National Anthems in Sports

I get amused by some national anthem renditions in sports. Some can be terrible, some can be really akward and embarassing, some done really tastelessly... and occasionally some can be really good.

post some:

the infamous carl lewis verison:

the canadian hockey one:

here's a lame Christina Aguilera version:

here's a pretty good one from edmonton:

here's a classic from Chicago stadium that's pretty kick ass.

ha! that stackhouse version was awesome. I haden't seen it before and was expecting him to fuck it up at some point, but dude was good!

i totally forgot about the maurice cheeks version too. that one's great!

Stack's is good because he doesn't try and oversing it and go for the big money notes that he clearly doesn't have the range to hit.

The Marvin Gaye version is a classic.

The Edmonton one gives me chills every time I watch it.

Edit: was there a crisis or something going on at the same time that one in Chicago was filmed? Americans always like to amp up the patriotism when something involving America is going on in the world.

Edit 2: Nevermind, saw Saudi Arabia.

Two of the most famous renditions of the star spangled banner of all time.

The russian anthem gets me pumped

I can't access the videos here at work, and I'm not sure if you guys included it, but I remember one from years ago (I think it was like 1995 or something like that) at a CFL game between Las Vegas and Edmonton (or Hamilton), the guy singing "Oh Canada" made it sound like "Oh Christmas Tree"

here it is Mango, in Vegas

Here is one. This is from the game I went to this season. It is against the Knicks on April 5th 2009. This was really cool. Enjoy!

Stackhouse's was awesome. I Dont like Anthems but if I can see a player sing it, its more than worth it.

fancylad 04-15-2009 08:54 AM

i heard about that one Gurk, but i never saw it. Too bad the video isn't the best quality because it would have been very interesting to hear it better. good find.

i remember the roseanne one from when i was younger. just plain weird.

I LOVE anthems at international soccer tournaments myself.

i was at an argo's game last season and one of the players gave a great performance. this huge OL just belted it out nicely. it was funny because when he was finnished he ran over to the huddle and the rest of his teammates all hugged him and laughed - you could tell they were ll shocked at how good he was.
i love seeing the players sing.

I was actually at that game too, I think it might have been Adriano Belli. Either way I remember the guy who sang it also auditioned on Canadian Idol.

Yea It was sick in person. I tried looking for a better quality video but I couldn't find any. Hell this was the only one that was on youtube

Carl Lewis FTW.

if a performer has to tell the crowd during the song that he'll "get it right on this last note", then you know theres a problem.:mischief:
