What a shocker...

TORONTO - The long anticipated breakup between A.J. Burnett and the Toronto Blue Jays finally happened Tuesday, with both sides insisting the split isn't necessarily a permanent one.

Darek Braunecker, agent for the flame-throwing right-hander, informed the club of his client's intention to opt out of the remaining two years and US$24 million on his contract, setting the stage for Burnett to become a free agent.

Burnett was great last year, but before that he was either awful or injured.

The Jays will have to sign a starting pitcher... So maybe this is a blessing in disguise. Maybe they could sign Dempster for the same money. He's been great since the Cubs moved him back to a starting role. Sure, it was only one year, but I'd rather roll the dice with Dempster than Burnett.

I say you fill the hole from within. Casey Jannsen is a damn good pitcher and better than burnett imo

That's why there needs to a salary cap in baseball.

In the end, I think Burnett ends up with the Mets. Sabathia will be a Dodger. As for Manny, I think he'll stay on the West coast - either with the Angels or Dodgers.

The Jays should try and see if they could pry Jake Peavy away from the Pads.

Apparently they want 4 major league ready prospects. That's an insane amount, but he is imo, the second best pitcher in the league next to Lincecum.

Yup. I could see CC in somewhere crazy though, like Baltimore. Manny, I think is done with the Dodgers as the Dodgers aren't willing to shell out a 5 yr deal at 20 plus. I see him in NY, just to say a big fuck you to Boston.

I have no confidence in JP .... knowing him he's going to try and convince Doyle Alexander to come out of retirement to pitch for the Jays next season.

This team goes nowhere as long as JP is at the helm.

I think JP, in all his infinite wisdom, is going to go the cheap route. He tried to get Jacobs from Florida for nothing, instead Jacobs ends up in KC.

He is right when he says they're still rich in pitching b/c they are. They need another vet in that line up and that's about it.

I'd target Furcal for SS (looked good when healthy), see if Joe Crede is interested in playing DH or try to get Nick Swisher on the cheap, talk to Texas if we can swap some prospects, hell even Nelson Cruz at 30 still has some pop and they need pitching, seems like a match made in heaven, or try to acquire Willy Tavares from Colorado so we have an actual lead off hitter.

I don't know about CC in Baltimore, C, just because he's made overtures about how he wants to play in California (grew up in Oakland).
ANother team in the wildcard for Manny - the Mets. Another Latin superstar to go with Delgado, Reyes, Santana...

As for the Jays, I think with Burnett leaving, they're gonna have to go out overspend for a #2/even #3. It's gonna be hard though. Right now, starting roation is really thin. We have a boatload of OF prospects - a glut in the OF.

I don't know about Tavares. He's like Juan Pierre. His OBP is awful for a leadoff hitter.

I like the idea of Furcal though. He's a linchpin kind of player.

Swisher isn't going anywhere. Kenny Williams loves that guy. Crede perhaps. When he's healthy, he can be productive. But that's a big IF.

I wouldn't mind going after Giambi. He still has pop and a nice OBP.

What about Dennis Lamp and Jim Clancy?

Surely they must be in the plans too.

Hoops, if Baltimore is willing to throw cash around as has been reported then I can see them being a player. And hell who knows?

As for Swisher. I read some reports today that said he was being shopped around. If that's the case I jump on that. Seeing him play in a homer friendly park like the Rogers Centre would be real nice.

Another name that just came up: Homer Bailey. If he has truly fallen out of favour, there's a reclamation project worth scooping up. The kid has stuff but never had the proper coaching. Reminds me of Doc, when Doc was young and out of control.

Baltimore is always throwing around cash. The thing about Burnett and the Orioles is that Brunett doesn't like to be "the man". He likes to get paid like it, but shies away from the limelight. If he goes to the Orioles, he'll be the ace. He'd be better off going somewhere where's he'd be the #2.

If he goes, what about Brad Penny? That dude is a horse.

Hoops I think Penny would be a steal. He's a very smart pitcher and it seems we've always been really interested in him. He does what Burnett does at the fraction of the cost. It would be nice to grab Lowe as well.

C, I think Lowe is going to the East Coast - either the Yankees or back to the BoSox.

Another pitcher I would look at but had a bit of arm trouble at the end of the season is Ben Sheets. Sheets and Penny and this team would be stacked. Halladay, Sheets, Penny, Litsch and McGowan/Marcum.

It would allow the team to deal any surplus pitching (+ Overbay) for a masher.

Hoops agree on Sheets. If he doesn't want to command a massive salary, which he will, then he's AJ with more talent and a better repetoire. And I'd put Purcey instead of Marcum in there. Purcey at the end of the year was looking solid and the way he would toy with the Rays in some games shows how talented he is. In September he only got killed by that BoSox line up which had so much playoff experience already. Purcey was over his head.

If the Overbay to Seattle rumors are true then I'm curious as to what we want to receive. I remember reading Jarod Washburn, but he's finished as a starter in this league.

Washburn? Forget that. One guy I would love is JJ Putz. I think the M's are gonna use Brandon Morrow as their closer, and if that's the case, Putz would be GREAT in our bullpen. You can never have enough pitching. But I don't think that's happening.

One big rumour I heard was Halladay, Overbay and Rolen to Milwaukee for Prince Fielder and Alcides Escobar - some people would be mixed on this, but fuck it, we're not competing on a level with Tampa or even Boston - time to re-stock this team. Roy, at 32, who knows how much longer he can pitch at a high level?

You put Prince into this lineup with Snider, Lind, Rios and Wells, and it's lights fuckin out. Even Prince and Snider itself is scary. We'd be able to control Prince for another 3 years - or give him a fat contract now. Escobar is a great SS prospect - and heaven knows, we need an everyday SS to play with Inglett.

That would be a massive, and I mean massive trade. Prince is great but Escobar is a talent and I'd be extremely giddy if they picked him up.

I could see this trade going through if Sheets and CC leave as it gives them, Halladay who would be lights out in the NL.

I've read that Lind is being shopped around which shocks me to be honest but he could fetch a few things. Putz would be lights out if we decide to deal BJ and I'd be surprised if BJ is a Jay in April. I think with the bullpen depth they don't need him anymore and a team like Tampa (even though Balfour is getting there) or the NY Mets could use him, espescially the Mets. Also, wonder what it would take to get Bedard here? There's a beauty of an option who's not happy in Seattle at all.

Lind being shopped? If that were the case, they better get someone damn good in return. I can see Lind challenging for several battle titles over his career with some decent pop- 20 to 25 HR max.

Bedard would be amazing, C, but I don't see the Mariners giving up on him so soon.

I like the idea of BJ to the Mets. It would be a perfect fit - they wouldn't have to shell out uber dollars to K-Rod, and they'd have him only for another 2 season (they balked at giving K-Rod more than a 3 year contact)
