggmo - I'm surprised with Hugee instead of Wright or even Crooshank. I didn't like HUGEe - he's a whiner.

Ya the five (other than Hugee) are perfect choices. I also agree on giving it to Wright over Hugee, but what can ya do. Hes not a bad player at least, but he does whine a lot, he's also kind of a dick. All the Rainmen players LOVE signing the autographs after ever game, they sit there and talk and carry on with anyone and everyone. But Hugee doesn't speak, he just signs whatever and looks grump.

Crook better be back, he's awesome.

Mill Rats' Diarra stranded in Mali. Diara and Ocitti would have been a deadly twin-tower combo in the NBL if that team had unselfish guards who understood how to get their bigs going.

?We?re not content with our first year?: Lightning GM | Metro

It will be interesting to see how some of the franchises do after an enthusiastic first year. The true test will be in the third, fourth season imo. For London the true test will be when Richardson finds work elsewhere, his passion was contagious.

Summerside protected list.

Really impressed with the enthusiasm and the publicity that Summerside gets. They are the third team along with London & Halifax that has regular media attention within their home town.
