Jays apparently avoided arbitration today and inked Rios to a 1 year 4+ million dollar deal.

That's good news, but i would have liked more than just 1 year.

What type of annual moola do you think Rios would of gotten if it went to an arbitrator? I'm assuming he would of gotten alot more knowing that he's going to get a large long term raise after this season.

I'll say right now he'll get about 8-10 million easy.

Some good news from the Blue Jays camp. BJ's feeling good and thinks that he'll be ready for opening day.

I'm actually embarrassed for Zaun. As if this story is even believable.

Zaun added to MLB.com that he believed that Grimsley scribbled dealer Kirk Radomski's name on the check and used it to buy steroids.

"You're talking about one check of thousands that I've written over the last seven years," Zaun told MLB.com said on Friday. "I'm supposed to recall why and when and to whom and where? That was nearly impossible for me to figure out, but when I went through the document and I looked at it, I could tell right away that the only parts of the check that were mine were my signature and possibly the $500 in the box. "

The Mitchell Report, released in December, featured a scanned image of the check, which Radomski said was used to obtain Deca-Durabolin and Winstrol. The check has Zaun's signature, and Radomski said the drugs were delivered to the clubhouse of the Kansas City Royals, where Zaun played in 2000 and 2001.

Radomski said that he believed Zaun was referred to him by former pitcher Jason Grimsley, who purchased more than $35,000 worth of steroids and human growth hormone from Radomski between 2001 and 2005, according to the Report.

"I knew right away there was something wrong," added Zaun. "I wanted to at least offer up an explanation for how my name ends up in that report. Maybe people come away from this and think there's a possibility that this could've happened, because that's the way I remember it happening."

The Mitchell Report also has other copies of checks submitted to Radomski by Grimsley. According to MLB.com, some of the writing on the check bearing Zaun's signature resembles writing on checks written by the former pitcher.

Zaun said he would've shredded his personal copy of the check.

"I would gladly produce the check if I knew where it was," Zaun told MLB.com. "The photocopy in the Mitchell Report is clear enough. I knew right away I hadn't finished writing that check when I saw it."

When asked by MLB.com why he'd write a check without making it out specifically to Grimsley, Zaun said he's done that before "dozens of times."

"I can say, with 100 percent certainty, that the cheque was not to buy performance-enhancing drugs," Zaun said. "It's obvious to me what parts of the cheque are my writing."

Can't understand why only a 1 year deal for Rios.Secondly who cares about Zaun if he indeed took steroids you would never know it. No strength in those arms, aguebly the worst defencive catcher when talking about his arm strength and ability to throw down to second base.

Zaun is a grit player and he's cheap. Catcher's around the league are poor.

Rios got a one year deal because he was arbitration bound. This way you avoid any messy situation, keep him cheaply and lastly by some time for long term negotiations. And again, I can definitively say, that Rios enters and leaves the Jays long term plans on a monthly basis. Trust me if any one was willing to part with front of the end pitcher for him, the Jays would've dealt him long ago.

Look who's back fellas ... a blast from the past. Shannon Stewart signed a one year minor league contract with the Jays and an invitation to training camp. Looks as his numbers from last season and he looks like he can still play too.

hey, i just realizes the Shannon Stewart signing and i haven't checked this thread for a while. that's really awesome news i think. Not sure what kind of playing time he'll get, but i suppose it wouldn't be so bad to go for that platooning left field thing the jays had with reed and Cat.

Hoops, you seem in the know.., does Do you think Stewart would offer more than Reed?

Jays look like they have a good team this year, but I hate baseball's divisional system... sitting behind NY and Boston, we could have the 3rd best team in the AL and still not make the playoffs.

Baseball needs a damn salary cap.

Damn fancy, I didn't see this till now, sorry about that... I think it all depends on Reed and whether he can bounce back to 2006 form. Stewart, IMO is a much better hitter. Reed on the other hand is the better fielder. I'd take Stewart and shave that 2 million plus Reed earns into grabbing another reliever.

Baseball DOES need a salary cap, just not a soft cap though. It needs a hard cap, like the NFL or the NHL

Bad news, gents, Janssen is done for the season

Quote:
The Blue Jays relief pitcher has a torn labrum in his right shoulder and will be out for the entire 2008 season.

"Janssen is out for the year," Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi told reporters Wednesday morning. "He has a torn labarum in his right shoulder and we won't have him this year. Pretty straight forward."

So did anyone see the game yesterday... fucking Jays handle pressure about as well as Dirk in the playoffs, talk about a lot of runners stranded. I actually think our lineup is better than the Yankees this year and Detroit is overrated(good lineup but average pitching, they lost to Kansas City twice already) they just need to stop playing like little girls and they could finally get the wildcard.

Thanks for the chuckle MVP.

Anyhoo, I missed it but I did read that we stranded too many runners. Anyhow, I have a feeling this team will disappoint me again this season, but no need to worry yet. Still 161 games to go.
