MLSE Successful As Business, But Teams Struggle To Compete

There's no disputing Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment is one hugely successful ownership conglomerate. Look at the books: an estimated $500-million in annual revenue. But on the ice, court and field, it's a different story. Much different. Its teams haven't won a championship in the last 61 combined seasons. Even making the playoffs is becoming a dream for the fans who fill the seats.

MLSE Successful As Business, But Teams Struggle To Compete

Looks like there is a real revolt in TFC land when i read what is going on with the RPB and u sector groups. ML$E is the enemy in their eyes and there's a lot of (mostly empty) threats going around.

As for where i stand, it's good that ML$E are willing to spend on their teams up to an un-punishable level. That's a good stage. Now spend that money wisely you gimps.

Also something about how they own all the teams minus the Jays just pisses me off though.

“When the team is not winning I hurt on the business side and I hurt as a fan,” Peddie says. “I don’t like sitting through a game when we’re getting blown out, I don’t like sitting through games in April that mean nothing. It does help, however, to count all that money. It's an interesting dynamic, what it does to my heart. It's like, I get all sad but then I'm like, "Yes!" and I forget about the fact we suck ass. One of the things I love to do is, after getting my tips freshly frosted, take off all my clothes and jump into a pile of gate receipts and chicken wing bones."

MLSE execs feel the pain, too, fans
It is maddening.

For the frustrated masses who love the Toronto Maple Leafs, arguably the largest single fan group in this country, and the smaller loyal bands which live and die with the Toronto Raptors and Toronto FC, there is no healthy, natural outlet.

Sure it’s a straightforward consumer relationship. You buy your ticket and you take your chances. Sure it’s an entertainment business – and no one goes gunning for the studio head when they hate what they just saw at the local multiplex.

MLSE: Losing at all costs
The Toronto Maple Leafs passed on their chance to be the New York Yankees of hockey. They could have crushed NHL opponents with their financial might before the 2004-05 lockout, paying whatever it took to attract the best players on the planet.

They did spend: From 1998-99 through 2003-04, the Leafs jacked payroll to $61.8-million from $34-million and were rewarded with 41 home playoff dates, trailing only the Colorado Avalanche and New Jersey Devils in that department. During that same period, however, their payroll never ranked higher than fifth overall, and they failed to reach the Stanley Cup finals even as the Avalanche and Devils brought the Cup home.
